Is SC a good bet for first week of April (vs other resorts, not vs other times of year)? Based on what's normally snow sure and has freestyle park, internet says yes. But this proper on the ground information suggests its a bit warm (although people having fun)?

@zombie, think you have to ask some more questions or explain more what you're after, as SC is very different to the high altitude ski factories of Tignes / ADH etc, and are you a skier or boarder etc
By April, there is not much of a young social scene, and I'm not too sure if there's one on the hill in the snow-park by then, though the snow-park will still be in excellent condition.
Temps were on the chilly side this morning and walking to the Aravet for lunch, but now the sun is out and it's positivley warm on the terrace, though I've been in the garage servicing skis.
Off back to the vets to get Beanie after her op, anyone want to hazard a guess as to the bill?
One initial consultation and anti-biotics.
Then Op today under anaesthetic to remove tooth and clean teeth, plus examine and clean ears, though I think her loss of hearing now is down to her old age, but would be great if it was down to blocked ears!
Still a fair bit of discrepency as to the forecasts for the weekend's snow or not

@Weathercam, that would be around £500+ in UK, but that is for a GSD.
@Hells Bells, £320, which was a wee bit steeper than I thought it would be, but their costs have been going up since they're now part of a bigger group, but still cheaper than the UK!

However, it is March, and temps will quickly rise after the cold snap with that snow quickly getting very heavy below 2,200m, so great for topping up the pistes and filling in tracks on S facing touring slopes and hopefully decent cold snow at altitude, though viz will be the issue above the treeline, whilst in the trees could quickly turn to cement, that's Spring!!
Hopefully not too much of an issue for the Lautaret as the tarmac is now warm and the fresh snow will quickly disappear.
Plus could all still change in the next couple of days!
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@Weathercam, we skipped the skiing today, as we had to look for a new garden table, buy some stuff, and do some jobs. All done apart from the table, so back out tomorrow I think. We had a longer day yesterday, and I really felt it. Need more of them I think. Good news about the potential top up at the weekend.
Very overcast in front of us and can just about make out the Cote Chevalier chair, and looking at the Cucumelle webcam looks like more of the same.
That said I'm nipping up up the Lautaret as that doesn't look too bad as some Swedies have talked me into it, but no Ullr as I think we'll be on the Combeynot side.
So you couldn't really make it up now, the way Saturday is looking, as not just the snow, but the cold temps as well, so snow should be powder even lower down, still a little too early in my book just yet though.
Then you can post your own questions or snow reports...

I went out for a bit of a slide in Montgenevre today. A few cams of fresh up at the top, just enough to get a few turns off the sides. Spring sugar pistes down below into the resort. Looking forward to some snow over the weekend and a planned trip over the Lauteret on Monday.

@rogg, this was up from the Lauaret yesterday
The lottery of cloud played in our favour this time round.
Back up there shortly but on the other side, though looks a little breezy?
Saturday, still looking bonkers !!!!

