Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Unidentified body found on slopes of Mount Asahidake Japan

A Facebook friend of mine who is living in Japan posted this news:

Strange, mysterious fatality on Asahidake on a common skiing and hiking route above or near the large fumeroles at the bottom of Jigokudani Couloir, the gorge that is the blown out crater visible from the west of Hokkaido’s highest mountain. We ski tour here frequently throughout the winter and the fumeroles are a very popular attraction for tourists year round.

The body was found clothed and wearing snowshoes, indicating that it had been there for quite some time. The snow would have mostly melted in and around that couloir some time in June. And you probably would not have been snowshoeing there since some time in May. So at minimum, it seems the victim must have been there for at least three months.

Nobody had been reported missing on Asahidake this year. Makes me wonder if this victim of some kind of mountaineering accident was a foreign visitor. Any Japanese citizen or documented resident like me would have certainly been reported missing.

The exact location where this body was found is not exactly clear. But it is a rather narrow, confined space. There is a lot of foot traffic up to the fumeroles, which are only a few hundred meters away from the upper terminal of the Asahidake Ropeway. If you get too close to the fumeroles, there are toxic gasses being emitted all the time that can kill you. I always steer people away from the fumeroles, especially when the wind is blowing the emitted fumes in the direction of the trail. But since I don’t know the exact location of where the body was found, I can’t even speculate on the cause of death. If it was some distance—100 or more meters—away from the fumeroles, I would expect a different cause of death.

It is somewhat surprising that it was not noticed until this date. And the victim’s identity remains a complete mystery.
