Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Austria Citys New Driving Laws

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
This is General Info if you happen to Visit Austrian Citys .

Anyone planning a holiday in Austria should familiarise themselves with the new traffic rules. Because wrong turns could soon become really expensive.

Up to 2200 euros fine: Drivers in Austria should be aware of this new rule

If you drive to Austria next year, you'd better check the route twice: From May 2026, Austria wants to monitor the entrances to some cities by camera. The new system is intended to prevent unauthorized persons from entering certain areas of the city. And that's one thing above all: expensive if you're not careful.

In the future, traffic cameras will record every license plate when entering and compare it with an authorization list. According to the Austrian Ministry of Transport, the data of the vehicle and owner are processed in compliance with the GDPR, i.e. in accordance with the European General Data Protection Regulation.

Use Waze, if you have a pass add it in , such as the DE Umweltplakette or your Austrian Vignette, if you haven't got it it will plan accordingly

Usual unhelpful scaremongering from stanton with no explanation of what "authorization list" means or is and article is no better. I assume another Austria resident can be more helpful.

@Dave of the Marmottes, I often see the text "Stanton & Stavely" when walking down the street - they are a brand of sewer cover.

From a quick chatgpt, it seems as though municipalities will be able to use automated camera systems, so it could lead to them banning certain vehicles in certain areas, like the congestion charge in London etc.

But as yet, nothing confirmed for any locations what will happen.

This is the first I've heard of it, so I don't think there's been much press coverage as yet. Probably because there's not much to say. If they can tie it in to the ASFINAG system, then presumably you can just get pinged for the fee when you enter a “zone”, the same way you do when you pass a toll booth.

There are already rules about through-traffic staying on the motorway rather than rat running through the towns, which I think probably affect more Germans on their way to Lake Garda than locals anyway. The info for that is limited to “through traffic stay on the autobahn” or similar on the motorway tickers, so they'll have to do better signage-wise, and then presumably they can do away with the police monitors as well.

So really for LEZs and Low Traffic (resident only) Zones then? And this is just law to enable ANPR? Rather than as the top post implies automatic fines for entering city limits.

I think that's probably what it is. Privacy laws are pretty tight in Austria, so they probably need some extra bureaucracy to enable their extra bureaucracy rolling eyes The only places I can think of that have ANPR (well, I'm assuming here) are some multi-storey car parks that open the barrier before you've had chance to put the ticket in. Motorways already have cameras for traffic monitoring, but I don't think they're particularly high res – you can see them yourself on the ASFINAG or OAMTC websites.

This does seem unlikely. Public transport is good but not that good, and people like their cars. Infrastructure for electric vehicles isn't that good either. If this was the case, I think at the very least, the press would be whinging about it. I could be a way to surreptitiously reduce the number of old bangers on the road though.

@Scarlet, I'd assumed motorways already had ANPR for monitoring of vignettes/e vignettes but I guess the continued availability of stickers must mess with that.

@Dave of the Marmottes, ah yeah, possibly. I don't actually know, tbh.

It's surprising the infrastructure for electric vehicles, given the really high number you see on the roads.

If it's way of getting rid of old bangers, our 11 year old Euro 5 Transit Custom will probably get caught up in it, that's certainly the case for all the UK charges.

@swskier, ours too, I think (unless it's Euro 6, but I can't remember without going down to look. It's printed on one of those French stickers in the window.) It's coming up to time to think about replacing it, and we were considering electric as we don't do many miles and mostly around the city, but our landlord is a stubborn beggar who doesn't like to bother with anything that doesn't directly benefit him. I know other tenants would like electric vehicles too, but I suspect it will take actual legislation that makes a charging point a requirement before he'll bother, and even then, he probably won't. A mirror for the blind garage exit would be nice too, but he never parks there and doesn't care rolling eyes

We'll probably end up with another largish engine petrol, as they're considerably cheaper than electric to buy as well, and we don't do enough miles to run up a big fuel bill.

Increasing cities around Europe have this for Low Emissions Zones. Had to warn my friend who just drove from Rotterdam to Lisbon. Without planning he was disappointed to not drop in to Paris and Madrid as he had expected.

@Scarlet, ASFINAG already use ANPR for the vignettes and tolls you buy from their website, there is no physical sticker. As far as I am aware it doesn't affect UK registered vehicles as dont believe Austria (or Germany) have an agreement with UK to swap details, no speeding tickets either. All our company cars are electric now, much cheaper for tax and cost practically nothing to run, especially if you have solar panels on the roof!

How does that work for a German resident who buys a sticker at the border? Is the camera accurate enough to pick up stickers as well?

@Dave of the Marmottes, That's the claim but dont see how a camera is ever going to pick up the tiny holes showing the date bought. I suspect they will move to an online only system at some point. I think the Swiss have gone over to an e Vignette of some sort, no more putting vaseline on the windscreen to allow the sticker to be pulled off and used again!
