Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Liquid limits on flights

It’s quite confusing on official websites but what is the experience recently. Is 100ml max being enforced (specifically at Geneva)?

It's 100ml per item not in total. Depending on the airport security set up, liquids can be just left in your hand luggage (LPL ) or in a sealable clear plastic bag (HER).

The "max" used to be what can be held in the standard plastic bag size that they define of these 100ml containers (1 bag per passenger) , the containers must only hold a max of 100ml and not just have not more than 100ml in them. But as most airports now don't require you to take out the bag that limit seems to be moot now.

The Geneva guidance says: You may take liquids with you in hand baggage in containers with a capacity of up to 100 ml per product, in vials/bottles that also must not exceed 100 ml.

Also, all vials/bottles must be contained in a one litre transparent resealable bag (e.g. a freezer bag).

The bag must be taken out of your hand baggage before going through security screening.

Only one transparent/resealable bag is allowed per person. Capacity of the bag: 1 litre.

I checked because I'm flying to Gva next week, and with just an "under seat" bag, so won't be taking much of anything but a 1 litre freezer bag is pretty small!

"as most airports now don't require you to take out the bag"

for very small values of "most"

I'm not sure how "a small number of UK" translates as "most"?

Geneva is certainly not one of them.

At Edinburgh Airport, you can now carry liquids in containers up to two litres without needing to remove them from your bag or put them in a separate plastic bag, as the old 100ml rule has been lifted.

Clearly, some other airports have not upgraded their scanners so - while this is a welcome change when leaving Edinburgh - you always need to check limits at each airport you might pass through.

Gatwick says you don't have to take them out of the bag but says containers of over 100 ml capacity will be confiscated. So it seems that Edinburgh is an outlier.

Arrived in Paris yesterday lunchtime on an AF flight from Brazil. Took the unopened bottle of Evian from the flight. Had to scan luggage again, straight off the plane, despite transiting directly to a flight to Portugal. Was glowered at by the officer and told to throw the water away.
Not sure if it’s a senseless waste or a French ruse to boost Evian sales…

100ml is the limit per item, up to a total of 1 litre.
No idea about plastic bag, etc. as I dont take liquids. I just buy stuff at the destination I need.

It depends on the airport and what security equipment they have. For example at Birmingham airport the following rules apply:

Only liquids, pastes and gels in containers no more than 2 litres (2L) can be carried in hand luggage – anything larger needs to be in checked in luggage.

No liquids above this size.

Anything above the 2L limit will be removed and destroyed.

There is no limit on the number of 2L containers that can be carried.

Containers such as insulated bottles, are permitted but need to be completely empty.

Do not put your liquids, pastes and gels into plastic bags (please leave them loose in hand luggage).

Do not take them out of your hand luggage when you're in the security search area.

Leave all electricals in hand luggage during the security search.

When going through security please ensure all items are out of pockets including phones, keys, coins and tissues etc. Watches can be left on.

So basically visit the airport website and check

Last time I was at Geneva (3 seasons ago) I was diverted through fast track and I didn’t have to take anything out, in fact, I was also told to leave my ski jacket on.

I think some of the scanners in Manchester T2 are upgraded but they seem to have a baggage policy that reflects the lowest common denominator in equipment.

@Doccam, Geneva are still enforcing the 100ml rule in a clear bag as of Sunday.
They do have a couple of the new style scanners where you don’t need to take electronics and liquids out.

For Geneva in the main terminal most the scanners are still the old school ones where you take everything out, but there is a room to the right where there are two new scanners where you don't. However there is still the 100ml per item limit in a 1 litre max bag

I think Bristol also has new scanners which allows 2 litres. Flew from there in April and was so much easier not having to take everything out the bag or remove watches etc.

Interesting about watches. Flew from Liverpool a couple of weeks ago and had to remove watch and belt and empty pockets. They do have the new scanners operating.

Practically every light I've taken n the last 2 years has been a new CT scanner.
I did have 1 flight this year, where I was surprised to have a ye olde scanner and had to take laptop out.
Might have been Frankfurt or Glasgow. I forget which. But must have just been a busy day or something.

First time I used a new scanner was London City. They had to employ 2x as many staff to make sure people put all their stuff back in their bags despite being already told to keep stuff in bag/jacket.

Never had an issue with a watch. Polar HRM sports watch thing. Just wear it and get scanned.

A report I saw a few months ago suggested that many of the smaller airports were ready, but the larger ones were lagging behind schedule.

