Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. I know it can be bypassed and I would rather not be on a dodgy lift but still could be a bit of a pain.

Shouldn't be too bad as the Sella Ronda traffic now goes onto the Portados gondola

https://www.skiresort.info/ski-resort/arabbamarmolada/ski-lifts/l209/

The Marmolada traffic goes on the big capacity Pescoi/Europa gondola which also carries on to Porta Vescovo with the second stage, which you could do if the Portados has a long queue

Let Bobby McFerrin cheer you up a bit! wink

New to Dolomites this year! Base on Alba.

I was wondering if, going from Arabba to Belvedere, is it possible to reach Alpenrose slope from the top of Portados gondola, or the only way is through Pescoi + Forcella Europa?

If you look at google maps, you can see a 'track' from near the top of Portadas lift that you can take to get to the Alpenrose piste (can be a bit sketchy tho'..!)

Igor uses the track, at about 7 minutes, in this video

Thanks! I see the track on the maps. I was sure there could be a way by the looks of it and the higher elevation of Portados

That track is a road of some sort - it becomes more obvious on google maps after it crosses the salere piste.

If it’s all covered in snow it may be doable but if not and that bottom section is definitely a road - you will have to walk up salere to get back onto the left hand branch which joins alpenrose.

Surely much better skiing down the portados red and taking the carpazza chair.

There hasn't been much news on the weather front, it's mild in the early part of the week, but at least no rain or double digit temps are forecast in the Dolomites.

wePowder mention rain at 2100m in Tignes, snowpack in Switzerland getting a serious hit under 2000m and temps as high as 15-20C on the North side of the Alps with a strong southerly Föhn wind...

Turning cooler later in the week in the Dolomites...

Mild, dry, sunny and light winds. Currently 1.4c at 1460m with 87% humidity. With the base mostly in position it should give some reliable skiing into Christmas. The trend is very slowly cooling towards the end of December.
Meanwhile a fairly terrible set up for the UK with continuing heavy rain and gales in the saturated tropic air.

hmm, you're more positive than me, I'm with @Garfield ! The rifugio at Porta vescovo is a great place for a coffee with a fantastic picnic spot, it's very popular. The only way to get there will be via the Pecoi gondola and as there was almost always a queue for both this and the cable car so it will be interesting to see what the queues are like. It's worth noting that last year the gondola also had to be closed for a while so hopefully they can keep it running all season as having both cloed at the same time would be a major problem. I was told by a local that both of these are old and they were struggling to get spare parts for the cable car, there was some surprise that it actually reopened at all after it's accident, given they've had months to fix it I'm guessing that the opening date of 6th Feb is more a desire than a firm plan and it'll be ready when it's ready, hopefully sooner rather than later.

I also hope they'll make a real effort to keep track at the top of the steep section of the Portados red open, those couple of hundred metres can be carnage and last year the cut through was roped off due to lack of snow forcing everyone down what is probably now the steepest/bumpiest section of the SR which can only be avoided if you go via Portavescovo.

That area right next to Arabba village must be on the list for investment, it's crying out for the existing lifts to be upgraded and maybe a new gondola from the same side as the road as the existing ones across to to the top Burz to take traffic from the Arabba fly and Burz chairlift.

it is a bit steepish but IMO that is nowhere near as bad as it's very wide so you don't see the same number of falls and frozen skiers there as on the other section and it doesn't seem to get as bumpy. The good thing is that that for the Portados red the cut through the trees exists, the bad news is that they often close it presumably due to lack of snow, if they keep it open by moving some snow and put up a sign saying alternative route it would help. It's like the top section clockwise from Boe, later in the day it can be quite horrible but they sometimes put up a sign that sends people on the not so obvious route that misses out the worst part.

TBH Arabba is not my favourite part of the area, completely agree about it being the wrong valley!

However, the Rifugio at Portavescovo does have the most incredible views combined with a picnic area and good hot chocolate so is a must stop for us. Also, everyone seems to ski the blacks on the Portavescovo side and miss the quiet Burz black which has a nice steep section to practice on.

@sean1967, glad you're having a good time and thanks for the updates. My wife and I are very jealous but will be heading out on 4th Jan so only a few weeks to go.

I'm not an expert skier so although I don't mind steeper stuff, I'm not a fan when it's steep and busy. It seems to me that understandably a lot of true experts head to Arabba for the steeper sections so I sometimes feel like a moving slalom pole! This is unlike the blacks at e.g. dantercepies where the vibe seems a bit quieter and more relaxed. This is of course all in my british overly self conscious head Very Happy

I agree, the reds and blacks in Selva are somewhat underappreciated. Too many head off round the ronda, missing out on what's nearby.

The Dantercepies downhill after the lift shuts is one of the highlights of the day.

I would say it is the correct valley to start your day.
You can be off on your travels well before the hordes make it over from Selva or Covarra Laughing
Just with one lift down there will be a bottle neck at times.
We have been often enough to have an idea how to avoid most holdups most of the time.
I've never got to the end of the day thinking I have not skied enough due to lift ques.
Poor visibility yes but that's down to my lack of skill. rolling eyes

New lifts are like extra lanes on motorways the holdups end up somewhere else.

Look like high pressure and wall-to-wall sunshine for the next 9 days...at least it gets cooler all the while after tomorrow and below freezing at night for snowmaking...

https://www.bergfex.com/arabba/wetter/prognose/

Local forecast suggests some temperature inversions as high pressure builds, so warmer in the sunshine on the mountain and staying colder in the valleys with some fogs. So if it's a bit gloomy in resort, get up higher and rise above it! Cool

Obscene conditions persist.

Despite the strong sun, the latent chillybalticness in the snow has kept the slopes in good shape.

Only the bottom of the piste down from Boé to Campolongo showed deterioration, softer than the average penalty awarded to Rangers.
