 Poster: A snowHead

I need to get NYE week booked for family (2 teens 14, 16), all good piste skiers, but unsure where is best. Options I've looked at
Chamonix - great town, skied 2 days there a few years back in brevent-flegere, would bussing around valley at NYE be too much faff?
Val Cenis - dont know much about here but seems highly regarded, is snow okay around NYE?
Les Deux Alpes - skied here before and quite liked it, available accommodation not great, town is nothing special
Arc 1950 - ive skied here twice from arc 2000, love it, 1950 looks great though not truly traditional.
Solden/Ischgl - hotels available not as good as other options, but look like good resorts
Last NYE we did Canazei and year before St Anton both nice villages with good skiing. This year I fancied Chamonix as kids would love the town, but worry about how much time lost/stress gained there is in travelling valley, found a few hotels in the town. Also heard top lift at Argentierre is still not opened. Feel like I'm favouring Val Cenis but dont know much about it and unsure on NYE snow conditions
Any help appreciated.

The buses are simple to use in chamonix, i find it all a bit of a waff on using the bus myself. Perhaps I’ve been a bit spoilt. The town is low down, when I went no snow even halfway up the mountain it looked like. The top of brevent/flegere was fine though. I did enjoy chamonix overall. I think the town might be a nice place to spend NYE.
What about Alpe d’huez? / Verbier?
I liked the town of lDA - i thought it was quite bustling. I’d imagine some stuff going on there at NYE.
You don’t mention some of the obvious? 3V / tignes? Have you ruled those out?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Did Val Thorens last easter, VdI previous. Alpe d'Huez 3 years ago. We liked them all but want to see somewhere new, Chamonix/LDA was longer ago so returning now would feel different with our improved skiing abilities.
A resort with some tree skiing was another consideration in case of bad weather. LDA would be good choice if hotel was better, and more central.
Verbier only has airbnbs. Having a spa/ pool at last few trips has been a welcome bonus so ideally wanted that again.
Courchevel, meribel out of price range/ no availability.

I think we need to define “best” then study MCDM (sometimes referred to as MCDA)

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Main criteria was a nice festive village and ski area that will have decent snow conditions at NYE.
Val Cenis sounds good but was unsure about snow conditions around New Year and the size being smaller than other places we've been. If not there I would probably go for one of the places we have been before

Serfaus/Fiss/Ladis is a good ski area with lots of good hotels. Of the three villages my favourite is Serfaus. It’s closest to the higher end of the ski area and the baby underground system makes it really easy to get to the gondolas from the hotel.
If you want a lively party town then Saalbach is fun.

@sweetscience, NY eve in Chamonix is a bit mad - very busy but in a festive way. Chamonix very definitely depends on where you stay. E.g. you can walk to Brevent from the town centre, you can take a train to Flégère and Argentière. Trains now running mostly every 1/2 hour.

Saalbach - We're not big apres skiers, I like the look of saalbach but ski areas under 2000m makes me worry about snow conditions.
Will look into Serfaus.

Didn't know this, I thought it was bus journey, i imagine train is the better way. Chamonix town is very appealing, a shame Grand Montets isnt open until next year

But it’s in the eastern Alps - colder than further west, and with a lower snow line.

It’s amazing how Austria has produced so many world class skiers, frankly…..

Past 2 NYE have been to Le Grand Bornand and then Bad Hofgastein with our group of teens.Everyone loved both the skiing and the villages. Great buzz in both. And not manic like the French mega resorts.

Had a NY week in L2A once. One of the more fun resorts I'd say for stuff going on.
Green run back down to valley was of course a lifethreatening shitshow.

You would normally be fine for snow at Val Cenis, but there have been a few occasions when some lower runs without snowmaking were rather skimpy at that time of year. The slopes are all North-facing which helps (as at Val d'sere, only slightly further North, the other side of the valley can sometimes be almost bare, but it isn't used for skiing).
Compared to some of the enormous resorts it is smaller, of course, but the runs don't have the same-y feeling you get in some resorts. There is also some good off-piste if you know where to go, especially if you visit some of the other resorts in the Haute Maurienne (Valfréjus, La Norma, Bonneval sur Arc and Aussois, though the pistes at the last are mostly rather flat). There is a lift pass which allows you to visit them all if you wish.
