Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Antagnod as a base for Monterosa

Hotels availability is starting to get released for our early February trip next year. Plan is to for 3 days in Monterosa (followed by 5 in Aosta).

I'm seeing a few hotels in Antagnod with good reviews that are less than half price from the comparables in Champoluc or Gressoney. Given there's a shuttle that runs quite frequently, I'm wondering why the prices are so much lower... Especially since I'm reading many people in Champoluc travel to Frachey to start their days anyways.

Any thoughts?

@JoeSchmoe, there's not a lot in Antagnod, not sure if there are any bars or restos, and Antagnod is quite a bit further to Champoluc than Champoluc to Frachey ... I reckon it's just a convenience/amenities thing?

Bars aren't really a concern, we're a bunch of old friends that get together once or twice a year and would rather have a few drinks at our rooms at the hotel.

I see there's a few restos, not many, but I think enough for 3 days, especially if we decide to eat in Champoluc right after skiing on one or two days. My guess is lunch will be the focus anyhow.

I'm just trying to get all the facts before making a call on booking. We're coming from Canada and the US, and this will be our first ski trip outside of NA (we've been doing an annual trip for 23 years now). Flight costs are deterring some of the regulars from joining. I'm hoping though if cheap lodging and lift tickets could counter the flights, it could help with the sticker shock.

@JoeSchmoe, good reasons. Fair enough then!

I've never used the buses (we have always had cars if nec. these days we can walk) - but there's one every 30 mins to and from Antagnod which is perfectly workable.

Only poss. downside is that the last bus up is ~18:40 which would limit options and timings for dinner in Champoluc. Most (almost all) restaurants won't open till 19:00 typically. Which is a shame as Le Sapin IMO does world class steaks, if you like that sort of thing.

But as you suggest, lunch is a good focus. It's hard to find bad food on the mountain although finding interesting food's a little trickier. Novez above Champoluc is a stand out. Mossa above Alagna is rather special. But what you will see is that vs. almost anywhere else, teh value for money is exceptional.
