Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski touring, avalanche in Südtirol, multiple fatalities

Hopefully this is not behind a paywall https://www.sueddeutsche.de/panorama/lawine-suedtirol-ortler-todesopfer-li.3333188 . Strangely for the 1st November there seems to have been an accident where ski touring parties have been caught in an avalanche with multiple fatalities. Odd there is enough snow to ski tour, even more so enough for a fatal avalanche. Location appears to be the slopes under the Vertainspitze to the east of Sulden not far from Passo Stelvio & the Ortler.

Der italienischen Nachrichtenagentur Ansa zufolge handelt es sich bei ihnen um zwei Männer und eine Frau im Alter zwischen etwa 30 und 50 Jahren. Sie seien als Tourengeher unterwegs gewesen.

They were touring.

Looks to me like there were 3 groups and at least one group was ski touring. (the other groups have been ice climbing, snowshoeing etc.). It doesn‘t say if they were all taking the same route. It‘s possible that one group (e.g. Ski tourers ) set off the avalanche that then hit the other groups.

I read this as ski touring but it could be climbing too (Leo suggests "Tourengehen" the Alpine way, i.e. climbing with skis and then skiing down, is "ski mountaineering". "Touren gehen" in summer is "fell-walking"), even so an unusual time of year for this type of accident.

I'm sure the Lawinenwarndienst Tirol and the police will publish a report this week or next with more of the known facts.

No skis involved - https://www.stol.it/artikel/chronik/drama-im-ortlergebiet-eines-der-schwersten-lawinenungluecke-seit-jahren three seperate ropes, one of three people and 2 of 2 people, climbing not ski mountaineering. Only one of the 2 person ropes survived. It seems odd that they were still climbing so late in the day.

Looks like it will be 5 Deceased. Shocked Shocked

Avalanches can happen anytime even with low risk..

After the death of at least three German mountaineers in an avalanche accident in South Tyrol, the search for two missing people has been resumed. However, the Italian mountain rescue service says it has no hope of finding the woman and man alive. Both also come from Germany. Three fatalities have already been brought down to the valley by helicopter.

According to the mountain rescue spokesman, there was no particularly high avalanche danger on Saturday.

Yes it looks like something got lost in the translation.
They were going up the Nordwand which is far too steep for skis.