So the forecast has not produced the accumulations that all the various models predicted, which were all well into double figures for the valley, and temperatures not at all below zero, and the earlier snow is quickly thawing.
So I've not been up the hill as the weather is distinctly grim, but as ever I'm being very fussy, plus we had quite a traumatic day yesterday, with a good mate breaking a leg and requiring a heli evac as we were way off-piste en route to Chambran.
After the heli, we carried on all the way down to Pelvoux, where we had left a van first thing in the morning.
This is the moment the heli landed, dropping off the paramedics very close to us forcing my OH and mate to drop to their knees.
We'll put together some words and video as quite a few tips & lessons to be learnt, though as a team we did manage well, not least as I've had first-hand experience before.
And the day before, had a truly glorious ski tour up from the Lautaret to one of my favourite locations, where we scored cold snow and Ullr on fire going straight down the fall-line as I've never seen him before!
And then we finished up with Spring snow for the last pitch.
@Weathercam, been grim up here too, although my skiing has been curtailed by an argument with a pothole on the way back (sober) from the village on Thursday evening. Pistes only in any case, so I'm sure I'll be back out tomorrow or Monday. I really hope your mate is OK. It is quite a sobering experience having such an emergency to deal with, and it most definitely traumatic for all concerned.
And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.
And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.
I didn't bother skiing in the snow on Saturday, and then yesterday opted for XC, which was not the best of moves as snow was too soft and the wind was a real PITA.
By all accounts, it was a classic case of the early bird got the warm, as by 10:30 it was getting heavy off-piste, and my OH and daughter went up around then!
Today I was thinking about going up to the Lautaret but a friend mentioned that Yret was not open yesterday and so I beetled up to park at Monetier and was one of the first over into Montagnolle, which I have not done for a long while, as I'll only go if there's a chance of reasonable untracked.
A group had been down already, and as you can see, they kept their tracks incredibly tight, which made me think were they pisteurs?
And then they kept even tighter lower down and did not even ski some of the better lines?
On my fussometer the snow was a tad heavy and windblown, hardly surprising given the strong winds of yesterday and indeed it was way better than I expected, but I did wish I was on my heavier downhill kit.
Anyway, going over that early meant that lower down on the flat where the little trees are was icy crust (gets way more sun) and not at all pleasant, and I took a big hit trying to slow down, catching an edge, and that was all before the run-out from hell, which was uber technical and icy, and skiing in lightweight touring gear was not ideal.
By the time I made it back down, I'd already decided to go back and do it again, this time was far more tracked out though I couldn't see anyone else, and indeed i didn't see anyone the whole run; and there was plenty of untracked if you knew where to go
And the flat at the bottom and the run-out was way better as things had warmed up a little, plus the crust had been tracked more.
Then it was a coffee at SNO and order my new downhill boots, a first in nigh on 15 years!!
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much
Quite a few heading down Montagnole this morning without any avvy gear, and a solo skier on Neyzets with no equipment who had fallen and lost a ski . It is quite a way out of there on your own on one leg.
You know it makes sense.
You know it makes sense.
I spent yesterday in the trees around Monty, great fun.
Today was due to be a splitboard day, but the group diverted to La Grave. My first time there. OMG it’s like Disneyland for snowboarders. Banana couloir to start and then a couple of laps of the other side. It was such fun, a little tracked in places but also our local ‘guide frond us some good stuff
Otherwise you'll just go on seeing the one name:

@rogg, how did you get on with the traverses back to P1 ?
They're almost masochistically enjoyable
@Hells Bells, and last evening I was with someone who admitted he skied Neyzets without gear that day, but he does know his stuff, and he skied it circa 11:30 when it was well tracked out, but still knows that he was not a good example to others etc
So based on the forecast for today had already decided on a Dayoffski as knee is complaining, however first thing the weather was stunning, but we saw the cloud build up behind the Prorel along with the wind kicking in and within the hour indoors and later chores and shopping was the better option.
Yesterday I went investigating up the Granon with the Gardiole as my objective.
Left van at Villard Late and out with the e-mtb, and I climbed past Le Tronchets and left the bike at circa 1,900m.
It's going to be a long while before we can drive up there as in places there is still so much snow.
Once on the skins and climbing up it became obvious that the wind had badly affected the whole sector, and it's going to take a week or so of freeze melt to smooth things out or some more snow and no wind.
Atop the Gardiole took the usual photos and the snow had totally filled it in.
Best line was off the back on the almost E'ly face before cutting back and traversing, and then it was a question of trying to find the best snow, which was a mixture of wind-blown and frozen spring, which gradually loosened up lower down.
So not the best of sorties up there, and made worse by the ride back down in the deep melted snow, which took longer than going up.
The best options now are to wait for a more intense freeze melt or just suck it up, though I was amazed at how many people had skied up there already, as it's a long climb to get to decent skiing, as it was i did 900m after riding the bike up for 28mins!

The snow was in really good shape, so all the routes back to P1 were fun, in their own way. I can imagine much less so if icy or polished. I just had a great day, no complaints. Going back as soon as work and snow allow.

Some more classic Serre Che slack country yesterday, taking another Geezonaire out for a brief tour, though three of us were a little paranoid after our last one, but we kept this guy in check.
Spring snow was a tad sticky, but again being very fussy.
Great thing about this line is that it's a good descent but only 270m climb back up, though I carried on to the bottom of the valley floor with a lush descent and then had the incentive of trying to catch them back up, which I just about managed to do, but I was well fecked doing that at around 550m an hour!
We'd parked up at Monetier as that meant we didn't have to ski the slush fest of Vallons and Le Bez as late afternoon on tired legs and touring gear it's hard work, and the Blue Rochamout piste back to the Peyra Juana for well-earned drinks on the terrace at that time of day is a dream with an empty piste and lovely grippy spring snow.
They skin up from roughly where those three individual rocks are left of picture, whilst I traversed across the face and then drop down into the valley below.
Grand Prix this weekend with it all finishing at Pointless rather than Monetier, which seems daft given the limited parking etc
Weather as ever keeps changing, but at least tomorrow looks better for the Grand Prix.
Gentle tour en famille up at the Lautaret and mutley this morning.

