 Poster: A snowHead
|
Husband is planning a 4 day trip to Sun Valley in Jan and then 11 days with the kids & me in Zermatt in April.
Am I right in thinking an Ikon pass is a no brainer? 4 days in Sun Valley is 1000USD for starters. Anyone know how the Cervinia bit will work (I saw at Zermatt you have to get your pass at the office, not use ikon on the mountain so I am wondering how that will work if crossing over via the link).
Is it important to buy an ikon pass fairly promptly (ie do they sell out?)
Thanks so much, we have each only ever bought what we needed in the past for passes, so any advice welcome.

They stop selling Ikon passes usually around Thanksgiving. They will give you a local pass card at the ticket office in Zermatt. The only thing you'll have to check specifically is whether Italy is included in the pass.
A few years ago I asked whether it was valid for people staying in Cervinia and after an initial false yes from Ikon found out it wasn't. I think it was first uplift must be CH but it might have been more restrictive.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@Dave of the Marmottes, thanks so much. Cervinia is included this year (a full 7 days) but skiing in both will cost a day from both allocations. The thanksgiving tip is incredibly useful to know, thank you.

Last year at Zermatt - show Ikon pass at base office (I hadn’t actually initialised mine at the time but could show purchase of season pass on app) and they give you Zermatt pass for the number of days you want (up to 7 days). Cervinia would have required purchase of International pass, but never tested due to weather.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Wonder how it works on the Italian side now? Does the Ikon pass itself scan in the Cervinia system or is there a pass office at the "Zermatt border"? If not you've a long trip down before you ski freely both sides.

They’ll have it worked out. I was quietly dreading the Day 1 conversation at Zermatt given I didn’t have a physical Ikon pass to hand and the Zermatt website did its very best to hide the Ikon availability (may have changed, i haven’t looked). Turned out to be a total non-event and I completed the whole thing in about two minutes.

Found this on Ikon website deep in FAQs:
What access do I get at Valle d'Aosta?
Ikon Pass holders will receive seven- or five-day access combined at five of Valle d’Aosta’s mountains – Cervino Ski Paradise, Courmayeur Mont Blanc, La Thuile - Espace San Bernardo, Monterosa Ski, and Pila - from November 1 - May 31, depending on the official opening date. As of winter 25/26, you may access Valle d’Aosta’s Cervinia Ski Paradise in Italy with your Ikon Pass from Zermatt in Switzerland. Please note, Cervino Ski Paradise and Zermatt are separate Ikon Pass destinations. One day of access will be deducted from both Valle d’Aosta and Zermatt should you cross the border on the same ski day with your Ikon Pass. Please visit Valle d’Aosta to plan your trip.
We aren’t going until April so I suspect other snowheads will be able to report back before then.
It seems that with 4 days in Sun valley planned end of Jan, at over usd 1000 for the trip, the pass is definitely worth it for my husband.

The suggestion is definitely that this year ikon will work directly at the lifts but I agree best to wait and see for the real life reports! At one point I was fearing it would be a trip all the way down in Cervinia after crossing to pick up a pass at the lift office but that does sound like madness… let’s see!
