@Dr John, Interesting - the rumour I heard came from the different end of the age spectrum. Have to wait and see!
What a difference a day makes. A layer of cloud persisted all day with a bit of snow blowing in the wind. The top of the cloud was at about 3000m so there were big queues to get there. So I elected to wait till lunchtime - no clearance so abandoned the thought of downhill skiing and chose to go uphill instead to the top of Chaudannes. You can tell it's the Easter week - lots of tiger Dads shouting at their kids as a form of instruction, instead of employing a professional.
We had 3-5cm overnight.
In other news The French Alpine Ski Championships start tomorrow and run all week around the Lognan piste - so expect Tichot to be busy. Also La Scara starts in Val on Tuesday - this is essentially the filter for international teenagers, those who score well and go onto their National Teams, those that don't will be knocking on the door of the ski school boss. They use the OK piste and lap the Marmottes Chair with little or no regard for other piste users - beware.
The interaction between the High over the Bay of Biscay and the weather fronts coming from the North West is causing a real headache for the finest electronic brains in meteorology, so what I am typing may turn out to be utterly wrong. But tomorrow will be windy and light snow will fall through the day. The current forecasted gust strength means stuff will open but then may close as the day progreess. I think the top lifts will be shut from the start. We might see hints of sun in the morning and another 5cm of snow should arrive over the 24 hours. Most models think Tuesday will have fast moving sunny periods but a couple have light snow and overcast conditions in the morning. Again there is disagreement for Wednesday - tricky to say but on balance sunny periods. Thursday will be sunny as the fronts clear out. After that the outlook is for a period of sunny weather with temperatures returning to normal.

I just had some plans cancelled and it seems that I'll be able to visit Tignes / Val D'Isere starting 13/04! From what I've seen so far in the thread, snow conditions are good, however I fear that they may not hold until that date.
Well, at least the Glacier in Tiges will have some snow left to ski around that time... Looking forward to see more updates until then

@peterpan, You will be absolutely fine - I will eat my flat cap if you can't ski to Les Brev on 13 April.
PS Welcome to snowHeads
Might be a duvet day - there were hints of sunshine initially but its now snowing and the wind is blowing - both glaciers are shut. Keep an eye on the links - the wind is going to pick up.

Really looking forward to it. A couple of friends want to go to St Anton due to the recent snow reports that they've had just a couple of days ago, but honestly being in a lower altitude than Val D'Isere / Tignes, I much prefer to keep it safe and get some glacier skiing as well.

Not just dads and kids...
I was riding up Marmottes end of last week. Myself and two other English lads in their late twenties on the lift. I was by myself so couldn't help but listen in on the bizarre conversation. The one nearest me was wearing 90mm+ skis that looked a little too big for him and the other out of sight was attached to a snowboard. The one with the skis was teaching the one with the snowboard how to ski and the one with the snowboard was giving skiing advice to the one with skis. None of the advice seemed very coherent. I was thankfully at the left edge of the chair and as we reached the top I primed myself for a quick exit. Thankfully I did as the one with the snowboard immediately wiped out and fell on his face in the lift exit zone narrowly avoiding taking his friend with him. I thankfully skated away out of the danger zone asap. I pity whoever had the misfortune to encounter them on any other day.
This sort of stuff shouldn't happen and lifties and pisteurs should be taking people aside and asking them about their life choices. Someone will get hurt.

@Dr John, I should have stuck with the Tour de Sofa but I opted for Tour des Soldes, and the credit card took a bashing - but then I will be the epitome of sartorial elegance next season (well in my head anyway).
More and more lifts are closing as I type as the winds pick up - the snow has eased off but its tricky to say how much has landed as it was a swirling blizzard. Most of it could be on my balcony!
Tomorrow will be mostly sunny, but there are differing views on when the high cloud will vanish - from before breakfast till lunchtime. They may be thick enough to produce a bit of light diamond dust in the air. It will be windy and cold - don't be conned by a blue sky, I think nearly all the lifts will be open when the pisteurs have rearranged the snow into an eye pleasing fashion. Just keep an eye on the avalanche risk with all the wind transport. And then Wednesday to Friday will be primarily sunny with the odd bit of variable cloud on the peaks (especially in the afternoon. But the cold nights and cool days (for the time of year) will remain until the weekend when spring looks like popping back.
The annual "Spot the first Marmott Competition" is now on - my moneys on Sunday!