At LHR T5 last year, they were in the process of installing them. Had a bit of banter with security about the delays.
Hoping they are ready for this season.

Or course, it depends on the scanners at your return airport as well. So you may be able to take a bottle of wine out, but not bring one back.

Just had a friend go through EMA yesterday. Just asked him Ryanair policy. Will update when I get a reply.

Which is surely what everyone has to do - both airports and passengers. Until new scanners are rolled out more widely, either just assume that the 100ml limit still applies, or be happy to throw larger quantities away.. You never know when your return flight will be diverted to depart from a different airport.

Not convinced by the Birmingham advice not to put stuff like small bottles of shampoo into a plastic bag. Having once had a bottle leak during a flight I always put any such bottle into a plastic bag, irrespective of security.

@Origen, I think it is genuinely random, but there may be some weighting to some types of footware, for example hiking boots. Richard Reid acutally got on the plane with explosives in his shoes.

Shouldn’t be, they always seem to scan boots defined as footwear going over the ankle. Not sure why boots are any more risky than normal shoes as both can have large heels into which things can be secreted but I guess boots can have hidden wires to switches/power packs etc..

I think the boots thing isn't about what could be hidden, it's that boots are more likely to set off the metal detectors (or give an adverse warning on the T-wave scanners) due to metal/buckles/shanks.

Rather than having X% of people trigger an alarm and need secondary screening (or have to go back and remove footwear etc.) which slows down processing a lot each time, it's easier and quicker to ask everyone to remove their shoes and eliminate that source of false positives. It's not so much a security policy as a commercial decision to drive greater throughput.

Confirmation of EMA. Still limited to 100ml, but no need to take out of luggage, which presumably means they have the new scanners, but Ryanair probably still limiting to keep the weight down.

GVA have both old and new scanners where you keep everything in the bag. The new one are found in a separate room to the right of the snakes for the old scanners. Turn right after going showing boarding pass and walk straight ahead.

They reduce their hand baggage allowances every year, and will do absolutely anything to get passengers to pay extra for hold luggage.

Ok great. Mrs Doccam took her 1l water bottle without the need to empty at GTW - was in fact positively told no need to. She has some spenny French potions over 100ml to take back thinking will be ok at GVA but clearly not. She will have to leave them here. Thanks all.

Easyjet now charge (a lot) extra for a cabin bag bigger than will go under the seat in front. It costs almost the same as a big bag stowed in the hold. I'm all in favour of that - people have been carrying idiotic amounts of stuff on board and taking forever to stow it all away. I'm flying to Gva next week and just have the "free" under seat bag. It's a good discipline. I shall wear my heavy walking boots! I'm only there for four nights. But if I needed more I'd pay for a hold bag and stroll through security with just a small handbag and a rolled up copy of the Financial Times.

Definitely not >100ml allowed at GVA this evening. Lots of people having stuff confiscated thinking it was ok now.
However EES registration in full flow. Small queue at “autres passports” desk but Mrs Doccam processed in about 2mins once she got to the front. Swiss had all booths manned so maximum efficiency. Result getting that sorted before Xmas scrum!

@Origen, Dunno why these airlines dont design cabin baggage to fit the bins. Would be easy to do a modular clip in design.
It is the randomness that annoys me. People getting stopped with soft bags, while hardshells which are visually bigger than what is allowed are ignored. Plus they tend to be odd shapes

Well as I've ranted on here before I'd charge everyone for every kg they took on board (so it wouldn't help me to wear my walking boots!). It is definitely random. Some people seem to get away with running coaches and horses through the rules.

@Origen, indeed. I've had arguments at checkin being 1 kg overweight on my bag when the person behind me was at least 40kg heavier than me. It should be weight of passenger and luggage.

On a recent flight I did notice that the overhead luggage racks were deeper than normal and we were told to put our bags in sideways.

Oh, when the overhead lockers are included in the ticket price I always make a point of making sure I have a carryon bag too big to go under the seat in front. I prefer to use that space for my legs.

yes, that makes sense, but with easyjet that sort of carry on bag now costs a lot extra - far more than my fare LGW-GVA.

My recent holiday flight with Virgin had me buying two new hand luggage cases as VA need the slightly smaller size. Imagine my joy on being one of the later boarders that the bins were full of bags nearly as big as hold luggage Very Happy They made space for the Mrs' case (well one of them) as it had all her medical stuff in which may have been needed for the flight. Her normal one was somewhere and mine ended up in 1st snowHead
