EDIT: now dumping all the way down to the valley (800m), and it's some FAT flakes!
Makes sense considering according to the forecast the max temperature would drop by 11ºC between today and tomorrow |
Yes what was green on webcam Yday is very white down to 700m. At LHR, but not due to ski until tmr. Looks like more snow, wind and lift closures today, but hopefully should be all set for some lovely skiing Fr Sa Su.

@t44tomo, for sure the coming days will be epic as well!
Till this morning in Adelboden about 15cm down the village (800m) and I think almost half a metre up the mountain (~2200m); still snowing and the wind seems to have slowed down. But nearly the whole resort is closed for the whole day, except a smaller sub-resort (Engstligenalp). Seems to be a similar issue in other Swiss resorts according to skiresort.info, though most are at least partially open.

@phillip33, your friend's nuts. Champagne powder requires low pressure and cold temps. So much more likely early season.

Is it too early to ask about the forecast for the Haute Maurienne (Val Cenis) over Easter weekend and the following week? I was hoping the weather wigglies would b favourable but from what I can see it’s looking mild & moist… Have I angered the gods?

@mountainaddict, true but I think the north (and Switzerland I assume) will get a second heavy dump next week
@MotownJunk, it's just got a top up and will have a few days cold which is better at least than two or three weeks of wall to wall sunshine, should be better than average

And a stones throw from the bottom of that is CERN's ATLAS experiment where they found the Hoggs Bosum. While in a safety training course at that CERN Point, I was looking wistfully out of the window at the gondola...

The idea that austria will have successive snorkel weeks and by far the best conditions of the season at the end of March and beginning of april is remarkable
Freezing in the haute maurienne, balaclava on and goggles freezing on outside, mad. Tbh I'd swap for some much needed sun and terraces now.

hahaha same here; the snowflakes were hitting the goggles and immediately attaching to it. You couldn't just wipe them off; you had to take off your gloves and melt them off with your bare hands

Looking forward to next week in Obergurgl with Mrs.tsgsh! Looks like it might be warm (but not particularly so by April standards) and sunny. As a (normally) late December-to-mid-February skier, I'll take that; I don't want to sunbathe, but the contrast in the light helps at my age. At least, I've stopped dithering over whether I need the AM skis over the piste ones: it should all be thoroughly bashed by Sunday.

Nearly knee deep powder in Adelboden this morning (and up to ~15cm on the slope even though they apparently groomed early in the morning), and that even though the forecasts for here were not even that extreme.
I wonder what the resorts that did have more promising forecasts (like Mürren and Engelberg) are looking like

Tuesday was one of the nicest days of the season I think.....with a near empty resort and 10cm light cold snow on top of solid base low down. One thing that I haven't seen mentioned about snow quality is when the snow is at the powder end of the scale, it's so much easier to glide on for longer, important when say navigating new routes through the trees, in between pistes etc....maybe more so on a board when it's easy to get stuck in deep or heavy snow if you don't know exactly where you are going....keeping speed up etc....whereas 10c-15cm light fluff is much more forgiving as you scan for exit gaps in the trees ahead. That was my tuesday....mojo fully restored, as I also switched back to my 10yr old boots and ditched the uncomfortably newish stiff ones that were messing with my head / no control. Top tip, if you buy new boots and leave them in a cupboard for a few years they will revert to factory concrete like stiffness....need to heat mold and break them in again early next season.
Anyway, this well below average cold spell is taking a break over the next week as alps get stuck under a ridge, but those remaining arctic cold pools are still floating around, and may land here again next weekend, 10-13th roughly.
Temporary omega high over france next week
Northern Hemisphere cold pools at mid latitude day 9. My brother lives up state NY and has said they've had snow at sea level all winter, it never melted....not seen in a long time.
So another potential breakdown towards the alps ....with trade mark azores high, uk low, scandi high. Not great agreement yet on the models, some stay mild....about 50/50

@under a new name, getting mixed answers from AI, but they were never properly broken in, not even sure if I got them heat molded, so over time the foam in the liner can harden and plastics in the shell stiffen up. I don’t know, but they hurt now more than ever and have zero flex.
Not seeing much agreement across the models for next weekend, some have lost interest with high pressure sinking over France. GFS one of a few that gets close to 0c but all depends whether that uk low will track SE or NE. Been a good season for this pattern to head SE, but obviously change of season now….becoming less likely with jet moving north and shorter wavelengths.
Latest ECM shows the issue, if highs remain over France then it all fizzles out, but if the lows link up west to east you get an undercut and another cold spell, likely several days to a week
