I know that many on here spend the occasional night in Venice when travelling to/from the dolomites. Do you have any recommendations for good quality restaurants?
We will be fairly central, close to St Mark's. Not looking for anything mega-expensive but good quality authentic cuisine.
TIA

This is supposed to be really good, the Trattoria al Gatto Nero (Black Cat Restaurant) but its on Burano. Its been on a few tv shows. Booking most essential, we couldn’t get one.

Al Gobbo di Rialto & La Porta d'Acqua were the 2 we ate dinner at and both were lovely. The food was wonderful at the former but the scenery superb at the latter.

We ate at two places on our overnight. Da Mamo at lunchtime, and Trattoria alla Madonna in the evening. Both close to Rialto bridge and St Mark's, but far enough away not to be tourist traps. We went back to Da Mamo for an early lunch before departing for the airport and spent far too long there,. Both served excellent Venetian food, no pizza in sight.
EDIT-Da Mamo does seem to be a pizzeria these days, it was a while ago, and the food was excellent.

I am getting too old to try to remember names of places but in the last few years I've had some of the best meals (dinner) in San Polo area. "Less touristy" than San Marco, bit cheaper, quieter at night ...
I always look for good "Fegato alla Veneziana", house wine and amaro

We love this osteria - the vitello tonnato, the freshly-made pasta piati and the wine list are excellent. Staff are lovely and the place is always buzzing with locals.

@franga, always a good sign if the locals eat there, it's bound to be good and reasonably priced rather than a tourist trap.

I’ve just looked at their menu, the veal dish lists Anglesey sea salt as one of the ingredients. Their salt is great and they have done a brilliant job at marketing themselves, I saw Pipers Anglesey Sea Salt Crisps in VCE airports last year.

Can you get main meals there or is it just snacks to go with the wine (both good options!)?

@DCG, you can get meals there.
One half of the place (right hand side) is a a wine shop and the left is a small restaurant.
Where are you staying? I know a couple of places near the fish market

I'm staying on for a night after the BB and my wife is coming out to meet me. Can anyone suggest a 'reasonable' hotel in Venice?
I know, Venice is unlikely to be 'reasonable' price-wise at any time, so first night of Carnival will be even more so! But still, recommendations are very welcome!

Though I have not stayed there I have always liked the look of the Pensione Accademia, we looked in this year (planning a big family trip which I might have to pay) and it looks good with a lovely garden with views to the Grand Canal. We tend to stay in the Hotel Monaco and Grand Canal, fantastic position close to the Piazza San Marco, has a terrace onto the Grand Canal and a good restaurant, not cheap but by no means the most expensive.
IMO the best (and by no means ridiculously expensive) restaurant in Venice, if you are not al fresco dining, is Osteria alle Testiere http://www.osterialletestiere.it/ about 5 minutes walk from San Marco, if you include al fresco then Al Gatto Nero on Burano is our go to (as recommended by a previous poster), you can eat inside, and the food (mainly fish) is excellent, but it is lovely to sit by the canal, consider shelling out for a water Taxi for the full experience, cheaper pp if you are in a group!
If you need a water taxi, Isacco is a top guy with a gorgeous boat www.topclassvenice.com

A somewhat delayed trip report!
We didn't make reservations on the first night (due to uncertainty with flight arrival time) but just wandered out and found a real gem - the Rosticceria Gislon - close to Rialto on the San Marco side. A basic cafe style decor with formica tables etc but great seafood and wine fro the barrel quite cheaply. No apparent booking. We managed to get seats but I suspect that might be a challenge at times - maybe best to visit off-peak. We went back for lunch later in the week and had another great meal.
Have previously posted about our second night at the Vineria all’Amarone. Best of the week. Really great place.
Our third night was at Al Gobbo di Rialto (Thanks, @Gainz, ) which was also excellent. A larger place but not over-crowded when we visited. Good food and service and reasonable prices.
Last night was at Osteria San Marco, a definite step up in sophistication and price but quite convenient for where we were staying. Again great food (Thanks @franga, )
On each occasion it was apparent that it was essential to book (apart from Gislon where you couldn't) and certainly in the case of Vineria all’Amarone from over-hearing them on the phone it appeared that you needed to book a week or two in advance.

We stayed here for 1 night after a birthday bash. I'm not normally a booking.com fan, but it did have the best price. It's on the Grand Canal, and we had the best room, with the best view at a bargain price. https://www.sancassiano.it/en/ Hotel San Cassiano .

I can second Hells Bells recommendation of the Hotel San Cassiano. If you're meeting your wife at Marco Polo airport then you can arrive in style in Venice by boat, Alilaguna water bus
The Alilaguna service website states it has room for one suitcase and one carry on bag, so if you've got more bags e.g skis you can leave them in the airport left luggage facility operated by Trasbagagli
Note the Hotel Cassiano website FAQs states "From Venice Marco Polo airport you can reach the hotel by water taxi to our private dock, or take the Alilaguna shuttle Arancio (orange) line to the San Stae stop. The hotel is a five-minute walk from the landing stage."
Enjoy your stay in Venice!

Thanks so much for the tip, @Hells Bells, and @Alastair Pink.
I had a look at the San Cassiano and it seems to hit the spot for what I'm looking for. Booked.

Osteria Da Bubi was excellent last week. Traditional Italian.
Al Timon for a shared steak was excelent, meat is rare if you don't specify and sold by weight, so not ideal on a budget, steak was 100 Euros for two.
Osteria Enoteca San Marco was very good, up market Italian food. Lamb was amazing.

I'm just reading this now but I also recommend the San Cassiano - I stayed there a couple of nights in January this year before flying home. Great location with half the fun walking through the narrow alleys at night to get there. Winter prices really reasonable, and if you rug up you can sit on the small balcony overlooking the Grand Canal if you get to breakfast early and nab the spot.
