Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Price level and budget friendly restaurant recommendations in Val d'Isère

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi! We are a family with teenagers who are going to Val d'Isère for the Christmas week, arriving on Sunday 21st December. We are staying in a self-catering apartment in La Daille and are planning to drive there from the southeast of England. I have heard Val d'Isère is one of the pricier ski resorts in France, and am wondering what the price level is like when eating out in - both in the village and on the mountain (including in nearby Tignes)? Also, which budget friendly restaurants can you recommend for a meal out on Christmas Eve and which mountain restaurants offer good value? Thanks in advance.

You could try Paulo Cafe at Le Rond points des Pistes (used to be Chez Paulo). I haven't been since the new owners took it over.

Marmottes restaurant at the bottom of Borsat lift is the outstanding best value restaurant on the mountain.

BEWARE though that it can be a hotbed for ski thieves. Invest in some ski locks + split your skis and put one set by a window so you can see them. Yes it is 5 minutes faff but worth it.

Don’t let that put you off though. We eat there often. Just be conscious of your kit.

Le Petit Danoise (near the bottom of rue de parc de sports) is lively and great value for apres during happy hour.

Bar Jacques is also on rue de parc des sports. It’s not the cheapest but delivers great value for money for the delicious dishes that have had us returning for nearly 40 years. Great steaks & salads. Large pizzas also which are good for kids.

I would advise booking before you get to resort for the evenings you want to go out as it can get very busy at Christmas/ New Year.

If you’re going to cook a lot, Doing a big food & booze shop in Albertville or Moutiers (there’s a good carrefour there) will save you about 50% vs the supermarkets in town.

There is a separate Val thread well worth checking out. Especially check out access and parking in advance.

The prices for Ski hire can also vary enormously. We’ve had great service from precision Ski (again at the bottom of rue de parc des sports) when booked via Alpinresor/Alpy. If you haven’t used them before I recommend you do a search, enter your details so they get you on their mailing list but don’t proceed to actually make a booking straight away. They will then pester you with offers which are well worth it.

Also check out the family lift pass deals. I’m not sure you could find somewhere with the more expensive lift pass nowadays. And finally, as you’re driving, note that you are not able to buy a six day Espace Killy lift pass anymore the standard pass is seven days so it makes complete sense to Ski the last Saturday of your trip and leave around 4pm. This is what we will be doing from Tignes after the PSB. Because the traffic will be much lighter in the early evening, you should be able to get somewhere like Dijon by 8 pm for dinner.

It’s an expensive place to go on holiday, but is also one of the most magnificent skiers in the world. I hope you have a fabulous time.

On the mountain, there is the Cascade restaurant over on the glacier and Marmottes on the Bellevarde side. Both are always reported as being good value and owned by the same people. Datcha on the Solaise isn't too bad either and a good meeting point where all the Solaise blues join.

For a quick hot drink and a pastry, the Solaise Lounge (top of Solaise gondola) is good.

Off the mountain, The Garage in the town centre is good but gets busy and so you definitely need to book. For something quick and casual, the cafe/burger bar at the back of Roxy clothes store is an option.

In La Daille there is Jami Delivery who do take away and delivery of a variety of pizza, burgers and Thai curry. These can be eaten in TonTons bar next door too. Also in La Daille is TonTons restaurant which is great for meat eaters and is our personal favourite. It's slightly more expensive but I think good value for the quality and so worth a look. If you are used to South East gastro pub prices then you'll be fine.

Tignes side for lunch stops, there is The Corner at the bottom of Tuffs which is great for a pie or sausage roll etc. Over in Le Lac is Tignes Cuisine with is Asian street food and always popular with seasonaires. Both good value.

I'm sure others will come along with their suggestions.

@Motherofthree, the Marmots restaurant by the Borsat chair is about the best value on the mountain. Also LeLounge at the top of Solaise cabin is good for a coffee break at surprisingly good price (and the loos have a view to die for!).

