Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Autrian trains to Ischgl - booking open but timetable seems incomplete

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I've been keeping an eye out on the OBB website to see when the train tickets are being released and it seems they have been now, but the timetable looks incomplete. Specifically I'm looking at Zurich Airport to Landeck-Zams (for Ischgl), and when searching that route the options seem quite limited compared to pre-13 Dec, and there are no options with swiss trains (whereas the best route available on days before 13 Dec is an SBB train from the airport to Zurich HB, and then the OBB train).

When looking at booking just from Zurich HB to Landeck though it also looks like some of the trains have already sold out of the Sparschiene tickets, as only the flexible ones are available.

So what's going on and what should I do here? Will Sparschiene tickets from the airport to Landeck become available in the next few days/weeks? Or will waiting mean the prices go up more? Do the Sparschiene tickets on these routes sell out very quickly during ski season?

@zaphod424, when I search that route in January on https://www.oebb.at/en , there is a notice at the top of the search results page that says:

oebb.at wrote:
Information on your trains and transports
Zürich Flughafen - Landeck-Zams Bahnhofinformation
Timetable 2025/2026
Feldkirch Bahnhof - Kittsee Staatsgrenze (Grenzübergang)
Please note that the planning for local, regional and long-distance passenger rail services for the 2026 timetable year (as of 14th December 2025) has not yet been completed and the timetable data is not yet complete.

It is therefore possible that local, regional and long-distance connections will be changed or cancelled at the time of the timetable change, that additional services may be added to the timetable or that the departure or arrival times may still change.

This particularly affects the long-distance services listed below:

We thus ask you to review the current timetable of your connection in due time before starting your journey. Thank you very much.

This suggests you might just need to wait a bit.

Yeah I saw that, but was just concerned that the dicounted tickets seem to be selling out quickly, so wondered whether it would be better to wait in the hope that there are more Sparschiene tickets added in due course or book one of the currently available tickets?

BTW, there do seem to be some Sparscheine tickets, but they are at less desirable times. This is normal – if you want a popular service, you will often pay more. You can also buy the tickets from the Swiss SBB, but they usually cost more. It may be worth comparing though.

I'd probably book. The price tends to only go up, though it will cap out at the standard day rate, whatever that is. If you go through the process, you should eventually see how many seats are left which will give an indication of how popular it is.

I think you will find that the tickets post the timetable change become available on 15.10 latest ie two months before. The trains from Zürich HB (they start there) to Landeck have been the same for years ie every two hours at 15 minutes past. It is also possible to get a train to Bregenz and change there though no idea how long the wait is (again the trains from Bregenz to Landeck run every two hours). If you are worried about missing out on a cheap ticket book from HB and then buy a ticket from the Airport to HB its only a few CHF. Best place to book is on the website linked above or the app. Practically all the trains are Austrian railways. Make sure you reserve a seat, the trains are always full. There are now also a few Westbahn trains which run from Bregenz, I dont believe you can book these through SBB / OEBB but it might be possible to get a SBB train to Bregenz and then onward on the Westbahn one https://westbahn.at/.

Yeah the Bregenz route has about an hour's wait, which isn't ideal but isn't terrible either. Though that route does involve DB which is always a risk

@zaphod424, DB not involved, the trains to Munich are all Swiss. Personally would suggest the route from Zürich HB is more reliable, also easier with seats as train starts from there, when the train is busy folk have a habit of ignoring reserved seats which causes grief. Better to get on at the starting point.

The Bregenz route shows as being Intercity Express 219, which is DB no? Though if SBB haven't released their tickets then those services won't be showing yet, it looks like there's only 1 ICE per day.

@zaphod424, There is a direct train every two hours from Zürich to Munich which goes via the airport and Bregenz. I thought they were all operated by SBB but maybe there is the occasional ICE. I suspect the tickets will only be available after 15.10,

@munich_irish, @zaphod424, there is usually a daily ICE from somewhere further north in Germany (Düsseldorf? Or similar - but not important here) to Innsbruck, via Bregenz. I presume this is what zaphod is talking about as a possible connection. I’d expect it to be extremely busy and would definitely want to book seats on it.

@Inboard, Maybe, I thought that train was Saturday only. I know there is a seasonal one from Munich but runs on Saturdays only which I have never used as am skiing on a saturday!

 You know it makes sense.
You know it makes sense.
Yes, it says it comes from Dortmund, and yes it's a Saturday that we're travelling so that explains that. In the end I've just booked the Spartschiene tickets that were available from Zurich HB to Landeck, and we'll just have to get a separate SBB ticket for the journey from the airport to HB when we get there (which is 7CHF I beleive). Bit annoying though that the Swiss don't release their tickets at the same time as the Austrians, makes this all much more complicated than it needs to be. Thanks for the help though
