Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Dolomites - a few questions re ski pass, ski hire, instructor

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Can’t wait to travel to Dolomites for the first time on 14 December for two weeks! Starting a new thread as didn’t get a response in the general Dolomites one.
We will stay in Arabba the first week and Corvara the second week. Would appreciate help on the following:
1) The first week there is a ski pass offer with one day free.. should l buy ski passes separately for the first and second week ? ( it is two of us first week- me and my younger son with husband and older son joining the second week) Both my kids normally qualify for disability discount too ( neurodiverse) but not from reading the ski pass page seems like it is less than a junior discount anyway
2) Ski equipment, is there a way to rent in Arabba and return in Corvara or should l rent separately for both weeks?
3) Any recommendations for snowboarding instructors or school for kids in Corvara?

Not long now!! snowHead snowHead

1. The price calculator on Dolomiti Superski will tell you. It usually gets cheaper and cheaper per day the longer duration pass you buy, until you hit the cost of an entire season pass at around 21 days in peak season. So basically you need to buy your passes for the two weeks, the others for the days they need. That's assuming you plan to ski every day you're out there. How are you transferring to Corvara? Will you be skiing that day?

6-day pass from 14/12 €392
6-day pass from 21/12 €414
13-day pass from 14/12 €679, so quite a saving!

The only other thing to note is that Dolomiti Superski offer 5% discount for online pre-purchase (must be purchased before midnight (Central European Time) Friday for a pass starting on Sunday). Whether you want to pull that trigger for that discount is up to you.

2. Ski hire usually gets cheaper per day the longer the rental too. The issue you will have is finding a shop that has an affiliate in the other resort where you can return your skis. My guess is that there won't be, so you'll probably have to do two rentals, they likely would want sharpening and wax after a week anyway. It might be worth emailing places in Arabba that might be willing to arrange pick-up from Corvara for a 2 week rental and do a service the night before you transfer. Never tried this before, but other snowHeads may have some ideas.

3. Sorry, can't help there.

there is one main ski & snowboard school in Corvara so there's not much choice unless you find a freelancer. We've only ever had private lessons with instructors that have varied from ok to fantastic. . The same school also has offices in Colfosco and la Villa but only seem to do snowboard private lessons so it depends what you want.

However, it's only a 20-30 minute ski over to la Villa which has at least one other school so if you don't receive any Corvara recommendations don't rule that out. When we stay in Corvara I have lessons in la Villa as that's where my preferred instructor is based. I've even had lessons starting at 8:30 and used a conveniently timed bus from Corvara which gets you there with time for a pre ski cappuccino.

As @richb67 says, The Corvara ski school is the only ski school in Corvara and they do private snowboard lessons but don't do any snowboard group lessons. My son had some snowboard lessons with them and enjoyed it and they have quite a few snowboard instructors on the team.

But, just one short bubble ride away is Colfosco where the Corvara private lessons will head to after a bit anyway and there the ski school does do group snowboard lessons. That is subject to minimum of 5 participants though and I suspect they maybe won't get that mid December. Maybe get in touch with them and see what they say. Their website is here: https://www.scuolascicolfosco.it/en/

@olderscot, good spot as they're owned by the same people I assumed the same services but obviously not!

1. The prices I quoted before were for adult Dolomiti Superski passes and they likely incuded the 5% online purchase discount.

2. Another thought on this...2 weeks rentals depending on price might equal or come close to the cost of buying some skis, also depends on which airline and cost of ski carriage. Some great deals on last years models on French online sellers Glisshop and Ekosport if you have some idea of what you would want. You would need a set with bindings and a bag to carry them in too. Assuming you already have your own boots, of course.

@Bella2015,
Two or three years ago we met our daughter and her husband in Arabba. They were coming long haul so hired from the place below the cable car, sorry can’t remember their name. Anyhow on the last day she fell down some stairs, split her head, ended up shovelled off the the hill and taken to Brunico in an ambulance. Hubby went with her. Being stuck with four sets of skis and poles between us, wife and I called the rental company. They couldn’t have been more helpful. Told us to drop them at the gate of the nearest lift and they would collect them.
My advice would be to just front up and say that you’d ideally like a fortnights hire, but that would involve collection from Corvara. They can only say no.

Hi all - thank you so much for recommendations and great tips as always. Sorry for delayed response, very busy few days so only catching up now.. we will have a car to travel from Arabba to Corvara and intend to ski on the transfer day. Don’t have our own boots so probably not worth considering buying skis ( also flying Ryanair so cost of ski carriage will probably be high) , so rental it is for us… Will try to check with local shops if can return in Corvara or else maybe drive to Arabba on the last day

If you have a car just return the gear to Arabba at the end of your holiday?
Its only about twenty minutes or so by road.

Via the campolongo pass you are from Corvara in 20 min in Arabba! Depending on from where you fly out it can even be on the way (Treviso, Venice).

I can't give you advice on ski-passes because we are locals and use seasonal passes.

There is only 1 ski school in Corvara, they are good (have used them) also the 2 in La Villa are very good. The one thing you'll need to worry about is, is early season. Depending on the age of your children they might not be able to get a full group together. For skiing that's normally not a problem but probably is for snowboarding. Ask!