Thank you so much to everyone who took the time to reply - very grateful for all the useful and insightful tips!! I have noted all of your suggestions. I wasn't sure if Val d'Isère is a good choice for a holiday on a budget, but we have previously visited other ski resorts that are considered a bit upmarket and managed to find good value places to eat out, so I thought I'd ask here. We are planning to eat in most evenings and take a packed lunch most days, but also want to have a couple of lunches and dinners out.

@Motherofthree, worth noting that if you are taking packed lunches, there are comfortable salle hors sac places on Solaise, at La Daille, Le Lac and Les Breviers. Drinking water, microwaves and vending machines. Might well be busy of course during the festive period.

@Ski lots, Thanks for the tip, sounds great! Do you know if there is hot (boiling) water available in these salle hors sac places?

@rickboden, @sno trax, Thanks for taking the time to reply and give us so many useful tips. Yes, we are planning to stock up on groceries in Albertville or Moutiers on the way to the resort. I signed up to receive emails from alpy.com and have already received a discount code - great tip! The lift passes look expensive and I'm surprised that you don't get more of a discount when buying the 6/7 day pass, compared with buying individual one day passes (although I am aware you get the free entry to the swimming pool though with the 6/7 day pass). We might buy lift passes for individual days instead of the 6/7 day passes, in case there is bad weather some of the days.

@v1cky24, We might see you there then! I think I saw your thread too with lots of good tips - love how helpful people are on this forum!

Super u & Lidl in Bourg St Maurice are good for shopping too at reasonable prices before you get to Val. Another option is the Carrefour in Tignes Le Lac which is less expensive than Val.

Paulo cafe at Rond Point has closed and is now a supermarket.

Marmots and Cascade (self service) are good on the mountain but tend to be busy at peak times so maybe try earlier or later. Rosee Blanche at bottom of La Daille is good for food at lunch time and not too expensive. There is also Equinox (bottom of piste in La Daille). The latter is dearer.

If you fancy a nice meal on the mountain - try Edelweiss (on piste down to Le Fornet), Trifollet (on piste down to La Daille), Les Trois Capucines (Tignes - across the road from Paquis lift). Would need to book.

And bring some gold bullion to pay with. It’s one of my wife’s favourites but definitely not cheap.

@Motherofthree, the Super U as you leave BourgStM is probably the least diversion from your route for groceries.

@jeanlane, Thanks for taking the time to reply. Good to know there is a Carrefour in Tignes Le Lac and thanks for recommending the mountain restaurants. Would love to have recommendations for affordable restaurants in Val D’Isere village for Christmas Eve too.

@Kenzie, No we haven’t booked parking yet. We are staying in an apartment in La Daille (switched from Val D village where we were originally going to stay). Is there any particular parking in La Daille that you can recommend?

There are two car parks in La Daille if your accommodation doesn’t offer it.
One is the outdoor Plaine de la Daille next to the Funival and the other is the La Daille covered, what you chose depends on where your accommodation is situated (buildings have drop off areas ) and if you are willing to possibly dig out the car if there is heavy snow fall.
Do you have a high vehicle or roof box ?

Consider possibly doing a click and collect at Super U as it will be very busy, also look at Picard which we find very good https://www.picard.fr/

One of the best value self catering meals is on a Monday when the rotisserie chicken van is part of the market, a cooked roast chicken and potatoes for 4 is about 22 €

We don’t tend to eat out in the evening over the festive season as it’s busy but Garage would be a good option with teenagers and its also easy to book online when the bookings open. Lodge is also very good and not bonkers expensive.

@muppet, Thank you so much for your response. I’m not sure what the residence is called as we booked it via Airbnb, but it’s one of the brown tall apartment blocks in La Daille. We have a standard SUV without a roof box and would prefer covered parking, so we wouldn’t need to dig the car out in case of heavy snowfall.
