Hi, just wondering if anyone may be able to offer any advice about transfers from Zurich airport to Silvretta Montafon (probably Schruns). With 3 kids plus luggage not sure public transport will be that relaxing so ideally looking at some sort of transfer?
Any suggestions on best/easiest way to do this without it costing a fortune! Open to all suggestions (including public transport if not too faffy!)
Thank you

Public transport is probably easiest if your timings work with the trains. Direct train to Bludenz, then change onto the valley train up to Shruns

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Thanks. Had a more detailed look at the trains and for 5 of us would be £350-400 return. Wondering if a transfer or even car hire might work out similarly? Do you know if any local transfer companies? Online search has only found multi national companies.
This is the last piece of my ski holiday plan & trying not to ruin the budget with the transfers

We use Top Transfer for Zurich pick ups - Greta in the office is very helpful.

Public transport works, but with three kids you’re juggling changes and platforms. I went door-to-door instead and used Transfeero for a Standard Van, which covered all the luggage and got us to Montafon without faff. Because driver details arrive a few hours before pickup, coordination is easy even if the flight slips. Worth pricing against rail plus taxis at both ends.

We are going to Schruns Feb half term.Flying to Zurich. There's 10 of us. Am I right in thinking we can't hire a mini bus for 10 no? The options only go upto 8 no.

I've rented a Transit minibus with 9 seats (3 rows of 3) before. Not a huge amount of luggage space at the back for 9 people if all the seats are filled though. They rarely come bigger than that for self-drive from airport locations.
The minibuses generally aren't cheap to rent either, so it might be more economical to have 2 estate cars, or even 3 smaller vehicles and spread the passengers and luggage between them, if you have enough drivers and somewhere to park them.
Or price up a private transfer??
Are you looking to carry skis/boards? You could put two people in a car with the rear seats folded down and pack the space with the longer items, then the other two cars with 4 in each and just the boots filled with suitcase luggage, looking to balance the weight according the vehicle's capabilities (a 100kg guy equals 5x 20kg luggage pieces) and for a more comfortable journey??

@harvey13, you’d need a D1 license for anything over 9 seater.

@Nadenoodlee, Older folk will have that, cant remember the exact dates but think it was around 2000 when C1 & D1 stopped being given to anyone who passed a test. Even so cant imagine many car hire companies will rent out 10 seaters

Ok thanks all.One of our party doesn't drink. In my mind i thought it would be cool to hire say a 12 seater and they could drive us to wherever in the montafon valley, have a couple of beers at the bottom and drive us back to the hotel.Dont think that works, taking into account firstly our luggage and then all the skis when there. We are a group of 5 men and 6 kids. Guess we will just go for the private transfer option and trains/buses in resort. We are old and have D1!

Seems it was 1997 that they dropped the D1 entitlement, so you'd have to be 46 or over or earlier to have a chance of having it!

| If you passed your test for category B or B automatic before 1 January 1997 your licence will already show entitlement to C1, C1E (8.25 tonnes), D1 and D1E (not for hire or reward). |

Just spotted this. You can catch the train from Zürich Flughafen to Bregenz. One change there will take you directly to Tschagguns where you are staying. (The train goes to Schruns from Bregenz every 40 mins or so. Tschagguns is the last stop before Schruns) No need at all for car hire. Before anyone asks me how I know - I‘ve been living in Bludenz for over 10 years now & go skiing/mountain walking in Montafon virtually every week, sometimes every day of the week! When I return from the UK, I always fly via Zürich and take the route I‘ve just described. (Only I get off at Bludenz instead of going further to Tschagguns.) Admittedly, I am bilingual in English & German, but even if you don’t know any German, you will have no problem on the train, as all announcements/route displays are in English. Download the free VVV app and you will have real time access all the connections to and in the Vorarlberg - including to and from Zürich. This will also cover all your connections while in Tschagguns - to neighbouring resorts such as Gargellen or Brand etc. Plus, the VVV app is updated in real time,is easy to use and actually works unlike Moovit!

 You know it makes sense.

@wyeski Your info is a little out of date. Since 2020, the majority of regional trains running across the Vorarlberg from Bregenz terminate in Schruns, not, as before, in Bludenz. So only one change is needed in total (at Bregenz) to get from Zürich Flughafen all the way to Tschagguns bzw Schruns. See my comments on downloading the VVV app for further detail.

Before anyone points out there are other ways of getting to Schruns from Zürich Flughafen other than via Bregenz (via Zürich Hauptbahnhof & Feldkirch: I am well aware of these but they WILL involve more changes than just the one following my suggested route via Bregenz. Again the VVV app is your friend!
