Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Skiing is expensive shock

If you've got kids in school then the season for anything and everything is during the school holidays Confused

Thinking again about the cost of skiing - it is almost unbelievable that I can be transported to the top of a mountain, quickly and in comfort, as many times as I want in order to be able to slide back down on 100+km of tracks and all for 40 quid a day. That's once up Snowden on the mountain railway! Consider the the capital cost of the infrastructure, the energy maintenance and labour costs to run it, not to mention the army of gnomes who head up the mountain when it gets dark to freshly prepare the pistes for our enjoyment every single night. There is no way the lift pass cost covers all of that.

So, someone is paying or has paid at some point in the past to subsidise my holiday, and for that I am very grateful. Thank you, citizens of Austria! Zum Wohl!

Sailing is another holiday with a reputation for exclusivity and expense but which is actually outstanding value. This time it is the boatowner who is kindly taking the hit. He is probably losing as much in depreciation as you are paying per week to charter. It is also very cost effective in absolute terms - a Nielson sailing holiday is about half the cost of a Nielson beach holiday.

It is almost rude not too!

There are wider programmes that benefit these communities, but the EU spends almost €300m per year on ski resorts, including ERDF (European Regional Development Fund): €204.30 million and Cohesion Fund: €87.56 million.

These communities aren't outlaying their own money.

Without external funding, these valleys would be farming ghost towns, and abandoned villages.

The "Vail model" doesn't fit at all.

@blahblahblah, For most people yes. Folk around here are committed to skiing and I suspect would pay whatever the resorts charge for a lift pass. The reality is that skiing is becoming a minority activity indulged in by wealthy people.

Becoming?

It started out that way. If you want to do it more than a week a year, it's still out of reach of most people.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

The OP is from Germany, quoting an article about Europe (Italy/Germany). He further clarified “most people” of his local are skiing on weekends instead of (or in addition to) the one week a year typical British holiday skiers do.