Reminder to self to read CA’s morning post and to check the Apps and lifty boards before enjoying a fun Triffolet lunch with visitors - there was an excellent and diligent alert at 13:50 from the Tignes App telling Tignards to head home because of building winds - sadly I found the alert at around 15:30. Post lunch took us down to the Funi and up into a veritable hoolie but ace visibility (apart from the horizontal stinging wind) to see in the near distance the Borsat empty and at a standstill - in the far distance Tommeuses was turning with folks on it - I was reassured - down through the surf park and joined the large static queue - the lift was turning empty of all souls and the clouds at altitude were inexorably scudding along with a crazy north westerly. Dropped down to La Daille bubble in time to see the lifty updating her board which currently showed Borsat and Tommeuses closed - she reached for her trusty stylo and inscribed - was it going to give an opening time for Tommeuses ??? Sadly not: she merely added the Marmottes TS to the list of defunct chairs… we did two more bubbles in truly excellent trees then joined the amorphous mass of humanity in the Funival car park to squeeze on to one of the three scheduled buses back to Tignes which (all scheduled to turn up at once (at 16:25?)). It didn’t look plausible that we’d all make it, let alone on the same bus but it all worked out and three buses and 40 minutes later it was back home in Val Claret. It really wasn’t that bad having the links close on us for the first time ever in over 20 years - I’d always been really paranoid over it - I don’t plan to risk it again though…. A fine example of P*** Poor Preparation. Looking forward to a fairer day tomorrow

Another grand morning in the Alps - the cloud persisted more than even the most pessimistic model and at times the cloud was very thick.....
We had about 10cm of snow on average - but that meant new snow depths of anywhere between zero and 25cm of fluffy dry snow. The morning was all about dodging the cloud layer and micro navigation to keep in the deep stuff. We started off beyond Epilobe which was great and were going to repeat - but the ski schools had arrived at Chaudannes so up Paquis and then down Familial - great snow but after 200m of descent we discovered how thick the fog was and skied about 250m vertical by braille. . Good job we knew the route intimately. The queue at La Daille was bad with mini racers etc so we had a coffee and then lapped fresh tracks round Combe Folle followed by a couple of laps of the Aiguille Percée chair and then a trip down Sache. As the morning went on there were quite a few human induced avalanches - mostly big sluffs but one with a crown line of hal a metre between Silene and Sache - quite a moment I imagine. There is still quite a lot of cloud about so hopefully tomorrow's snow pack will have maintained most of its quality.
Tomorrow morning will most likely be sunny and cold with a decent breeze at altitude, but I can't rule out some high cloud like today. A few fluffy clouds will build on the peaks in the afternoon. Thursday will be a couple of degrees warmer - otherwise identical. Friday, pretty similar. maybe a degree warmer. Saturday - spring returns in full: blue skies and sunshine, light breezes and 8 degs warmer than today.

We headed from VC towards Le Lac this morning, snow was amazing and visibility generally good, few foggy patches but a vast improvement over the last two days!
Then on the funicular at midday with a couple of laps of vanoise chair before the double m back down. All superb and not busy at all.

@Charlie333, I know the Coco’s in Val is very strict now on age and have a sign at the entrance ( I’ve just been on my annual visit for our daughters birthday)
Over half term a lot of places in Val insisted on passports for ID and have posted on instagram that it will be the same over Easter/Uni holidays. I don’t follow many places in Tignes so the rules might be more lenient.
Bollin might be an option at the top of the lift.
If you want something apart from pizza I can recommend Kaijo in Lac, we’ve had a couple of good lunches there this season.

