Think they were on Pordoi the day before. In fact, I think I remember seeing a McConkey would do it sticker in the restaurant in Pordoi last year en route to doing Lasties. There's definitely something about him in that restaurant.

@luigi it looks like a fair amount of rain at Dolomites villages altitudes on Sunday/Monday, then a sustained spell of cold and some snow every day for the foreseeable. Very cold overnight.
What are you seeing on your favoured meteorological sites?

Definitely Sasongher, and it seems his last run would therefore have been the top half of Val Scura - at 02.03 here:-

That's so sad hearing it retold by his buddy!
As to where he met his end...if you watch and listen, they both successfully land the Val Scura/Sassongher jumps (3:20-3:57). It's the next evening at 'another cliff' (3:58-5:14) and it looks like the Sella Massif/Pordoi) that the tragic accident happens!
Maybe that's why there's something about him up at Rifugio Maria?
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

wePowder mentions the chance of some snow action later in the week in N Italy...
The southern Alps may also see more significant precipitation due to the formation of a low-pressure system over northern Italy. We’ll keep you updated in the coming days on all the exciting details that will undoubtedly appear on the weather charts.
Very difficult to reserve a week or two in Late January/early February (:
I am frustrated with their antiquated booking system ... put out the request, wait, no, go again ... I do beleive that Olymics have something to do with this, it is mid November and no decent availabilty for Corvara, Selva, St.Cristina, Colfosco ... !?
Maybe something to do with IKON pass and Olympics

@Cheapski, Why leave it so late?
Not like the olympics being announced last minute.

It’s not just the Olympics, the last few years I’ve noticed things getting booked up earlier and earlier. I booked for Badia (late Jan) a couple of months ago and there was hardly any availability for that area of the Dolomites even then.
Anyway, almost time to start the daily webcam checks!

On booking.com in Colfosco there’s definitely availability at that time. Are you averse to paying for a nice hotel or wanting unusual arrival/departure days which might not be liked by providers?

2 months ahead is not "advanced" booking and it is considered "last minute" ️
I am adverse to $4000 week.
Problem is it shows availability but once wanting to book it says "send request" ... and 24 hours later response comes "sorry, booked" ...
single traveler, 2 weeks, should be easy ... no ?

Yep, I'm seeing loads of stuff on booking.com for 2 adults 24-31 Jan in Sella Ronda resorts, Selva, S Cristina, nice studio in Arabba £1044
Nice B&B in Colfosco for £859 31Jan-7Feb, lots of things in Corvara too for a bit more £££
I suppose none of it is particularly Cheapski though! The Sella Ronda is too popular now
And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

You will struggle if you are looking to split a week, only the priciest places will do that, ideally needs to be Sat-Sat for the best value.
I guess you booked flights already??
Go on booking.com, everything you see there is available and bookable online, if the local tourist site system is frustrating you
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

The problem is what you "see" as available it is not really available once you put request/ready to pay ... that's what i am reffering as anitiquated booking system ...
one click, booked, done - let's go skiing !
But no in this case, send a polite request, get a polite negative response, start again ...

Have you tried booking.com?
When I said not to split weeks, I meant not arriving on a day other than Saturday, but it might be helpful to search for 10-17 and 17-24 separately to find more availability, as one place might be full one week and have space the other. It will mean moving on the middle Saturday, but if that's the price of finding somewhere??

Luigi can you help me book 2 weeks, $1500/week/single traveler ?
I will take Selva, Corvara, Colfosco, St. Cristina ... Canazei maybe ... place to sleep, I will indulge in local cuisine on my own.

You're right! I stand corrected, knew I shouldn't have questioned your local knowledge. Does look like pordoi type area kind of looks like the bit above the run down to arabba. Very sad but I suppose if you live on the edge with no margin for error. His point would be better to live so fully doing what you love than slaving away in a job you hate.

@Cheapski, I know is not on your list but have you considered kronplatz? There is a bb in town centre for £1300 rated fabulous in booking.com from the 10th to 24th
I have skied twice there and I think the resort is ok and so so easy to go to Alta badia with the very regular bus. I have never done it but it is also possible to ski the three peaks ski area. The hotel is called Villa dolomites hut BB.

January has become the new March. Because conditions/weather from mid Feb onwards have become unreliable over recent winters, visitors are going earlier. This is why we're seeing prices up and limited availability in January.

Nice idea! But that place is a 22min walk to the nearest lift. There may be a skibus that trawls the around village I suppose.
Also, if you really want to ski the Sella Ronda, San Vigilio is not where you want to place yourself. That trek over Piz de Plaies, the bus trip from Piculin to Badia, ski Badia to La Villa, onto Corvara and all the way back would seriously dent exploring time, would do your head in after 2 weeks. You might do it once if you were staying in SV for a week maybe, but not regularly.

