Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I got an email from Chatel announcing the flash sale, all I did was buy a lift pass this season! 689 Euros for a winter season pass, 910 for the whole year.

I also got an email, but it says “Winter 599”… however, when I google it, it shows 689 everywhere Puzzled

By the way, since I have the season pass this year and probably won’t buy one for next season, I’m thinking of booking one more week in the Portes du Soleil, most likely in Avoriaz. Hopefully my daughter can also complete her Gold Star, and then we could choose somewhere different next season.

I do like the Portes du Soleil, but since my wife has postponed returning to skiing until next season, I think it might be better to avoid places like Avoriaz and look for something with fewer crowds, at least as much as possible. I’m even considering making an exception and going somewhere like South Tyrol because of the perfectly groomed slopes.

The question is whether I can manage to book in Avoriaz from Saturday/Sunday instead of Saturday to Saturday (i.e. from 28 March until 4th or 5th April).

@turms2, The 599 price is a private sale. You will soon receive an email from the station where you bought your previous pass with the offer and discount codes closer to the day. Many people in Châtel are yet to receive the email.

@@247snowman, thanks. Yeti sounds a good option. It has always looked rather busy on last few passes - overflow for the Folie, I think. But we can stop by on the pass through to the resort centre and check it out each day.

Just back from PdS, back out on 28th March.

Slushy afternoons, and no coverage nonexistent/low on some runs into Pleney/Nyon), but coverage fine down to Perrieres, Prodains and Ardent car parks.

Snow was excellent in the mornings. But rather hoping that this snowfall predicted for Wednesday happens...

@turms2, I don't recall December being overcrowded, although I guess that depends where you were, but pre-christmas skiing on both the Swiss side and Chatel round to Lindarets was not noticeably busy, and even xmas and new year was nothing like the crowds that we had for the two weeks of February holidays. Compounded by the lack of access to Pre la Joux, of course, particularly in the Chatel area, which I confess I simply avoided during that period.

@turms2 is right. Christmas was way too busy in Châtel last year.

It was a combination of a lot of early snow that made people book with "confidence", then a drought which meant that slightly lower resorts eg la chapelle, weren't open, concentrating the crowds in Châtel and probably the same in Avoriaz.

It's much quieter now

Morclan closes the weekend you get here and the rest of super Châtel the weekend you leave. It'll be very empty up there.

Super Châtel area has been great once the crowds disappeared after the feb holidays.

Just returned yesterday from 2 days skiing in Châtel and must say piste snow cover is excellent. Skiied a couple of lower runs that haven’t been able to open for many years such as the lower PLJ (the steep red to the left finishing at PLJ car park) and lower Casses Noisette. Super Châtel area also good except for the very bottom.

@turms2, the week you have booked should not be too busy at all. I assume Avoriaz? French generally don’t ski after Feb holidays and people will spread out due to the good snow. We are also be there for two weeks from 29th. Have you had your weekend in Châtel at Hotel Macchi?

You must have been there at the wrong time, pretty sure that's been operating at some point every season since I've been here. Certainly not that unusual that it's open.

@Chaletbeauroc, nope..Not compared with Februar of course but in the Christmas week was overcrowded.

It was was @snoozeboy, mentioned.

@Ozboy, nope. Unfortunately my son Had a small injury (from Ping Pong Puzzled ) and was Not allowed to do any Sport. Of course technically skiing was Not a Problem but saying to school that He will Not participate to the Sport activities and going private skiing was a little bit of Something. So we cancel it. Then i was intented to book for one night at 3th April and head at 4th to avoriaz for a week but some other Things come around and we have to Go one week earlier...so that Option ist also dissapeared.. rolling eyes

Yes Avoriaz... If you wil be there give a call...

Hi All,
Question regarding some ideas for this Tuesday. A friend and I are staying in Les Gets for a couple nights and we'll ski around there for our shorter days Monday and Wednesday, but on Tuesday we want to drive to Ardent or Prodains and cover some ground. Was thinking of starting in Prodains and working across to Chavanette via Grandes Combes and Fornet, then doing the Swiss wall and Ripaille and getting lunch over in Les Crosets. Then going back via Mossettes and then dipping into La Linga area via Lindarets.
Does this sound ok or better to do another way or park at Ardent etc? Or is there any reason to try to do the full circuit instead? We're advanced/fast skiers. Any recommendations of specific pistes that we shouldn't miss or good lunch spots in les Crosets? Thanks a lot!

