I read that Via Lattea gives a 20% discount on lift passes with a valid train ticket to Oulx. Even if I was arriving by coach, could I theoretically hop off at Chiomonte, take the 14-minute ride to Oulx, and nab a 20% discount on my pass?

I checked and the ticket from Oulx to the next station is 3,30e - so you're still saving a chunk!

That's a big old saving then on what has to be one of the cheapest lift passes around.

Only on a 1-day pass though, unless I'm missing something...

Wat do you mean? I think if you buy the train ticket, you get a 25% discount on a 6-day pass also. When I'm looking at going that brings the 6-day pass down to 197e.

The website seems to suggest regional trains are 1 day only. Maybe Modane would count though? But give it a go and report back!

I don't follow. The page I'm looking at says, 'The discount is valid for the purchase of 1-, 2- or 6-day Vialattea Italia ski passes.'

Looks like you need an X-Go card too so you'd have to investigate how easy it is to get one of them as a non resident plus you're only getting 20% discount unless you're on the high speed trains and their loyalty programme.

Is that accurate? The website says:
'25% discount for CartaFRECCIA customers who reach Oulx directly by Frecciarossa or Turin by Frecciarossa or Frecciabianca and then Oulx by Regional train'
CarteFRESSCIA is a free membership (I signed up) and Frecciarossa is just the train company.

I thought Frecciarossa was the High speed bullet trains that just run intercity i.e. probably not possible to find a short distance fare even if you find one that stops in Oulx.
Normally I'd say you might blag it if you simply rock up with a regional ticket but Italians do love their paperwork and it would be totally reasonable for them to ask you to produce your Frecciarossa ticket to Turin.

@Dave of the Marmottes, The Chambery - Turin high speed trains stopped at Oulx in the past. I was in Turin on business and got the train to Oulx then bus up to Sauze and Sestriere on the Saturday and Sunday. From memory, I got a regional train back in the evening, the express one out took about 25 minutes.

Ah interesting. I just googled Frecciarossa and it took me to the Trenitalia website. The operator I was looking at was SF3, not Frecciarossa. My ingenious plan might not be so ingenious after all.

 You know it makes sense.

So if it needs to be a Frecciarossa ticket, you can buy one from Milan to Oulx (Milan to Turin on Frecciarossa and Turin to Oulx on regional) for £25. Not quite the deal I thought it was.

It's a pretty good deal for anyone going all the way by train though - Paris to Oulx is Frecciarossa too (some of them anyway).

From the looks of it, they still do. You can buy Chamberay to Oulx for £45.

Yeah my thought. At least this thread has made me see how fast it is to get a train from Milan Centrale to Oulx so should I ever want to ski Vialattea it becomes a practical option.

Hah! Really good question. The honest answer is I'm going with a package operator and the coach transfer is included. I can decline it but there's no discount on offer.

@ToastMonkey, so don't dick around - get yourself an X Go card if you can and buy the cheapest inbound rail ticket so you're not risking much. Assume you don't actually have to use it if you're simply presenting it at the pass window. Then let us know if the hack works.
Against the spirit of the thing obviously but one might argue you've been greenish by taking a shared transfer coach rather than ragging a hire car.

I'm going towards the end of the season unfortunately. So you can all go, try it out, annoy the Italians, and get the loophole banned before I even arrive

I very much doubt the operator is going to divert the coach off the motorway to a random train station and mess around getting your bags off just for you. Also doubt your fellow travelers would be very impressed either If you dont think thatll be an issue you could ask them to pick you up again at Oulx to save on bus/taxi fare up the mountain.

I mean, the plan isn't to actually get off the coach. The plan is to buy a ticket and show that to the ticket office. Although the coaches actually go stop at Oulx to pap Sestriere folk onto a minibus.
