Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Transceivers

Having been an ESF advanced boarder for the last 4 years, I've decided I really shouldn't be boarding now without all the proper back country kit so am now looking to buy tranceiver, shovel and poles for next season. Can anyone advise about best kits/separates to buy? Would be very interested to know snowHead opinions on the snowclaws available. Thanks.

Very Happy

Freestyle,

Do a search on 'transceivers'. There was a very detailed thread not so long ago.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I would go for an alloy shovel - BD do some nice ones with an extendable handle. If you ever attempt to shift hardened debris then if possible you'd carry a bloody JCB hehehe

Any of the Ortovox ones are good.

As for shovel, I got one from the 22 Special Air Service regiment (thanks guys) as my GF dad works at the base. Alloy n free!

If you want the same, try the old army surplus, cheap n good.

For transceivers I would go for the DTS tracker. There are lots of tranceivers out there but the DTS is by far the easiest to use and unless you really know how to search in an avalanche using a search pattern you will take far to long to find a skier/ boarder in need.

We got a great deal at Facewest. Mammut arvas, Da Kine packs, Black Diamond spades, and spikes.

Thanks all. I've used Otovox - do the DTS trackers work in the same way? Puzzled

depends on which Ortovox. X1 or M2 are similar to a tracker. F1 Focus isn't too dissimilar but requires a bit more skill on the part of the user

if you're happy using Ortovoxes, I'd go with them. The only advantage of the Tracker (IMO) is that it is easy to use for single searches - it loses out to my F1 Focus on range and multi-person burials
