 Poster: A snowHead

Hi fellow boarders.
Anyone been to the gnar but gnice?
My missus and me are planing to go. And I see there is much off piste to be had.
I’ve only done off piste runs from lifts before and wondered if any of you splitboard further into the backcountry..?
I normally rent kit when in the alps. I’ve got a board from the last millennium I’ve taken to Scotland..
What kit is essential for the gnar in Gressoney..? And what kit to make the best of the trip. Should I be considering a splitboard? Looking second hand..
Skill wise I‘ve exchanged my snowboard for a surfboard/Skate Board since I’ve left Austria (30years ago) and came to the uk. Overall not all that much snow days but woukd throw myself down most things.. not massive jumps though more into carving/surfing the snow.
Btw I don’t get to see snow often as I live in the south of this Island..
and my missus skis on piste.. but very well..
Thanks for yr input

Hi @Captain Sideways,
I've only done the GnarliBuG once (2024, trip before last, when we lost half the week due to there being *too much snow* ) but from my limited experience you don't need to split board, there is lots of lift-served off piste. The high peak is served by a cable car.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Hi @tomj. Thanks.
I was under the impression you needed to get to places after the cable car to indren…
Maybe you can hike it?
Also transponder etc… no one had those back in the day when I was going off piste..

This is just general advice not specific to GnarliBuG

Most people will expect you to have transceiver, shovel, and probe if wanting to join them for off piste. Of course you should also know how to use it all else it's rather useless.
My usual suggestion for would be split boarders is to rent first, especially if just planning the odd day. Also it is worth considering snow shoes - for someone with no experience of split boarding they can even be a little quicker (no transition faffing)

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@Captain Sideways,
Yes, sorry I was being dense and didn't think beyond your question about a split board. You are going off piste, you should have a transceiver, shovel and probe - and know how to use them. I think that is set out in the Bash details.

Nothing about kit in the description of the linked page (last years)

@Captain Sideways, I believe it's possible to rent transceiver/shovel/probe/backpack locally. someone else should be able to confirm (I've not done it).
