Looking good !!!
Does anybody have anything to say about FlySki shared transfer option from VCE/Marco Polo to Val di Fassa/Alba ? It is prominently advertised/displayed on official Val di Fassa site, must be good ...
I would not mind taking a shared bus ride, it works with my schedule ...

@Mollerski, reassuring stuff. Positive enough looking snow at the moment and coldish on the forecast. I might go out 5th to 12th......
Any news for the area? All I can find is a section added to La Ciampinoi 3. That and it appears Greens is under new leadership and leaning towards fancy snacks rather than champagne and caviar. I much preferred the old style Goalies' / Greens.

@luigi, yeah, sad to see to be honest. I don't see any great benefit of the law because helmet wearing is almost universal. I wear one 90% of the time. Only on quiet days with great weather do I take it off and I always ski more conservatively when I do.
Some updated lifts on there 'New 10-seater gondola lift “Lezuo-Belvedere” replaces the existing chairlift'

I'm never that keen on seeing chairlifts replaced by gondolas, it just means another place where you have to take skis off, pick them up, carry them, remove snow/ice from boots and put them back on again...or am I just getting lazy?!?

Yes Gondolas are a bit of a pain with telemark equipment. Essentially because you have to get on your knees to take them off and put them on again, which gets harder as you get older

spoke to an Italian friend this morning he said it had been -15 in MdC so checked the webcams and the snow ploughs are coming out
this is the car park from where the Fortini and Groste gondolas meet.

As long as it increases capacity I'm definitely glad to see this replaced, it could be a major bottleneck where you often had to side step up in a scrum to get into the queue proper. It's a shame that you get off one Gondola, ski a few hundred metres then get on another though.

@richb67, yeah, an 8 man chair would have been better. They should build one at Saas Becce too.

Modern Gondolas load more reliably than chairlifts and consequently have fewer stoppages. They have higher capacity yet need fewer staff to operate. I believe there isn’t much difference in cost from a big chairlift but ultimately they are future proof because of their multi user accessibility.

Modern chairlifts are pretty reliable. I feel that travel distance, nature of the topography and exposure to weather are factors which determine Gondola v chair. I don't know definitively, but I'd guess that a gondola lift is significantly more expensive to build. Gondola stations have huge garages to put the bubbles away at night. Piz Seteur, the newest gondola lift in Selva cost 38m Euro to build I was told.

Chairs in the likes of Les Gets and Morzine have bike holders attached to the back of the seat for the summer, so you can get a number of bikes on a chair, but probably only one or two in a gondola, so mutli user accessibility isn't a big differentiator.
also, I'd question gondolas requiring fewer staff to operate, my gut feeling is that a gondola station has more staff than a chair lift station.

Getting back to the important stuff......it doesn't look like the 30-40cm forecast has materialised.

Have usually found getting up to Belvedere from the other side the bigger bottle neck ?
Though only so much can be done year on year.
We first went to Dolomites about twenty or so years ago. The amount of improvements since then is mind boggling. Not just to lifts but getting rid of road crossings etc.
I do prefer chairs with hoods to Gondola but other than a ski pass once a year I'm not paying for them.
Getting on and off Gondola can get tedious by the end of the day.

I've seen to many falls and twisted knees to be happier with high capacity chairs than gondolas.

The worst pinch point on the SR (clockwise) for me always seems to be the campologo bec des roces quad.
An absolute poo-poo show - made worse by the fact you have to queue uphill.
And no alternative.
They upgraded the costorata going the other way from the same place to an 8 man a couple of seasons back.

Can gondolas cope with higher wind speeds than chairs? The only gondola in the Espace Diamant is a new one (few years old) and it replaced a rather slow chair which was often stopped by not-very-high winds.

No, looks to have been a bit more in MdC but Santa Croce is looking very pretty and more importantly is also showing as -3 deg.

@richb67, it looks cold for the foreseeable too. I am thinking of heading out on the 4th to ski a week from the 5th. I have a cheap flight to Venice and planned on leaving it very late to decide where to ski. Ideally Dolomites as I plan on a season pass but I could stay on the train and go to Austria if there was a big difference in snow quality.
I've been in Val Gardena the week before Christmas a few times but never as early as the first week in December.
What are the thoughts of those who have? @Mollerski, @luigi?
Given the recent cold weather facilitating snow making and the few dustings of snow, it should be ok? I only ski on the piste.

@sean1967, I've never been that early -- but with the extensive snowmaking in the Dolomites, you are pretty much guaranteed piste skiing, even if it is just white stripes down brown slopes (which I have had twice in January...)

@sean1967, I've never been in December either, but it's looking pretty good at this stage this winter, with a fair bit of natural snow to make it pretty, plus all the usual snowmaking on piste.
There has been more snowfall North of the border, as is often the case, but there should be a lot of kms open in the Sella Ronda for opening weekend.

Be careful, it's a very slippery slope. Three trips can easily turn into four when you have a season pass whispering to you. |
I'm going for 8 weeks (first ski day 15 December). Even then I'm already thinking of a crafty visit somewhere else around Easter because my not-yet-bought season pass is already whispering to me!
