Sorry to ask the obvious question but are you absolutely sure you have bought season passes? Only reason I ask is that when I went to renew this year their system had "lost" my photo which had been there for years the system would not let me complete the purchase until I had uploaded the missing photo.

i didnt try to renew . I bought for first time season passes. I had to put photos for the three of us and IDs for the kids. I had an account since 2023 i think, and i had some Key Cards already in system and i used them. But Photos and IDs i hat to upload them.
Thats the start of the email i got

PS i have to mention theis system is a little bit of crap. First i make everything for the daughter, by my son i had to wait for vaildating the Card for almost 5 min. Nothting happend, refresh, but again validating for more than 5 min without success.
Then i tray first with my son, was ok, then the daughter, also ok, but for me again waiting and waiting and waiting...
I tried more than 3-4 times but always didnt manage to go further.
Then i tried without cards, but pick up in Chatel, and was everything ok till the payment.
Then once again but with my Key Cards this time, and this time was successfull.

@Ozboy, its really amazing. I have to admit this.
However i will maybe buy also the Tirol Regio Card since the kids want to go with the Ski Club a few times in Sölden etc, and there is a big discount if you buy the Tirol Regio Card personally in October. So i do not know if i will use the extra days of the PDS.
However i have already booked two weeks in Avoriaz and Les Gets, and the Season Pass saved me around 150 Euro compared to buying 2 x 6 days PDS for the three of us.
Plus i have the PDS Pass if we decide to go in Avoriaz in Easter holidays, and i can add a Weekend in Engelberg or Jungfrau , but all these will be last minute decisions. But definitely i save some money with this offer, and from now every extra day we ski in PDS or someone from the other resorts is practically free (at least from my perception)

@porkpiefox, Yes, one would normally expect Avoriaz to be open above the village level, all the way over to Pre la Joux and Linga, at least with the higher-up runs open. Not guaranteed to be able to ski down to base level, but it has been the case by the next weekend that I can specifically recall at least three or four times in the last 7 seasons since moving here.
@turms2, Just to address the photo question, no, the lift pass does not have a photo on it these days; there are indeed screens at some of the bigger main lifts on the French side, but not all, and in Switzerland even the new lift out of Morgins relies on occasional spot-checks by a special team of three or four agents who each have a tablet linked to the lift which shows the pictures and details of everyone passing through. They're mainly looking for lending of tickets to mates or misdeclaration of age by young adults skiing on kid's passes. I've seen them making skiers produce some form of ID to prove they are legit, as of course it is normal and expected in CH that everyone will have an ID of some sort with them at all times.

@turms2, The newer lifts now have cameras that take a picture of people with day passes when they first pass the turnstiles the morning an then compare the photo as they pass again during the day to ensure they hav not transferred the pass to another person.

Maybe if you go back far enough, I dunno. I can't be sure how long ago they have not had them, but just checked my late wife's season pass, sans photo, which was first issued (and then renewed each year on the same card) in 2021.

Anyone know if there’s a child’s/beginners lift pass for Avoriaz?
Our two little ones (5 & 7) will be spending their mornings in the Village des Enfants (at the bottom of Dromonts). I guess they’ll mostly be doing laps of Dromonts & Ecole pistes/drags, although maybe the 7-year-old will get taken out further?
As far as I can tell both drags (Dromonts & Ecole) are chargeable? Villages des Enfants guidance is that 5 years and above need an Avoriaz lift pass. But when you go to the website to get a child’s 6-day Avoriaz pass it doesn’t appear to exist (have to buy 3x 2-day passes instead!).
The cost of 3x 2-day Avoriaz passes for a child comes to €222 (€74*3) vs. €233 for the full child’s PDS pass (which might be worth the extra just to avoid the hassle of juggling multiple lift pass cards).
Are we really looking at having to spend over €450 for the two wee ones to do their morning lessons?
I’m ranting a little here because last time we went to Flaine where kids lift passes are free up to 8 years old!

