 Poster: A snowHead

Looking at an appartment for the family for a Jan trip which appears reasonably spacious and has access to the gondola . Not familiar with the area , are there any drawbacks? Is there ski hire and supermarket reasonably close?

I stayed there a few years ago; it's rather quiet but quite a pleasant little village. There's a supermarket near the gondola end, where there is also a ski bus stop (which we took more often than the gondola). I think there's a rental shop there too, but we didn't use it. There are a couple of restaurants and a bar. There is a long red back to the village, but when we were there it was never open.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

drawbacks is a bus or gondola to/from the skis slopes and not a lot there!! Not sure about ski hire tbh, there is a small supermarket from memory.

The Tsaretta is a nice bar and does ok food. If there is enough snow you can ski back. The busses are pretty reliable, work to a timetable and are free. The downside of the bubble up is that it can be pretty full by the time it gets to Les Allues, though in January should be ok. I like Les Allues, and a lot of ski workers tend to be based there. It should be cheaper than further up the valley and the people are nicer.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

There was a ski hire shop next to the supermarket when I was last there. Also worth thinking about hiring a ski locker at the Chaudanne (Meribel) to save lugging skis if your Les Allues accommodation is a schlep from the bus stop and the bubble, particularly if you have young children.

Have stayed in Les Allues many times. Supermarket is quite small and is very near the bus stop. Ski hire there too. A few local restaurants. Depends exactly where you are staying whether gondola or bus is the best way to get to skiing. You can only ski back to Les Allues when there has been a good dump of snow and I don't think it was possible at all last winter, certainly not while we were out there. Look at Google map and you should be able to see where you are staying and what is nearby.
The bubble from Brides only gets full in peak weeks so as long as you are going after the weekend of 3/4 Jan you should be OK. Last New Year we queued 90minutes in Brides to just get on!!! That is why we are going mid-Jan this year.

Thanks again we're going 10-17 Jan so it should work out fine with the gondola or the bus.

It's quite a steep walk down to, or back up from the gondola.
With the bus, hop off in Meribel Village and ski from there unless heading to VT. Consider finishing your day in Village too, have a beer at the Lodge and catch the bus home.
Small superette, ski hire shop almost next door, Ekosport last year IIRC.
As said above, the Tsaretta is popular with the locals.

Les Allues is a great choice if you’re not bothered about being away from the main Meribel resort centre

I stayed in Nantgerel a couple of years back, did feel remote, and really needed the car, and that is up the hill from Les Allues.
If you are near the Gondola and not fussed about night life probably fine.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

All sounds good , we have a car and not too bothered about being in main resort .

For some, being a bit distant from the throbbing heart of Meribel could be a plus point!

@T Bar, Perhaps look at Mottaret, much better lift access, shops and car free for the family. More apartments than in LA (daughter lives in LA)