Heading out to SC for next week, got a very stupid o'clock flight tomorrow morning from Gatwick. Snow forecast is predicting very cold weather for Thursday, can anyone in the know tell me whether that's likely to be accurate? I'd only been planning on bringing stuff for Spring conditions!
@karin, the following website plots the forecast generated by a large number of different models and they are all in agreement that the 26th is going to be substantially colder than the seasonal average:
@karin, weather is a little unsetlled this coming week to say the least, though you can never be too sure about the forecasts, best to take one day at a time, if you're staying in Villeneuve/La Salle then we have loads of winnter clothing we could lend you, even makes me think there's a little business to be had for SH's coming to Serre and want to travel light, and of course all top brands
@rambotion, that link is for Grenoble
So it was a great day weather-wise for the Grand Prix yesterday, given that up to a few days before it was grim.
The new finish at Pointless was deemed to be a great success, though all the parking area was given over to the event and associated stands so you can imagine what the actual parking was like in the surrounding area, really had to be seen to be believed
We had an amusing time walking the dogs with Ullr, confronting various people dressed as inflatable dinosaurs and the like
Weather wise, like I say one day at a time, and Friday's tour en famille conditions on "screen" looked great and it was wall to wall sunshine, but there was a chill wind that just stopped the all-important melt, so we really had to ski nigh on E/SE slopes even at 12:30 and the biggest barometer was at Fred's everyone was opting to eat inside with only a few hardy souls drinking outside well wrapped up.
Yesterday I opted for XC and first thing, the cross-country piste was superb, and I achieved some PB's on the way up and down past Le Casset (18km in 70mins), and that is down to the piste and improving technique, given that I'm nowhere near as fit as I once was six or so years ago when I first started XC skating, but then I was well trashed for most of the day
As forecast, the sleet/drizzle/rain started around 08:00 and I doubt that we'll see any real accumulations on the terrace but could be circa 10cms up the hill by the end of the day?
I'm day-off-ski as could be in for a big day tomorrow as been invited by Team Swede to join them with a guide for a descent I've not done since I was last on a snow-board, but not too sure how this weather will affect that plan?*
But Mon - Wed look like great ski days and will just keep an eye on Thursday, but could always beast myself on Wednesday and have a dayoffski Thursday
*just heard that plan is not happening, too much avy debris in the couloir which is one of Europe's longest, Combe de Riou oh well probably have to wait another 18 or so years, as it's so rarely in good condition
@rambotion, thanks for the confirmation!
@Weathercam, I had a last minute relent and put in the warm down jacket, warmer leggings, and the heated gloves, so I should be ok!

This was from the weekend
So Sunday was grim, but that meant there was fresh snow to be had with good viz yesterday, classic bluebird.
I was out on a big day, so I went to the boulangerie early (07:50) to get some sustenance, their pain sportif is great, and it was like a ghost town, just no one around!
OH then drove me up to Monetier where I was meeting team Swede and a guide and that turned out to be probably the most epic day of the season.
More about what we did in the Ski-tour thread , and just a taster
Five or so hours later, we ended up in Le Casset, and there was a big funeral going on at the church; whoever it was, they must have been highly respected, with that turnout!
And have to say I did not expect Chez Finette to be open, so a great finish to the day.
Called the OH to kindly ask her to come and get me, and OH said how both she and my daughter had a great morning skiing in one of our usual stashes, skiing untracked all morning, saying it was just so empty up there with 10+ cms fresh.
Think I may be back out with Team Swede tomorrow and then all eyes are on for a short sharp snap of nigh on extreme winter weather on Thursday.
The strong winds, together with the below-zero temps, are going to make it a day to stay indoors, or if on holiday here, book a restaurant and enjoy a great lunch.
I'm not too sure how much fresh we'll see but what we will get will be trashed by the wind anyway
This from Meteo 05 FaceBook
BRUTAL RETURN OF WINTER:
As announced yesterday, the return of cold is no longer in doubt.
Yes he will arrive Wednesday evening and he will settle in for a little while.
With it, a strong north wind will be present, adding to the cold feeling. It'll blow up to 70km/h!
Also, driven by this wind, giboulees are not to be ruled out in the night from Wednesday to Thursday and Thursday especially near Isère and Savoie.
10 to 15 cm of fresh snow is possible between Devoluy, Écrins and Thabor.
Floods further south are possible with a few inches at the key.
What will be the most to watch for will be frost in areas hit by early vegetation.
While Wednesday will still be at the best of the day between 11-15 degrees, Thursday will only be 2-7 degrees, a drop of 8 degrees in 24 hours without wind.
Starting Thursday morning, freezing temps will be mostly widespread except in the wind chimes with -6 to 0 degrees in the valleys!