Coquoz
Lapisa

Depends what you want, really. Coquoz is quality, lapisa is simple swiss stuff with a great view and a feeling of being away from the factory of Pds. Not sure if the latter will be open late season, but they often rope tow you back up to the lifts.

For a quick sandwich or bolo-ping (freezer, microwave, plate), I don't really know.

I'd second the Coquoz, which I don't think of as les Crosets, more Champery, but that's probably just me. It actually has three options, the proper sit-down restaurant, the self-service underneath it and an outside bar doing snacks, I think they also had an Oyster bar last time I ate there. The self really doesn't feel like a self, Once you've ordered they will bring the meal to your table, for example, and nice chairs/tables, not just rows crammed in. And a view.

Another one I like is the Buvette Chez Yoyo, skier's right on the run down from Grande Conche. Pizzas cooked in a tent/shed outside on a large terrace, a cosy mountain hut vibe inside, with a reasonably wide menu including snack-type things, hot dogs, stuff like that. Just always feels... nice.

@marcs44, You're setting yourself a target if you start from Prodains, much better starting from Ardent if you want to be able to be relaxed and not have to make ground up to get back there at the end of the day. TBH any options that avoids Avoriaz proper is preferable, IMO.

Had a lovely couple of days skiing so far this week! Rookie question - the forecast for Thursday is snow snow snow, we're in Morzine and I have in my head that skiing towards Les Get might be better? Could anyone give me any tips?

Looks a bit windy as well so I guess we'll go wherever is open but any thoughts welcome. Not off piste, that's above my pay grade. Very Happy

@klanfa, the adult+kid pass bundle normally works out similar to buying a flash sale adult and a child <12yo separately. It usually avaiable until September.
For PdS I go for the later, i.e. early sale for adults in April, and boarder pass for kids in September. As I believe the adult+kid doesn't extend the invites to kids.

@patrick!, do not know exactly the prices for the next season, but for the last season , the adult+kid pass bundle for 2 Adult + 2 kids <12yo was a little bit better pricely compared with buying early sale for adults in April, and boarder pass for kids later
the difference was not less than 100 Euro but it was a little cheapr

I think you're right, but I usually want the invites Smile (we fully use the 3, now 5, Haute Savoie ski decouverte, and very rarely the Swiss ones), plus our #1 is >12.

I guess we'll review again within 2 weeks!

@ElzP, lots of nice runs (and trees) in both Les Gets and Morzine, why do you think Les Gets would be better?

The stuff off the Charniaz chair is really nice mostly in the trees.

Ditto for the Ranfoilly bowl, but a bit more above the treeline.

@denfinella, @DJL, sorry - phrased that badly. I mean the whole morzine-les gets area. We've spent the last three days enjoying the avoriaz and beyond side, but wondered whether the morzine-les gets side would be fun in snow and wind... or if any locals knew what tends to be closed in such circumstances. snowHead

I have flights booked arriving in Geneva on Sunday and just need to pick some last minute accom... (Family of 4, kids 8 and 10, we're all low-intermediate skiers, but if there is pow I'll switch to a board while kids are in lessons).

Usually I'd look at Avoriaz or Flaine for snowsure close-to-Geneva skiing at this point in the season.... but I'm wondering if Morzine and Les Gets are worth a look given incoming snow? Looks like the snow might be gone next week with rising temps coming in - so should I stick to higher resorts?

As @Ozboy, says, it's been great skiing since early December. And with a big dump forecast for tonight and tomorrow, and a bit more on Saturday, and temperatures staying low it looks set to continue for the rest of the season.

Was out skiing around Super-Chatel with a couple of visiting Snowheads this morning, nice and sunny earlier but very windy and clouded over from about 1300, so we called it a day, as was always the plan. Back at home now, but the promised snow has not yet arrived, and the skies here in Morgins are perhaps not as dark as they were an hour ago, so who knows?

Edit: the Rain/Snow has now started, just minutes after I posted that.

Edit2: and an hour later the temperature has dropped and the snow is now beginning to settle.

Not surprised, with the winds we were getting earlier. Interactive map shows most of the higher lifts around Avoriaz and les Crosets closed as well. Glad we came in early, although the lifts where we were are still shown as running, but then we'd chosen that area based on the forecasts, so...
