I had just read that, and to be honest they seem much more optimistic about the future of glaciers than I feel. I have been visiting the Alps, summer and winter since 1972, and the disappearance, or extreme retreat of many glaciers is shocking.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@RobinS, can only agree. Was up on the Hintertux glacier two years ago. First visit since 2001. Shocked to see that the 'Gefrorene Wand' is just a rock face now. Was full glacier, crevasses and all, back then. Also the glacier used to extend down to the Tuxerfernerhaus and even past that to the Spannagelhaus... not even close any more. Truly sad. As for the Zugspitze, well they hardly bother calling them glaciers any more.

I remember visiting the Rhone Glacier in about 1982 (I was 12 and I can still remember the burning clutch smell our Maxi HLS made towing the caravan up there!) and it was a 5 min walk to the ice cave from the car park. According to the article it’s now a 30 min walk!
The Presena glacier was quite big when I first visited it in 2007 but then rapidly shrunk over the next few years. They seem to have slowed or even halted its shrinking in recent years by covering it up in the summer. There is an article on the internet somewhere with there predictions for how long they think they can keep skiing on it.
It’s sad but there’s nothing we can do to stop it. The little tweaks we are making to the way we live aren’t going to be enough, massive lifestyle changes will be needed to stop serious global warming now.

My first ever trip to Mer de Glace two weeks ago. The loss of ice since 1990 or even 2000, compared to 1825 to 1990 was astonishing. Similarly with the stunning Glacier des Bossons ... I visited it in August 1981, when it was just 150m above valley bottom altitude, a short stroll from the road tunnel entrance. Now receding apace.

What can we do as tiny cogs in the wheel? Just the best we can, although most of us are hypocrites to an extent e.g. we flew to Geneva.

Ugly things. Make the summer slopes untidy.