1 Adult + 2 Kids 89X (dont remember exactly 893 Euro? 899? but something like this)
But you have to go to Sales Points and buy them on person with IDs, Family Document , and Passport Photos (dont ask why), but of course the usual Pass Photos not these which are explicit for IDs etc
generally is around 699 pro Adult and Kids ca 350
But if you buy als Familycard the kids paying around 100 euro pro kid.
For us its also worth it, since we have already booked five days with the Ski Club and i came to 595 for these five days. Meaning with 300 euro we have Winter / Summer cards including claciers, Serfaus, also some Pools in summer, summer lifts etc

Any idea how you buy ski passes for the opening week? They don't seem to show up as options online. It would only be for 3 days, so I'm wondering if these have to be bought while you're there?
Edit - Answered my own question. Just spoke to them and they go on sale in November apparently.

@mrchips, Have a look here and scroll down to points cards:
https://www.avoriaz.com/decouvrir/les-incontournables/tarifs-des-forfaits-hiver/
The Dromonts drags take three points per ride (other lifts deduct more, it's pro-rata by altitude gain). A 100-points card is E69. I can't imagine your 5yo doing more than half a dozen rotations in a morning's lesson. Maybe get them one each (they are transferable) and see how many points they use on day 1 (the turnstiles display points-remaining each time they're used, or you can take them to the ticket office and they'll tell you). Your 7yo might be better with a beginner's pass depending on his level, you'll have to do the maths. (BTW there's no way the instructor would leave a kid behind if they suddenly run out of points, they'd blag them back to base and tell you to recharge the card for tomorrow.)

You may already know this but there is an event on for the first 3 days of the season - its called Rock On Snow and involves a discounted lift pass (£60ish for the full 3 days Fri 12 -Sun 14) and loads of snowboard and ski companies turn up to provide free demos of their equipment. Me and some mates have just booked. Fingers crossed for snow - from the research I did, there were mostly positive reports of previous years snow arriving in time.

@AvoAndi, No. At least not anywhere low enough to be noticeable. As I type it's 10C outside and absolutely pissing it down here at 1350m, with freezing level up near 3000m. But a quick check shows that we might be getting the first proper snowfall in just a couple of days

Was just reading this when we had a really close lightning strike - like just over where the chair lift is. The whole house vibrated for several seconds. So yeah, the torrential rain continues.
@under a new name, No, despite the lower temperatures expected over the next few days anything falling below around 2500m at this time of year will not survive. It's the same every year, with excited brits looking for snowfalls fr too early for them to make any difference (just about to pop over to the weather forecast thread for a laugh). Come back in another month or more for anything relevant.

Indeed, the perennial over-excitement at early flurries. It's a SHs tradition, or old charter, or something. |
And not just early flurries. This is likely to be an early dump at some altitudes, but it's still too soon to get hopes up for main season skiing. I think it was in 2012 or 2013 that we had a very heavy snow in early November, so it was thigh deep on the Grand Motte in Tignes and more than 30cm of fresh down in Tignes Les Boisses at 1800m. Smiles were very wide, and excitement for the forthcoming season was high. But when the main season started in mid-December there had been a mild, dry period since that heavy early snowfall, and conditions weren't great. Christmas week was poor, with thin, scratchy pistes on a lot of manmade until the snow returned on Boxing Day, IIRC. I'm a compulsive webcam watcher, like lots of other people here, but I try to contain my excitement in October and November.

Yup, I was in Les arcs at the time. Worst winter weather I've ever experienced in a ski resort. Two days of torrential rain at 1800m - I stayed indoors, ate a lot of cheese and drank a lot of wine. It fell as considerable quantities of heavy, wet snow above 2000m, terrifyingly unstable.

And they had the chair back running at 1/2 speed by February which was impressive given the importance of the link. The alternative busses that were put on were quicker, and avoided a very sllack cable, to reach Linga but still a good achievement.

They were actually running minibuses from and to the top of the Gabelou lift itself, directly top to bottom of the lift, from just a few days after the accident, which allowed a decent flow of skiers back down to the Vonnes car park at the end of the day, or indeed to link through to Superchatel at any time. In practice, by the time it was running again, albeit at half capacity and half speed, there was not very much of a hold up at all in either direction.
