 Poster: A snowHead

Hi fellow 'headers,
Its that time again, choosing where to go. We're restricted to Easter holidays, 2 adults 3 children, flying out 4th April for. self catered week somewhere high (obviously).
I've done my research and found a number of options within a budget of around 6-7k all in (incl. passes, kit hire, transfers etc.)
At the mo, my top 3 are:
1. Tignes Val Claret staying at Le Jhana apartments (5 mins walk to swimming pool facilities)
2. La Plagne, Belle Plagne, staying at Le Balcons (potential to upgrade to Half Board but the kids are 9-15 and still fussy with food!)
3. W2050 apartments, Plagne Soleil.
All are relatively similar in price.
This will be the 5th year for the kids - still tentative on harder reds. They've done La Plagne twice, Meribel & Les Arcs 1950.
La Plagne is still up there because of the proximity of lots of blues around Belle Plagne BUT I haven't been to Tignes in a long time and fancy a change.
Any experiences of the above accomodation or any thoughts are welcomed before we book on Sunday.
Thanks!!!!

Take them to Tignes. Espace Killy is a far, far better ski area than La Plagne

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Really? Like I say, I've done Tignes and Val D a number of times but it was a long time ago. I'm surprised you think it's so much better. Interesting. Thanks.

@Dom74, I'm not sure on what criteria @JDL65, is basing that opinion.
Both are good ski areas. If you want a change then go to Tignes.
I sense you are thinking the piste skiing will be a bit tougher in Tignes. Which is probably is on balance. But 5th week in, the kids should be fine.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@JDL65, Is right in my opinion and apart from the skiing I also add that they have built far too many beds for the ski area in La Plagne and you get some terrible pinch points . I do wonder if the Colosses lift in Belle Plan should have been called Colossus because of the size of the Q .
It’s all down to opinion and what you are used to but we get a free day in La Plagne with our season pass in Sainte Foy but don’t bother to use it .

Tignes has a far superior lift system, fewer bottlenecks, better runs, better designed mountain, more vertical so longer runs etc etc

Never many bottle necks at Easter.
Both very good ski areas.
I prefer Les arcs to La Plagne but notice they have upgraded one of the main lifts in la plagne this year which should ease congestion.
Kids will be fine in easier resort, but may feel more confident skiing pistes they already have experience of.
Worth looking at lessons. Esf team rider or evo2 yeti rider/junior rider are a good path into skiing the wider resort/off piste.
Longer runs can be great, but shorter runs can help with kids lower stamina.

Yes, La Plagne doesn't have many long runs. Roche de Mio to Champagne is only a 1500m drop and from the Bellecote is not much over a kilometre vertical to the Vanoise express. No where near as much as the 2km from Aiguille Rouge to Villaroger.

I like both areas ie. Tignes / VDI and La Plagne / Les Arcs.....but I marginally prefer Tignes.
I prefer staying in Les Arcs if skiing that area.
If you intend only skiing in La Plagne, then Tignes all the way.
If skiing the whole area, I would still give the edge to Tignes, as you are basing yourself in La Plagne.

Have done both La Plagne three times with a large group including kids of all ages. We then did Tignes and the kids adored it (having also loved La Plagne). If you already fancy the change yourself the kids won't be disappointed.

No idea about Tignes but Belle Plagne over Plagne Soleil every time! Soleil is just too small and not enough to do in the evenings, plus all runs off in the mornming lead to one 4 man lift back up (bergerie) which gets very congested.
Belle Plagne you have a lot more choice in the town plus you can get the gondola down to Bellecote in the evenings to give you more choice (although it is over run with students and 'young' people... )

Stayed in Les Balcons a few times and it’s really good. Some of the rooms were renovated last year and they were nice. I think W2050 is actually also in Belle Plagne but in the main shopping centre. So it’s much better located (or rather Les Balcons is about a 5 minute walk down the road) but it seems a lot more expensive. Balcons is true ski in ski out. W2050, if I am thinking of the correct one, you have to walk 30 minutes in front of the shops and ski shops etc. Not a big deal of course but just thought I would I would mention. Les Balcons also has a pool which is nice, can get bread and pastries delivered and also has a couple of places to eat right next door.

 You know it makes sense.

Supposedly in the past a week's Espace Killy lift pass included one day in the Paradiski and vice versa. Espace Killy then ended the arrangement because vastly more Paradiski pass holders came up the road for their day in the Espace Killy than the other way round. If true this tells you everything about which one to choose

Never been to La Plagne but did take young teen kids to Tignes at Easter a few years ago. Really opened their eyes to a bigger resort having been to smaller ones. Val Claret would deffo be where I'd stay at Easter (and we did). Snow much better later in the day.