Well this morning I thought the Poisson D'Avril had been altering all the thermometers in Lac, but indeed it was -10 on the Parade Square at 9AM - and the snow was squeaky cold under the skis. Bar the super thick thermals I was in full winter mode. We had a mini off piste morning as I teamed up with BobSki62 and a mate. To ensure that we stayed away from slopes that had been in the sun yesterday our plan was to head off to Pentes Barthelemi. Even the bootpack up barely warmed us up but when we got to Pente No2 we were the first in - whether it was because yesterday's wind had covered the tracks or the vis yesterday was too poor for folks to ski down we were rewarded with very cold fluffy snow and freshtracks. Further down required one to think about aspect as there was a variety of conditions. But it barely gets better under Risk 2 conditions. It was too good not to do again - so we did - by now word was out and you had to search for the untouched - even Val D'isere ski schools had come over. Following a restorative coffee in Brev, we headed off to Familial where the snow was still soft and fluffy but chopped up. A bit of a piste cruise followed as an afternoon meeting beckoned. Kaijo are cooking tonight!
Tonight will be cold again and tomorrow will be sunny with the odd fluffy cloud on the peaks in the afternoon. There will be quite a breeze about at altitude, so it will still feel cold despite a 2 degree rise in temperature. Friday will be a degree warmer other wise a carbon copy. Saturday should see the breeze disappear and a temperature rise of another 4 degrees. Sunday, same as Saturday - but add another degree. Then springlike until later next week.

Bright blue skies this morning and about 4 degs warmer than yesterday morning. But, there was a chilly wind at altitude (when we were not boot packing). First off we went to Aigullie Percée and down Pente DZ where the snow was still cold and wintry but a little chopped - but much fun was had. As it was a slightly later start we then had a coffee in Brev and then around the pistes which were firm for most of the day and in good condition for carving. The next expedition was Telegraph which was the full box of chocolates! Finally we skied round the Palet Bowl and back for a late lunch.
Tomorrow will be the last coolish one for a while, bit the overnight and daytime temps will be 2-3 degs warmer than today, the cheeky breeze will persist but the sun should shine all day. Saturday will be another 4 degs warmer and the brezze will vanish, again sunny. Friday night into Saturday will be about 10 degs warmer than earlier in the week, so we will be lacking a deep overnight freeze up to about 2500m. Sunday will be similar with a few more fluffy clouds. Monday will be another bluebird. The longer term outlook is for sun till Wednesday and then a more unsettled and cooler run into the weekend.

Spring has arrived with quite a few marmottes playing under Palafour this morning. Again it was a bit warmer than yesterday. It was a quick morning as I had a last shopping run to Bourg to complete this afternoon. So we set off for Tour de Charvet which has decent snow cover at the top (bare in small patches) but excellent depths at the bottom - so no stream hopping etc. The snow at the top was varied - another half hour would have meant more soft snow but then you run the risk of the Alpine Gods throwing lumps of snow at you from the top of Charvet as the rocks heat up - so better to be safe than sorry. Unfortunately, the Manchet Express broke down with us on it. It became obvious that they had closed the runs down and I was just beginning to think we were at one of the highest points above ground for a rescue when it started to move slowly towards the top after 21 minutes. There was a nice lifty giving out vouchers for a free drink at the top, so off to Le Lounge to spend it and then a couple of black runs home!
Springlike weather will reign for quite a few days. The temps will shoot up by 6 degs tomorrow and the overnight temps will increase as well. So what was firm at 12 today will be soft by 11! The sun will shine for all 4 days - there may well be a bit of cloud around through Saturday and Sunday evenings - but nothing to spoil the day time fun. The winds will also be negligible. From mid week its all very uncertain as high pressure systems over the Azores and Scandinavia squeeze together with some weather in the sandwich - it will take time to resolve that!
For the travellers - the forecast is for 22k vehicles coming up and 23k going down, so barely any delays on the roads unless everybody leaves at once! Flying over here will be fine but Storm David will come into play tomorrow afternoon. So for those on early flights it may be a bit bumpy but later ones (post 1400 from Birmingham northwards) the crosswinds may preclude landing or involve some holding as showers clear. The London airports should be OK, the detailed airport forecasts for the afternoon and evening are a few hours off yet so its a bit tricky to say.