I've found him some options and sent a PM, one in Canazei to follow on from the week at the B&B in Alba, both only 3-5mins from Sella Ronda lifts. They are the best value options if you don't mind being that side.
I also found places in S Cristina, Colfosco, Corvara in budget and one that busted the budget in Selva.
No reply yet, but I think there's a timezone difference.
It's tricky looking for accommodation for others as everyone has different needs, expectations and wants and for the Sella Ronda resorts, you need to know which airport and what sort of transfer as that will rule some places out, how close they need to be to a lift as some ppl are averse to walking or skibuses and then what they need for the evening in terms of restaurants, entertainment, too quiet, too busy, etc
And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

The standouts for the sella Ronda are the new 3s cable way at Col Rodello which will make Canazei a quicker point of entry, the new gondola to the pordoi pass and the new first stage Gondola at Santa Croce which we used in the summer. The replacement of the Forcelles chair is apparently because the existing chair was simply getting old. We also saw the big new underground reservoir just above the Alpina lift which should help maintain the reliability of the Colfosco sector. Each year they seem to spend a lot of money upgrading the snow making system, without which they simply couldn’t operate as a commercial ski area.
Just 13 days to go now before target opening day at Kronplatz. Looks to be snowing at the top tonight and then cool enough from tomorrow for snow making over the next 7 days. They should have long enough to get the snow down if it doesn’t go warm again and it stays predominantly dry. On opening day they normally have about 20 lifts running and 30-50km of piste open.

The new 3S Col Rodella lift is at Campitello and with double the capacity of the old cablecar, it should reduce queues there. It's the first main Sella Ronda lift you hit as you come up Val di Fassa so it did get busy. I waited 50mins there once at the start of Jan when the New Year crowds were still about!
Though, the gondola at Canazei must be getting near its sell by date too, it's now 34 years old!
It gets a lot of sun in the Edelweiss Valley above Colfosco, esp as the season progresses
Looking forward to seeing the snowy progress on the cams over the next few weeks!!

Conduttore Luigi, truly thank you for really great "personal travel agent" service
My window is Jan10.-Jan.28, flying into Venice.
Alba and Edy's it is and I will look into changing to something around the following week. It is the only way to still get some around $1000/week. For $2000 it better be HB and really nice place close to lifts, but I prefer self catering with big lunches and light dinner/snack before bed time. Cornetto and latte make me happy in the morning.
Very familiar with St.Cristina/Selva and liked being based there for the ease of accessibility, facilities, variety of skiing and quality of food and accommodation. But it did get harder and more expensive trying to book "low season". Still on track to come back first 2 weeks of March but with my spouse this time.
I was spending a lot of ski time in Colfosco and Corvara/Alta Badia and like it, it seems that Val Gardena and Alta Badia are more on the "sunny side" of great SR and the prices and popularity do show it. Very intrigued by Canazei and the whole new lift situation out of Campitello (not sure how their bus system works, will look more into it). Val Gardena has superb public bus system. Admittedly, not a big fan of Belvedere plateau lift system but Alba might be the right uplift spot if venturing further out. And access to the other side ...
I love that run down to Canazei at around 11am, empty, perfectly groomed, shaded and cold and fast ... nobody around !!!
On the booking side ... even booking.com does not book/charger/reserve immediately (for some, most I would say ...), it still goes to "provider" who then approves charges ... unnecessary lag but it is what it is. Maybe it is some algorithm that pushes me to the US site... will try with VPN next time ... I was trying hard to use local tourist office sites (for two weeks period) but they provided least reliability and convenience ... I mostly use Orbitz/Expedia (get 10% off/back for level) and Airbnb/VRBO (not a big fan lately, bad thing imo) and my frequent flier, rental car and hotel providers for flights, rental car and stays.

No worries!
Not sure if it's the one you mean, but the black run down from Ciampac to Alba is a blast!
If you get a hang of the buses in Val di Fassa and you've had enough of the busy pistes on the Sella Ronda, you could do your second week somewhere like Pozza or Moena and use the buses to do daytrips out to the worthwhile smaller areas like Passo San Pellegrino, Latemar, Carezza, Alpe Lusia, etc
Edy's booked, flights booked ... we'll go from there
Glad it works for you, it did look great value compared to other spots!
I wouldn't leave it too long to get something for the second week, particularly if you want something near a Sella Ronda lift.
As others have said, January is no longer as slack as it once was and maybe the Olympics/Paralympics shifting bookings forward from Feb & Mar is having an effect this year too.
