Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

The new black run at Ciampinoi. Ah, this explains the ground works we saw in Selva this summer Cool

does anyone know where this is ? I can't see anything on the piste maps. Maybe an extra section on the black down to Selva from Ciampinoi to reduce congestion?

As you look up the mountain from Ciampinoi base station it is to the right of the 'old' piste

You can see it in my link from earlier

SR now open up to 333kms plus 162 lifts.

Nearby Kronplatz now up to 91kms and 27 lifts open.

Bit of a warm up the next week but staying dry. Still making snow tonight but reported depths at Corvara are good and seem to be well on towards season target depths.

Looks like the under used run off of the back of Ciampinoi which brings you back in to Selva under the Ciampinoi gondola.

The no.3 black was always there, it split off the initial shoulder of the Saslong WC run but it used to join into no.4 red halfway down to Selva. It looks like they have reprofiled and reopened a lower section that had been used as a ski run in the past and drops more directly to the Ciampinoi base station.

I posted this in the Birthday Bash thread, but is of general interest for anyone doing the Sella Ronda in the clockwise direction:

The funivia cable car from Arabba to the top of Porta Vescovo (lift no.1 on the Arabba piste map) that experienced an accident in March where a descending cabin (fortunately empty apart from the driver) crashed into the lower cable car building is still currently out of service and according to the Dolomiti Superski website is due to recommence operation from 6th February 2026.

There's still access to the top of Porta Vescovo of course using the two stage gondola (what the link refers to as lift numbers 2 and 4, I think they've changed the numbers of some of the lifts this year, on previous piste maps the two stage gondola from Arabba was shown as lift numbers 20 and 21)

The last left turn before dropping back in under Gondolas had a significant opposite camber to it. You couldn't pile in with too much speed on. We'll give it a go next week and report. Cool

The 'new' piste off of Ciampinoi was in last year I'm pretty sure. It links Ciampinoi 'front' to Ciampinoi 'back' run as we informally refer to each.

Hi all,

New here - I have been trying to do some research online around this but thought it might be quicker to jump on here and ask all you lovely experts.

I am looking to do a last-minute solo trip to the Dolomites next week. I'm looking for accessibility from Innsbruck, decent snow (even if from a snow cannon), and a nice base where there are likely to be a few food / accommodation options (ideally ski in / ski out). I'm a pretty reasonable skier (20+ weeks, most of it last few years) so am agnostic about the difficulty of the surrounding slopes.

Does anything jump to mind with these criteria in terms of which town to stay in? I have read quite a bit of the thread above but have never been to the Dolomites before so am not sure how easy it is to get around, and I always end up feeling a bit bamboozled when I start researching a new ski area online.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Mike

@michael99887766, welcome to snowHeads! snowHead

When you say accessibility from Innsbruck, are you looking for public transport, private transfer or self-drive in a rental car?

Val Gardena is the obvious choice to put you at one corner of the huge 470km Sella Ronda linked area, with Selva being the most convenient spot at the head of the valley.

That's where @sean1967 is currently. He may be along later with some further advice once he's finished entertaining the bar staff at Saltos!! Toofy Grin Laughing

There are public transport options from INN to VG which will be the cheapest for a solo traveller...airport bus to train station, train over the Brenner Pass to Ponte Gardena, then local bus up the valley.

What are your dates and budget? I can see if I can quickly spot something suitable.

@luigi

Thanks Luigi - this is super helpful.

Dates would probably be Weds 10th - Mon 15th (so realistically, four days skiing and two days travelling).

I would probably rent a car for the flexility and reliability - looks like I could probably do that for about €200 inc. fuel - unless the public transport options are super regular and reliable.

I am lucky to be quite well paid / am also a workaholic, so budget is not a massive constraint (within reason - am not an oligarch!). I would rather spend a bit more for a hotel that's nicer / closer to pistes.

Obviously not expecting you to plan my holiday, but yes any suggestions very gratefully received!

