@holidayloverxx, You've never traveled with Ryanair? (I only do it as a last resort)
They reduce their hand baggage allowances every year, and will do absolutely anything to get passengers to pay extra for hold luggage. |
Almost every flight I take is Ryanair. They've just increased the under seat baggage size. They havent reduced it the last x years I've been using them. Can you quote specific examples of your experience?

Gatwick’s definitely still 100ml max, we flew a couple of weeks ago. We made a mistake of an item greater than that … found by security & thrown away.

@Snow&skifan, but you (generally) don't need to empty your kit out. We passed through 10 days ago.
Geneva had (may still have) smart scanners but we usually go through fast track which is old style. And you can't guarantee that you go through the CTs, if they're even open.

According to customs last night GVA won’t get smart scanners until next year.
Also vis cabin bags one guy had his pinged at the desk for being oversize (wheels poked over the top of the Basket). On board he raised this with the cabin crew (as he was getting on so holding up boarding!) who very much sympathised as he had got on at GTW with the same case no problem, was told was non-easyJet desk staff who pinged him, and later took his details to see what they could do. Apart from a quite extended discussion as he boarded I was impressed at EJ staff feeling to was a step too far.

And bear in mind at LGW that you can’t have a half-filled 200ml container either. The container size is the determinant, not the volume of liquid in it.

@Doccam, GVA had smart scanners as of a few years ago. We haven't been through "normal" security in some time but I definitely had the impression that they'd reverted to normal security. That said, the sis-in-law is convinced they still have them ...as she makes a point of using them...

@Doccam, easyJet are fairly clear that their dimensions include wheels though, and usually you get told this at several stages of booking and before flying. Whether their sizes are fair or not is another matter, but they are very clear and getting away with it at one airport doesn't mean you have a free pass.

Re cabin bags I’ve found easyJet has an annoying process of reserving the first couple of overhead lockers ‘for front row passengers’. So that if you’re in row 3-4, preceding boarders have filled the space above you. I now book seats 5+ so my luggage doesn’t get relegated to lockers behind me.
It doesn’t even work for row 1 passengers sometimes. I’ve been on flights recently where a row 1 person has boarded a bit late and there still hasn’t been baggage space for them at the front. The whole onboard baggage thing has got a bit silly it seems to me: some of the luggage people bring on is ridiculous and way outside the size allocation.

Agreed- we’ve got bags that fit so it’s not impossible. I’m just making the point as the budget airlines get a bad rap for fleecing people for minor discretions that are often ignored - the inconsistencies are frustrating and also in this case it wasn’t EJ but GVA staff enforcing the rules.

Yes- we had front row seats (hence front row for cabin bags discussion) and our locker had been filled up by the time we got on- some disgruntlement from 2/3rd row when told they had to move their bags to accommodate ours!

A different query. I'm flying LGW-GVA on Tuesday with just the minimum under seat bag. I want to take my walking poles which come completely apart - and the 6 short bits fit into the bag OK. I couldn't find anything about walking poles - they don't come up if you search on the easyJet FAQs about baggage. But it does say that sport equipment is forbidden in the cabin. Are walking poles sports equipment? Ski boots and helmets are, but they are not prohibited.
I'd be cross if my quite expensive walking poles were confiscated by security but I don't want to have to buy a pair in France, as I already have several. They'll be very obvious in the machine when the bag goes through.

@Doccam, indeed, but no worries anyway
@LaForet, Geneva has, at least, started segregated buses for speedy boarding. But we also book row 5+ for that reason.

The reason is that front row passengers and those sitting in emergency exit rows MUST put all their baggage in the overhead lockers for take off and landing. They aren't allowed to put bags/coats/duty free "under the seat in front" - not that there is a seat infront in row 1 (other than the bog and the drivers). The overhead lockers generally don't go all the way to row 1 either, so row 1 stuff goes above row 2, row 2 above row 3 etc. You also tend to find that there is oxygen equipment around rows 5/6, and the cabin crew often put their bags somewhere up front too, meaning things don't ease off till rows 8 onwards. If row 1 bags end up 'down the back' it causes chaos at the destination as row 1 pax try to swim against the tide to collect their stuff.
If you know you've got stuff you want in the overhead lockers, the trick is to book speedy boarding, and then select a seat at row 10 or further back. There is usually a small discount for doing this(£10-£15). If you're at or going to an airport where they load/diesmbark from the rear steps, then selecting seats in the last 5 rows will often get you onboard and off before the muppets in row 1 have stopped fannying about

Out of curiosity do many people reserve seats on planes when they have to pay extra for it. I never do and have always got a seat (actually there was an exception to that when I had to sit in the spare staff jump seat for takeoff and landing and stand for the rest of the flight)

Usually not for short haul, as its…….shot haul. Who cares. And BA usually sit you next to each other, I only know of Ryanair who are gits and purposely split you up if you don’t pay for seats.
We have paid for seats on long haul as some seats are better than others and for our upcoming trip to NZ we’ll be in them for 24 hours.
I didn’t think not getting an allocated seat and standing was not allowed for safety and security reasons.

At boarding I was told my allocated seat was broken and I was given two choices: either catch the next flight the next day or sit on the jump seat. It must be safe as the crew sit on them and they have full seat belts. I had to stand to allow people access to the toilets. It was a reputable airline. The flight was not overloaded.

With EJ, if you want a large cabin bag then you have to pay for Speedy Boarding, which automatically gives you seat choice. For long haul I choose to fly with proper airlines that include seat choice in the basic price at the time of booking. So not BA.

I think the high price is partly to dissuade too many people from booking seats.
This ensures that the most lucrative passengers, booking very late, still have a good choice of seats. Some airlines actively manage their seating plans in order to ensure their best passengers get better seats – the seat availability map that you see as a blue card holder on BA, is very different to what a gold card holder sees.
I pay to book seats if I don’t get them for free. The difference between being near the front and first off, and at the back and last off, can be 60mins at passport control at some airports.

@snowdave, or at others it means you get to stand on the bus first!
More often than not I find that baggage reclaim is the critical path in flying, I rarely come out from passport control and immediately collect my bag. Of course if you don't have hold luggage it's a different matter.

At Montpellier to LGW, the desk staff assiduously process everyone in the 'right' order: those travelling with children first, then Speedy Boarding, etc. You then find that all they've done is move you into the adjacent departure hall and you're all mixed up again. Only then do you exit the departure hall to walk to the 'plane. And it's a lottery because they have two exit doors to choose from, at opposite ends. And the people in wheelchairs are back in the first hall and taken out through the exit door at the desks. On one occasion, they even walked us back to the first hall and used the exit the wheelchairs had just gone through. So there's no strategy/ticket that guarantees you will get on first.

Even when it's a bus gates, unless its a small plane there will be more than one busload. There's always going to be an edge case where it's no benefit, but on c.70 flights/yr, overall I probably save at least a day each year.
I almost never check bags. I did a week of work/conferences in the US last year, bracketed by ski weekends at the start and end, all in a cabin bag. Including ski boots.

I can get 9 sets of underwear and socks inside my ski boots (undone) then clip them closed. After that, everything is easy! Gym kit I rinse out, ski gear I recycle thermals but have two base layer tops.
5-7 days without skiing is easy- and all my colleagues are the same. Nobody checks a bag.

Oslo alone (one of my regular routes) has only 1-2 managed passport desks for the late night flight from Heathrow. 150 people, at least half Brits. You can do the maths… the last few people on the plane take over an hour to clear passport control.
