Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Tignes: spending a night without accommodation

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I am still planning a ski vacation, and came across a funky problem, the flight I want to take leaves at Sunday morning, and pretty much all the accommodation I could find is booked Sat - Sat. We want to ski in Saturday the entire day, so seems that if take a shared transfers our best option as far as maximizing skiing time is to take a shuttle around 3:30 am between sat and sun.

Is there a reasonable way to spend the first half of the night at Tignes without accommodation?
Optimally something like an enclosed central bus station that we can crash on our bags.

Also I’m less concerned about it, but is there a place to leave our bags during the day? (I assume one can always find a nearby hotel and pay a small fee for holding our luggage)

Not if that airport is Geneva. It‘s closed between midnight and 4am and they don‘t allow you to stay.

@IhaveAchance, transfer out at the end of the ski day (so, around 5pm) and book an airport hotel for the Saturday night.

There's a cheap F1 hotel in Ferney Voltaire - better than sleeping on your bags. It's on the "French side" which means you'll have a bit of a hike into the airport (or pay for a cab) and will need to clue yourselves up how it works.

A quick Google found Alpy Transfers (whoever they are) will sell your a shared transfer to Geneva, leaving Tignes at 0340 on a random Sunday morning in January.

There’s no public space in Tignes for crashing out, the Maison shuts mid evening. So unless you fancy an all nighter in a bar (what could possibly go wrong?!?) a late transfer to GVA and a hotel there.

Better, perhaps, than Ferney, there are a couple of IBISs in Geneva centre.

I have the opposite issue, I don’t have a good way to get to the airport. The only transfer I found that doesn’t shorten the last ski day leaves in the middle of the night from Tignes

Being a high resort, it is very cold during the night in January, I have waited for the first regional bus from tignes Val C to Bourg Saint Maurice, and the pickup point for the bus wasn't snow plowed until 6 am'ish, and it snowed heavy every night, don't know about other pickup points. If BSM train note last train time Saturday and first train time Sunday, maybe a full days skiing on the last Saturday excessive? I planned to ski when I got to BSM, it was heavy rain and wind, half of lifts closed. I took what skiing I had done, and got on the first available train. Note the difference between a regional train, and the tgv? version, the tgv will probably be more convenient but cost more.

@IhaveAchance, bus down to Bourg St Maurice, and a train? Or shorten your ski day a little bit, a cold night in Tignes without a bed will not be pleasant.

There is often a good saving to be made from booking flights on a Sunday instead of the normal Saturday, but you do need to budget for the night in a hotel to make it possible. We have done that a few times.

For you the best bet is probably to get a transfer from Tignes around lift closure time (maybe 5-6) and then stay close to Geneva Airport. There is an Ibis Budget about 3 stops down the tram line (edit, thinking back it was actually a trolleybus) from there which we have used. Otherwise if there is a cheap local bus suitably timed you may be able to find a hotel in Bourg St Maurice and a Sunday morning transfer from there.

(PS Planning to sleep on a park bench in a high altitude ski resort is not recommended).

Nash Hotel or the Ibis hotel next door are both a (fast) 10 minute walk from Geneva Airport. Other (possibly cheaper) options exist but you'll need a shuttle bus for those.

Expect to pay £100 a night for double/twin.

This seems to be the critical point but surely there are transfers out post the skiing day. Not my area of expertise though.

What about night life in Geneva, anywhere you can spend couple of hours of lap dancing in ski boots until airport is open?

Also, they got train station, is it closed at night as well?

Re baggage, the train station is has automatic baggage lockers, but if you got ski bags, its manned only, and it has opening hours (not open at night)

It's been an F1 in the past but @under a new name says it's been bulldozed! Shame, it was a useful cheap stopover and the manager there once gave my sister a lift into the airport because he didn't want her having to walk up that barbed-wire fringed path!

Both sounds better than my plan, but I simply couldn’t find transfers at hours other than 3:30, 5:10 or 14:30.

halfhand wrote:

Yes, I tried Ben’s bus, alpytransfers and Alpybus, none of them seems to offer something that leaves between the end of the ski day and the evening (say 17 - 21).

Maybe as the season approaches there will be more options.

The problematic date is the return on the 27th of Dec

If I’ll reach Geneva for the night I assume I’ll be able to find an hotel, again the problem is more so to reach Geneva in the 27th without leaving Tignes at 14:30 thus making the ski day pretty short

I did after opening the thread, seems like sncf says the last departure of the line from Bourg St Moritz to Geneva is everyday at 16:40. So I assume with the time it takes to get from tignes to Bourg plus some additional extra time lost to imperfect compatibility of the timetables this is affectively the same as taking a shared transfer that leaves at 14:30 from Tignes. (It might lengthen the ski day by half an hour or so but it will probably make me more anxious and nervous)
ski holidays

@IhaveAchance, I'm somewhat surprised that you can't get a later transfer, but I guess that if you consider, say a 17h00 dep. gets you to GVA around 20h00 but the driver won't be back to Tignes until 23h00 earliest max, it begins to be a little more understandable.

And that doesn't account for Saturday traffic.

I fear you may need to forgo your last day skiing.