Looks like Thursday might be a good day for a shopping trip to look for a new ski jacket, then. My current one is about 11 years old, was originally my daughter's, and did a ski season with her before she got bored of it and I started using it. It's looking pretty tired now.

Lots of lifts at altitude closed today due to the strong winds that kicked in yesterday.
Difficult to tell how much snow has actually fallen as it's all but been blown away
Another great day with a guide yesterday, and just goes to show that it's an investment well made, as that's two pretty close to epic days this week, and gets me going way out of my normal comfort zone, more in the ski-tour wally thread in the Off-Piste section.
Lautaret currently closes, no surprise there, though we have a friend coming from Grenoble via bus today, however it's scheduled to reopen circa 16:30 or so.
And up at a friends hotel* last night in Le Bez (and probably one of the best meals we've had in the valley this season), and in her bar she has this old piste map, which shows many an old drag, and in fact shows the drag up to my little hillock

Wow, that looks a bit different to today's piste map!
The skiing today wasn't nearly as bad as it might have been. Spent the day lapping the runs on Bachas chair and the Etoile drag - not very exciting I guess if you have a place out here, but if you get 2 weeks a year on snow, you make the most of them. The snow was good, the slopes were empty, the sun came out occasionally, and because I had put in the cold weather gear at the last minute, I was perfectly warm enough.
You know it makes sense.

Pré du Bois drag lift was a shocker!! Also reminds me what a pain it used to be to ski from/to Monetier before they put in the Vallons and moved the Cote Chevalier chairs.
Like karin, I also grabbed an hour+ in Monetier and despite the wind there was good skiing on the pistes either side of the drag. In fact, all the pistes I've skied this week around the mountain have been in as good a condition as I can remember. Heading off for some more sunshine now, last three days of the season for me.

Had a day off yesterday and knew this morning might still be windy and cold, and indeed it was, so that ruled out any touring.
So I'd already opted for a piste thrash, especially as I have new boots, so it was out with the GS skis and a good thrash was had.
I was thoroughly enjoying the excellent pistes and joked going up Bachas, which one the OH had reserved just for us, as they were nigh on empty at times
Even back down Cucumelle / Le Bez, the piste was excellent, though in fact the piste down from Eychauda chair to Cucumelle chair was horrendous as the wind had scoured it down to the icy boiler plate.
And going up Vallons chair, it was as cold as any of the coldest days of the season such was the wind-chill.
Could be more of the same tomorrow until things warm up a bit more.
And whilst empty, seemed every other person was a Brit.
And heads up for the food in the Off-Piste in Pointillas, as we normally eat at Matts next door but was too fecking cold and no dogs inside, (daughter walked them down) excellent onion soup with two hot cheese croutes etc €10 and pizza €14 and that was after coffee at Peyra Juana - we were right little piste skiers today
Think more of the same tomorrow, still breezy but not as cold, though still on the chilly side right into next week, and breezy.
And new boots just awsome.
And walking around the last few nights, it's absolutely bitter, as I'm wrapped up as if it's the coldest night in January!!!