Bus and train combo, bus from Innsbruck Flughafen to Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof, then train to Ponte Gardena/Waidbruck...about 2h16m & €26 one way with connections roughly one per hr...

https://shop.oebbtickets.at/en/ticket

Local bus timetable, you need 350 or 360 from Ponte Gardena to Selva, one of each per hr. Timetable changes on your weekend (from 14.12.25), but it looks like the last bus up the valley is just after 8pm, so hopefully your flight arrives in Innsbruck with enough time to make that...

Yes, renting a car would be the most convenient and the cars from INN usually come with winter tyres, though parking them can sometimes be an issue in a busy resort centre.

@michael99887766,

This is in a good spot, just above nursery slopes, right near Dantercepies gondola...

https://www.booking.com/Share-q7324OA

This is ski-in ski-out, right near the Ciampinoi gondola, which is the other main lift in Selva

https://www.booking.com/Share-Y2BRXRs

I've not stayed in either place, so not a personal recommendation as such, but the reviews will tell you what to expect.

If you can afford either of those, they are in good locations to explore the whole Sella Ronda area and Selva has some nice restaurants and a bit of apres, nightlife, etc

This looks the cheapest thing near a Sella Ronda lift that you could drive to. Great spot for skiing, just dated decor in the apartment and Colfosco is quiet, you might need to drive 3km to Corvara for more life.

https://www.booking.com/Share-4ZKymQ

The Hotel Luianta is just over the road next to the lift and piste, they have a nice restaurant, they might even do you a breakfast/dinner if you ask.

This looks nice in Corvara, not far at all from the main Boe & Borest gondolas which get you both ways on the Sella Ronda, 200m/3mins walk away and similar distance into resort centre...and Corvara is sooo beautiful! Cool

You can see the place in the bottom left of this photo...

There are cheaper options in Corvara, you'll see them listed below Ciasa Verena in the results, but they aren't as convenient for the lifts, but you might be willing to compromise on that if you have a car to get you there and back. There is parking by the lifts, but I think it is paid.

@michael99887766, Innsbruck to the Dolomites is a doddle on public transport. Couple of trains through the Brenner Pass and a bus.

Kronplatz and Val Gardena are the easiest I'd say.

When you say next week, do you mean from the 13th? If you have booked your flights, decide on where to go late next week. All resorts are as quiet as they will be all season from the 13th to 20th. The forecast here is quite warm next week with no new snow predicted. If you haven't booked flights, why lock yourself in? Could be top conditions in France etc?

If you're flying to Innsbruck you have the entirety of Austria also easily accessible on public transport.

If you're set on the Dolomites, I'd say Selva is your place. But you can't tell anyone else....I'm deadly serious......horses head in your bed if you do. On Wednesday or Thursday put in a non-binding request through the Val Gardena website. You'll get plenty offers. Don't stress the ski in ski out, there's brilliant lockers at both gondolas. A wee walk in the morning, stretch the legs, un caffé (and a tab if that's your thing) with the ski instructors and you'll be ready to go.

Like you we love the Dolomites from our first visit 2010 staying in Crystal chalet Vanadis (sadly no more) & making friends we meet up with in Selva regularly we have been back every year since, either with tour company’s or independently & being a tight northerner! We try to find the best price to get back as often as we can. Unfortunately Inghams are only offering this early season trip from Gatwick but worth the long drive from Cumbria.

Luigi,

take a break from helping us all booking hotel rooms and let's talk food ... Very Happy

In my previous visits I enjoyed Jimmi and L'Tama in Alta Badia, Troier in Seceda/ValGardena and Tirler in Alpe di Suisi ... and many, many more for a quick pit stop - plenty of good ones to list them all here and some so-so not worth mentioning here. I liked Alta Badia's collaboration with recognized chefs from the region who helped create unique dishes with local touch and some money would go to the charity benefiting local causes.

Looking forward to trying new places to enjoy "ski lunches" !

That could cause a bottle neck ?
