It doesn't bother me, as I can morev than cope with those conditions, but neither route is much fun for an intermediate, and no way should the main route be labelled red when it is harder than all the blacks around the ronde.
Who wants to catch a bus between areas anyway? I'll go to London if I want to catch a bus!
(Our friends did drive to Plan Gralba on the last day btw). |
Grow a pair or go elsewhere. Clearly Selva is too 'extreme' for you and your bunch of melts. Look at Passo Tonale. |
Oooh, touched a nerve did I?
Selva extreme? Hardly. The Blacks would all be red in France.
I was making a specific comment about two slopes, one of which should not be a red when due to the orientation and steepness it ends up a very bumpy slope that is far harder than any black around the Ronde.
Will I get told off if I also say the lift system isn't a patch on the 3 Vallees or Tignes Val d'Isere?
I would still go back for a third trip, but I know the benefits and limitations of the area. Unlike Mollerski
I think you need to grow up Mollerski - your comment was totally uncalled for.

@Lost in the trees, I always thought Passo Tonale was indeed in the Dolomites, or at least is on some of the ski passes, although nowhere near as beautiful as the Sella area Dolomites. Its a great area for kids, with a load of gentle blues and reds on the main side of the resort and a reasonable smattering of ski in ski out type convenience. Good tuition as ever. The runs lookers right and left of the main resort are the most interesting, and lookers right will probably have the best snow apart from the main red / black down from the glacier. That is north facing, can be pretty challenging if hardpack. The glacier to Ponte di legno run is one of the longer descents in Europe.
I've been there twice in February and both times Temu and Ponte Di Legno were slushy but as it happens it looks like there is a cold front coming in the next few days so you might be luckier. If I was going I would definitely consider a day trip to Madonna. There is also good off piste skiers right off the glacier, long run involving a tunnel, but maybe consider a guide.
If interested in food don't miss palla di neve, lookers right of the ski resort. Looks and feels like a work canteen but the food is excellent.

Thank you. Am thinking of bringing my big skis and doing some off piste as snow looks quite good. I did the long run from glacier all the way down few Easters ago. Thanks for recommendation for Palla di neve, it's right by our hotel (sporting).

I'm not sure I would agree with the lifts being significantly worse than 3V. There are some older lifts on the Italian side of things but in the Sud Tyrol there have been constant improvements mostly because the taxes don't go to central government and a significant amount of money is ploughed back into improving the infrastructure annually. I would take the odd older lift any day of the week to ski where it is better value and where there is better hot chocolate, and food! I'd add that the people are nicer too but having just come back from the Flora I am going to slightly adjust that sentiment.

That run off Ciampinoi towards Plan de Gralba is carnage for anybody but strong intermediates, at least 40% of people are falling.
New "black" (#3 ?) down to Selva gets soft towards the end. No easy way down to Selva with #4 closed.
Loads of fun for strong skiers
Arabba is skiing the best, anything north facing is great.
Some snow expected tonight, wind is picking up but still sunny with some high clouds rolling in.
Empty, sunny and just nice !!!

We (three middle-aged intermediates) are in Arabba this week and are having an amazing time. Yes - it get slushy lower down in the afternoon but the conditions higher up have been astonishingly (to us) amazing, especially in comparison to the comparable French mega-resorts. In any of the Tarentaise resorts we'd expect to be facing endless hard-packed pistes that we mostly 'survive' rather than enjoy, whereas here we're actively seeking out harder runs, and enjoying them. Maybe this is because there seem to be so few people here so runs aren't getting trashed through sheer volume of traffic? And yes - I know the gradings are perhaps not comparable, but it has been an eye-opener to us... the two more nervous skiers of the group both commented how much fun they've had. OK - the run from Ciampinoi down to Plan De Gralba this afternoon was a mess but we got down it ok and thought it was rather fun. I'd take that any day over the rock hard, scraped-off runs down eg into Arc 1800 when it hasn't snowed for a while.

the lifts are categorically not "worse" than the 3 Valleys. the lifts system is efficient, and runs well and the orange and green sella ronda signs are brilliant.
it does feel quieter than the 3 Valleys - which is a good thing. the dolomiti superski app labelling is perhaps not as good as it could be, but the actual lifts are brilliant.

Not sure I agree re some of the signage.
It's fine if you have been in the past and have an idea where you are heading.
We have came across a few confused folk over the years.
Lots of investment in the lifts etc though.

The orange and green signage is generally good, but not perfect. The first time we went round, we couldn't get out of Plan de Gralba! We were going round in circles (I can't remember if it was green or orange).
And this year, on our 3rd go round the orange route (1 per visit, not 3rd in the same day!) we were somewhere in Val de Fassa and the signs were very confusing - several lifts were available and it definitely wasn't clear which was the right one. It was 2 yrs since we'd last done it and just couldn't remember.

My only complaint about the SR signage is that they could/should be bigger.
There are quite a few places where you can miss one if it's busy or poor vis, or simply by virtue of being on the wrong side of a wide run.
It's particularly a problem if heading back from a day out, and both signs point in the same direction for a while.
If leading a group on the BB, there are some intersections where I have to make sure I'm there first to make sure nobody goes the wrong way because the sign was not visible enough.

Do tell where the 2 and 3 man chairs asre in the 3 Valllees, and where there are slow attached 4 man chairs.
Those are demonstratable examples of the lift system being nowhere near as good.
And 4 lifts needed to get from Colfosco to the Passo Gardena?
I have enjoyed my trips to the area, but unlike some some, I can see its downsides, and areas that could clearly be improved.

I didn’t orange SR on my own and with my 7 year last week. Both times I saw complete carnage from other groups after the shirt lift that leads to the road crossing in selva. Both times half the group continued to campinoi lifts and the rest down the track. Was entertaining seeing the chaos ensue but the sign is not much bigger than A4 sized to the take the slow track.
Similarly saw people go the wrong way on Falk but that’s fairly well signed posted.
On the Val di Fassa ones the SR both ways seems to signposted off almost all
Lifts there including in Buffaure so hard to understand how you missed that one.

It was absolutely awful. Lubo was great as always, 'Madame' AKA Petra was as stony faced as usual, food not as good as last year - not all of it seemed to be home cooked. But breakfast on the pick up morning was diabolical. We were told by Petra the eve before that we could get breakfast at 06.30 rather than giving us a packed lunch. We duly got up early and went downstairs to be told by Grandma and the other bloke (Petra's husband?) that breakfast was at halb seben, halb seben!!!!!! We tried to explain what Petra had said and eventually after much grumbling and muttering they opened the dining room by which time there was not enough time to have breakfast so we decided to make a couple of rolls each. That resulted in the husband and Grandad shouting in German and wagging their fingers at us from the bar until my husband went in there and told them that their customer service was poor and that the only reason we were making rolls was because they took so long to open for breakfast. The husband then skulked off and we left, with our rolls. Honestly I have never been spoken to like that in any hotel anywhere in my life. So never again for us. We'll go to La Pineta or the Ingram in future for better food and a much warmer welcome.

@melbouch, The "Husband" is Kristoff, Petra's Bro. Yeah, it's been on the slide for a while. I would've dumped it 3/4 years ago, but my mates had a nostalgic love for the place. Petra was becoming more and more bitter and sarccy. I wondered if it was just me? We're DIY, so the options are endless. We may go back to The Astor which is B&B, but they offer a great evening meal deal at the restaurant opposite which is nice and flexi time wise.
