Hi I’m new to this forum, a very experienced skier, meaning I’m an expert but now am old. I’ve skied on Rossignol GS skis for over 30 years but now want to drop down one level to have a pair that allow longer turns but still with good grip on harder snow. What can you (politely) suggest please in the Rossignol range? (Preferably last 5 years models but not necessarily new). Thank you.

@Lesnarcisses, Welcome to Snowheads. It might help if you mention which specific rossignol GS Skis you are currently on (e.g. The Hero range, has FIS, Athlete, Elite, Masters options I think)

Hi Thank you for the questions, I’m male, 5’8” and used Rossignol World Cup GS skis in the past. They are too grown up for me now but I am looking for something softer but still harder than the Scratch which were brilliant for all mountain soft conditions. Any ideas please? Thanks

Well,if you're on the WC skis I'm guessing they are something like a 30m radius.
If you still want a GS stye ski you might want to look at something like the Dynastar masters GS - there is be a Rossi version of this ski (it's just a different topsheet), but I can't remember offhand what it is. Its a good fun ski if you like making those kinds of turns, but it's a bit softer than the FIS version and has a shorter radius. There are options available with either the Konnect system binding or with R22 plate plus binding (The SPX 15 is the better binding compared to the SPX12, but heavier and only goes down to DIN 7). I've definitely seen folks selling these on here/ ebay/ facebook.

Thank you for your reply. We are getting there. I need the name of the Rossignol ski that is one step down from the GS racing skis please. I’m 63 years old and need a gentler ski but certainly not a soft one. Thanks again.

The questions by @snowheid are all very relevant and in order to get close to a decent recommendation, really need answered in full.
Weight: Is much more relevant than height
Age/Fitness - Need not be exact, but could have a significant bearing on any suggestions
Terrain - Piste only, or a mixture. If a mixture, percentage of time Off Piste. If enjoy Moguls, that also has a bearing.
Turn Type/Ski Radius - Short (11m-13m); Long (18m - 22m); Versatile (14m - 16m)
Aggression - How fast do you currently like to ski
Are you happy to consider brands other than Rossignol?

I *think* the Rossi HERO MASTER LT is the one I'm thinking of that is the same as the Dynastar Masters GS. But don't get hung up on the brand name. The Dynastar and Rossi race skis are *exactly the same skis* just with different graphics/ naming. If you're looking for a bargain (especially old stock or second hand) it's worth looking out for both the Dynastar and Rossi branded versions.
What does make a difference is whether you go for the system binding (konnect) or the R22 plate + SPX12/15. Personally, I think the R22 plate makes a real difference to the feel of the ski, and if you're used to this on the WC skis you probably will find the konnect leaves you a bit flat.

If you simply want to replace what you have, with something similar but a bit easier (which is probably what you do), I think @Tubaski has given the likely best option. As he has said, it can be bought with, or without the race plate. Like he also said, I suspect you would prefer the extra precision of the R22 plate.

I was just checking that you definitely wanted to remain with a Race Ski, rather than something a little more versatile, with a slightly shorter turn radius....all of which can make for an easier life. In other words, a lot has changed over 30 years and it might be worth checking out what is currently available, before going for something similar.

I have the Rossignol Masters LT in 173cm and the radius is said to be 17m. If like me you are getting on a bit you may no longer do v short turns, but these will do as short as you comfortably can, and are also good at medium turns. I got these last year, been on them for a lot of days, something like this really sounds like what would suit you. I have the SPX12. The ski is excellent, best I have had for a long time. I am 174cms, 81kg, my skiing pal is more like 180 and 90 kg, he has tried them with no problems he said. I think there is a longer length if you are a beast.

I'm currently considering upgrading my slalom skis to the Rossignol Hero Athlete FIS SL at 167cm.
What other alternatives might there be out there for me to consider at this level of slalom ski?
Grateful for any suggestions.

The Dynastar and Rossignol are more than basically the same, they are the same ski except for the topsheet, as far as I understand.
I've got the Dynastar version in the 157 (as I use if for fridge racing, so most go for the ladies length) it's fab. Can highly recommend upgrading to the SPX15 binding too (unless the min DIN of 7 is too high for you...), it's so much more solid than the 12.
That said, if you're looking for something to ski all day on, rather than just race, the Masters version is also superb.

Hi, thank you both for your answers (and questions).
I also put the question out to a few ski retailers I talk to occasionally and have just been offered AND BOUGHT a pair of ex-test Rossignol Hero Master 13 ST R22 2024 @165 with bindings and mint bases for just under €300 delivered to Le Taos for the start of the PSB.
I was going to do more research but felt that the offer was too good to miss so I grabbed it.
I'll give them a blast during the PSB/PiPAU and if they are not perfect I might hire some test skis locally as a trial and flip them on.
It's a bizarre feeling, but I'm already tingling in anticipation of carving them at the PSB. Normally I spend 90+% of my time off piste on altogether different kit, but due to snow conditions and different people I was skiing with last season I spent about 5 weeks solely on-piste on my old slalom skis. I probably skied more on them last season than the previous 10 seasons combined. Problem was that when the going got tough (steep blacks at speed) they just weren't holding the edge I wanted no matter how I adapted my skiing so I reckon they are just getting a bit long in the tooth to ski aggressively now.
OK, they're not new, but it's amazing that I can pick up a pair of skis with bindings for little more than the cost of two weeks parking at Le Taos.
Thanks again for your help.

It was from Ski d'occasion/ Ski d'Oc. They are based in France hence the name which means second-hand.
I've used them for years and I particularly like their ex-test skis which they buy up after the summer testing from the previous year. They have a strong affiliation with rossignol but also sell many other brands.
If you buy something they will post it within the EU for free but it's quite expensive for the UK so I always have them sent directly to wherever I'm going skiing.
If you want the email of the owner who speaks excellent English just dropped me a direct message. I basically sent him I starting post above and he responded with the skis I bought in about five minutes.

Could anyone tell me the difference in skiing a FIS SL vs the Master ST. Junior would like a set of skis for occasional carving on this winter and was always a fan of Rossignol's. Also is there much difference between the 165 and 157, is it just length or are the longer skis noticeably stiffer?

@doddsie, The two lengths of FIS ski are designed for different weight ranges, how heavy is your kid?

58kgs, but strong. Having said that he's very dynamic and likes to bend the ski and get lots of rebound.

@doddsie, based on those CARV scores, I'd go full 165 FIS if I were you/him.

@swskier - Perhaps, but when we were in Zermatt last year he borrowed a pair of Stockli Laser SL from the test centre at the top of the mountain and hated them. He just found found them too stiff, which I'm also concerned about with the 165 FIS.

@doddsie, I would suggest the 157 for that weight, most manufacturer's race catalogues have a table of recommended lengths for skier weight ranges.

Yes I'm leaning towards the 157 as well, so decision made, thanks guys. swskier, we'll find out if they work at Christmas, I'll update the CARV thread.

I have the 157 FIS dynastars and an older r20 plate rossi st ti racing in a 167, the ST has more rocker. Not much in terms of how much actually rises, but if pushed flat the 167 st has the same amount of contact with the surface as the 157 fis ski. Given how little it actually rises compared to the rocker on some all mountain skis I doubt it will have much impact on anything other than ice or dryslope. On the rossi chart the upper limit for the u16 pre fis 150cm is 54kg so the 157 is right for 58kg according to that chart if you are disregarding the FIS category rules for age.