Bright blue skies this morning and a layer and a half warmer! A gang of snowHeads +1 had a ski round the Bellvarde pistes which were firm to start with, then softening depending on aspect. As the Val Club were using the top of OK Orange we did a cheeky traverse just below the course and had a beautifully pisted Orange all to ourselves - immaculate! I'm having folks round to dinner tonight so I knocked off early. By 1130 it was getting soft in the last 250m vertical down into La Daille - so normal for the time of year.
It will be a bit warmer tonight than last night bit day time temps will be similar to today. There may well be a thin veil of high cloud that will take the sting out of the sun for a bit - then light breezes. It's then 3 full days of Marmottes whistling and Dame Vera singing as we have 3 days of blue skies, sunshine and light winds. The temps will reamin similar to today and the terraces will be busy from early afternoon.
For the fliers tomorrow will be great over here, the UK will still have blustery showers but OK for flying. Buckle up for departure. There may be an odd sleet shower Newcastle and northwards. The main issue will be where the aircraft end up tonight, at times the wind will be out of limits from anywhere north of Birmingham - so the ops guys will be busy if diversions happen. As the Easter hols are in full swing most aircraft will be programmed tomorrow as the bucket and spade gang head to the Med - so not a other of spare capacity if the chess pieces are on the wrong square of the board.

A day of spring skiing around the pistes of Bellvarde and the Grande Motte. The pistes are holding up well and soon go from hard to soft in the sun, out of the sun they are remaining firm. Not a lot else to say really.
A bit of cloud is building up now and there may be the odd sprinkling of snow around midnight, but we wont notice because by teh time dawn breaks we will be in for 3 days of wall to wall sunshine and springlike temperatures. Thursday is a bit more tricky - probably sunny most of the day with cloud building later. It currently looks like any precipitation will wait till Friday - but no promises!

Super warm! It was +10 this morning, there had been some drizzle in the village overnight which meant a dusting of snow on the pisted slopes above 2500m. There was also a breeze which helped contribute to the rapid softening of the pistes - so in our search for spring snow we had to recalibrate our thinking. So first off we were intending to ski Lognan but Piste Merles was closed for another bunch of racers so we had to settle for the Grand Huit pimples. We then traversed to Clochetons (other names are used) which was a mix of snow but challenging. Jam Bar for coffee and losing a couple of layers! It was time to go high so up the M and down to Vanoise, the lower section was already chopped up and then variants of Genepy before returning home via the Palet Sector. With the heat there was a lot of natural avalanche activity - which will continue, as these day and night time temperatures are going to continue - it's probably wise to not go off piste after lunch. Worryingly, it's not just the standard 'pear' shaped slips from a point - they are propagating and going down to weaker layers, this could really spoil your day. It may soon be time for some afternoon blasting on places like the Lavachet Wall.
The forecast for the next 3 days is simple - very warm and sunny. The breeze may pick up on Thursday afternoon. After that the models are 180 degs out from each other - from sun to storms so I'll say nothing more!

Another warm one. So it was a 9 o clock start with a trip down to Brev where there is still plenty of snow. As Sache had been pisted we then did that - hard at the top, softening on the steep pitch facing into the morning sun. There were a lot of serious looking technicians working on a pylon near the top of the Aiguille Percée chair this morning - hope it is under guarantee! After the sun had worked its magic we did a couple of variants of Lognan, which of course involved a couple of bus trips from the bottom. Anf finally, we did the top half of the Familial. All 3 were in good condition, with soft snow, spring snow and not quite so soft snow in equal measure. Home for lunch. We are eating at Drôle D'Endroit tonight - the new Bouvier place in the old municipal garages a couple of doors down from the Loop. Will report back.
Wednesday and Thursday will be a degree or two warmer than today, blue skies and no wind. Friday looks now like a windy day (not too bad) and a couple of degs cooler with a milky sky. The sun returns on Saturday, maybe the odd cloud in the afternoon. Beyond that - not sure Sunday may be wet to around 2400m or it may be a nice day - all depending on a cold front coming from the north-west.
Unusually, the avalanche risk is rising from 1 early doors to 3 by the end of the day (I don't recall seeing a jump of 2 levels during a day before) - there is potential for some. big wet slides. Be on piste or on a terrace by midday!
