Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Serre Chevalier/Briancon mid Jan

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hello,
I have a couple of weeks free mid January specifically 10th 24th. I've never skied Serre Chevalier but from my research it seems plenty big enough for a couple weeks skiing. I see currently with the snow conditions only around 50% of slopes are open.

How likely is this to improve by mid January?

Obviously I'm praying for real snow but i've no idea what snow making facilities there are there?

Ins the run all the way down into Briancon usually open this time of year?

Thank you

@JahPastyfari, Serre Chevalier has extensive snowmaking, and they've been gradually opening pistes over the last couple of weeks, perhaps presevering some for when the NY crowds arrive? In good conditions run to Briancon will be open. More snow is definitely needed right now though. I'm not out there at the moment though, so others may have more up to date info.
I'll be there myself in mid-January and we usually have very decent snow.

That's great to know there's plenty of snow making. I haven't even pulled the trigger on my flights yet. Just watching the conditions. But worried I'll hold off too long and the prices will go up haha. Good to know January is usually decent too. Maybe I'll just take a gamble...

@Hells Bells, @JahPastyfari, ok I am usually glass half empty and now I'm feckin 3/4's empty but I and others have never known it so bad, in terms of they have not been using the canon earlier on many popular runs where in the past they always used to.

Case in point being the Casse de Boeuf back into Villeneuve and the Luc back into Chantmerle and up top the Salettes which is closed and you can see that the never used the canon, likewise for the CDB and Salettes now conditions are too mild for snow making I suspect, but why they didn't do it earlier? Thankfully they were on Le Bez and that has been skiing the best , I don't know about Prorel and Briançon sectors, best to look at the interactive piste map to see what's open.

Being glass half fall surely there has to be a decent snow fall at some point and not the dribbles we've been getting.

@JahPastyfari, best to check out the Serre thread in the weather reports section.

I'm back to the Parc this morning to see what's that like for artificial cross country as conditions are pretty torrid elsewhere.

It’s snowing in Cesane Torino (just over the pass) now and due to snow for the next three days….. im hoping it will freshen things up. Montgenevre isn’t too bad right now, pistes are generally quite nice, but occasionally thin in places. Off piste isn’t really an option.

@JahPastyfari, I was in Serre Chevalier first week of March 2024 and the runs down to Briancon were closed due to lack of snow. The black run down to Chantemerle was open but wasn’t especially enjoyable and was carnage at last lift. We only bothered skiing down to the valley a couple of times and just downloaded in the gondolas which was fine. What I would say is if conditions are the same in January when you plan to go, don’t worry too much about being able to ski down to the valley as there was more than enough snow above mid stations and in places the conditions were excellent.

I certainly wouldn’t not go to SC if no low lying snow and really enjoyed it there in any case. Fingers crossed this dry spell passes temps drop and there is fresh snow for you.

I'm thinking perhaps I'll get my flights booked but hold off on everything else and see where the snow is best. Bardoneccia and Via Lattea being in easy reach of Turin, could also be options on my budget. Looks like Bardo is getting a decent flurry today.

The closer we get to the 10th the less chance of fresh snow in seeing.

A new question. With the amount of runs currently open will that be enough to keep me entertained for 13 days skiing?

@JahPastyfari, see what we get this weekend, if you can that is; some forecasts are showing a "dump" whilst others are dialling back on one.

So much for that. Looks like I'll be waiting a week or so to see if any snow materialises.

I have! But I'm half expecting it to fizzle out like the last forecast Eh oh!

If I do go it's going to be an incredibly last minute booking.