Another chilly one!
Needed to shift the shabby cobwebs from my head after a bit of a longer pero than originally scheduled last evening in the 1420.
Plan was to ski hard, top to bottom on all runs without stopping, hence I was Billy no mates
OH dropped me off at Pointless for first lifts and I made the most of the corduroy down Le Bez then back up to Cucumelle and then blast down non stop back to Pointless on lovely empty pistes hitting 84kph and nearly taking out OH and daughter near the end
Then back up with them and a coffee stop at Alpage before more solo blasting.
Plan was to ski down to Briançon but wind was picking up and Aravet Gondola was shut due to the wind, so a few Casse descents, and then a Luc, all non stop before finally accepting that the weather was closing in with the wind and ever increasing flat light which made it difficult to see the icy bald patches, so finished at 12:40.
Those new boots are superb, I'm skiing hard, and yet it's like when I wear my Mojo, little perceived effort and more importantly little or no knee pain with the only twinges being when bending down and taking my boot off.
Wouldn't say pistes were busy, though at times many a jeune blasting all over the place bit like this old fart, but I like to think I'm in control
OH and daughter reported that Monetier was devoid of people.
Think many weekenders are jere taking advantage of Airbnb deals and cheap holiski @ €33 with more cars in the parking next to us than I've seen for quite a while.
Unfortunately weather is grim for tomorrow which is a shame as the crazy pond skimming is scheduled for tomorrow just by the Grotte.
And then Monday looks like time to batten down the hatches again with strong winds.
And mate sent me some pics of them scoring some good cold snow up on the Combeynot side of the Lautaret.
Any particular reason why so many lifts / chairs are closed there today?
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Very strong winds - but all things considered most things were open. That said, we had a very unpleasant ride up on the Pontillas with the wind shaking the cabin.
Despite that had some great piste runs and will be back out tomorrow for a last blast
Just arrived, quite cold out. Son slept in so missed ski school today. Hired electric car (Jeep Avenger) from Turin and seems a bit of hassle really. Drivalia, only benefit was no cross border fee and reasonably chesp. Staying beside the one charger in Chantemerle and seems always in use so far! 50 percent of battery expended from Turin, lucky I'm not driving much.

It's that time as the season draws to an end when silly events, start to happen, and I'm kicking myself I did not mention it on here earlier, but then the forecast for today was grim.
That said earlier in the day, the Lautaret webcam tempted me to drive up there with a blue sky and what looked like untracked cold snow, and indeed a mate scored good turns up there yesterday.
But on arrival, the cloud had rolled in, and it was a jour blanc / flat-light, so I just had a coffee and called it a day.
And then the sun came out later on and it was a dog walk to the Grotte to enjoy the show.
As for the forecast, looks like the uber strong winds (70kph gusts) that were forecast for tomorrow are no longer, though still remaining cold, and similar for Tuesday, but I don't think we'll see lifts closed again like Saturday.
And then looks like sunny weather and getting warmer mid to end of the week, so should be some great piste skiing conditions, and apart from many Brit school children think that even though it's Easter the pistes should be nice n'empty, enjoy!

This weather is so unseasonal, though as I said to the OH at least it's keeping the pistes in good condition.
All the forecasts differ on the amount of sunshine, wind and temps and normally when you can get a better idea of the day in store in the morning that's not the been the case, as we're getting a right mixture of conditions during the day.
I suppose a good example of the weather conditions is that we've not been eating outside for quite a while, nor sitting on the terrace in the afternoon, and have not skied and decent Spring snow apart from on the lower pistes which are softening up earlier with the sun stronger in the sky.
That all said I'm sure the literally hundreds of school kids out here are not worrying about those things
Today we tried a ski tour starting at the Rif Blanc tunnel up towards the Lautaret and met two other friends there who both decided not to bother, and three of us went for a speedy 520m skin before deciding to turn back as weather was a tad grim, and the snow was hard icy snow that had gone through a few freeze melt cycles but for us was still frozen and was a real workout on the quads akin to an electronic pulse massager
It was only lower down did we get some decent turns in the softer snow.
Mates have a guide booked next three days and he was on the phone basically saying he wasn't too sure what to recommend given the current conditions.
I'm going to take a look up the Granon road tomorrow just with the e-mtb (no ski gear) to see how the access is shaping up.
Forecast is still looking better for the end of the week but apart from tomorrow and that might well change there will be plentiful sunny periods, though not t-shirt weather on the terrace though maybe Thursday onwards for that ?

Cold alright, skied down toward Monetier this morning and a very chilly wind blowing right into my face, had to stop for a coffee to warm up. Felt a bit warmer around Chantemerle ski area. Actually pistes quite nice when I got back there, off piste crusty where I tried off top of Cucumelle.

Fresh snow overnight, not that much but enough to have fun. Wind a big factor today, upper lifts mostly closed, was very cold but persisted as there was fresh snow. Looking forward to forecast warmer days from Thursday.
