Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I'm no polo - but from memory Snowforecast uses GFS, Bergfex does its own thing. Looks like there's some northerlies expected next week - GFS 0z has them over the UK but ECM favours the alps. Hopefully that comes true but we'll have to see how it develops.

Back to regularly scheduled programming.. Looks like it's resolving somewhere in between these two - but on a broader scale. Widespread snow for N+E alps coming from Wednesday night - the weekend.

GFS reckons upto 1m in the Arlberg + Salzburg, ECM also adds a hotspot in the Dolomites/Sudtirol. snowHead

Annoyingly wepowder are backing the north specifically, ie austria, I had hoped for gifts for more areas, let's see. Maybe the north will just get the lion's share.

Well, they're expecting quite a bit for Western Italy too

And "a major dump next week" (with maybe half a metre for Austria and Switzerland) - fingers crossed!

Fair. But I'm not headed that way! I think conditions improved in the last while. This sounds cold as well so could be excellent.

It’s all good, I just lose interest every season by the end of January Madeye-Smiley

Any fresh snow in March April is a bonus for me, just need to be even quicker to get out of bed….and it’s still so busy on weekends I start questioning my commitment…..last weekend up there bouncing around on lumpy pistes I was thinking I should get back to pulling up weeds in the potager AND switch back to skiing next season as am fed up with boarding! Dark stuff, I’ll be super keen no doubt again by late August.

Single best source of diy forecasting are the ensemble charts. AIFS, ECM, GFS, GEM in order of accuracy, but glance at all 4. Tight lines and reasonable cross model agreement is all you need, days 5-8 always the key timeframe.

Anyway can see Swiss-Austria in the sweet spot next week but all areas should get something. There has been a regular cycle all season of high pressure trying to form a block across Western Europe, leading to a few dry spells, perfectly normal….but this year it splits easily over uk, allowing the jet to run SE towards alps with a northerly air source……leaving a nicely placed Azores high, med low and scandi high. So plenty of widespread good quality snow followed by cold weather via easterly flow under scandi high. Looks like another spell coming up next week into month end….no sign of above avg temps coming.

So yeah enjoy the rest of this very reasonable season. Maybe I’ll rediscover mojo in autumn, either way plenty of others here with good sources and tea leaf reading skills

@8611, love this time of year....beautiful weather for early gardening prep, interrupted by brief cold and snow

Some visuals of the repeating pattern via latest ECM mean anomaly run

Day 0 NW europe elongated ridge

Day 6 high pressure splits over UK, azores low flips to a high, northerly for alps

Day 9 gap closes, leaving deeper central med low and more of a northerly block....should stay chilly if that comes off

AIFS snow to next weekend

And some interesting charts for early april showing up.....NE flow would keep the snow nice and cold. Often happens in early April as the winter polar vortex is currently collapsing this week / strat warming up....pushing the last arctic cold pools south. Doesn't always affect europe of course....but some of the 2 week charts say there is a chance

Folk at Serve Weather are suggesting a fairly general return to winter from Wednesday, maybe up to 1m in the northern eastern alps and lots in the Balkans.

At this range am more interested in which models handle it better.....not sure I want a -8c early april. Am away again rest of week, missing the thurs dump rolling eyes , so one last chart post I imagine before it comes better into focus

Day10 means ECM GEM GFS

Spot the odd one out.....while all 3 show the same broad synoptic...east atlantic omega-ish blob, GFS has it covering the alps and further E/SE than the other two. The differences are significant in terms of temp / air source as ECM/GEM draw down northerly air while GFS would put the western alps on the warmer side of the jet.....+8c.

Can see it clearly on the ensembles comparing GFS and GEM for 1st week Apr.....even got the crayon out today Very Happy
Almost the entire ensemble sets (Op, Control, mean, and the 30-50 variations) are on opposing sides of the zero line.

So if GFS makes a sudden back flip (wouldn't be the first time).....the more extreme overnight Op runs could come into play, with a ridge towards Iceland and deep cold from the NE

Something like these 3 (again for Apr 3rd, day 10).....probably a 25% chance right now of reaching alps.....could miss to the east or even morph again. Should clear up soon enough.

Well, if the trip is booked in advance, then... yes, kinda. Jan or Feb I think the weather is often settled enugh that the forecasts can help you pack the relevant gear. By Easter, it usually seems so varied that I'll always pack bot hmy lightest outer shell and all the thermals too. Will it be -12 or +12? Probably both during the week...

Very timely indeed, I'm also off to Laax mid next week, and then Easter in Arosa-Lenzerheide; not the highest, most north-facing or snow-sure resort out there, but the one I convinced my colleagues we should go to and everything would be fine... some snow and cold-ish weather would help my reputation!

In Adelboden too; the day started mildly, but around noon the wind (the from west) picked up all the way down to the valley and precipitation started, with a snowline around 1200m. Quite some lift closures though (the wind was intense and skiing against it is QUITE an experience hahaha, like a taste of what paragliding-skiing must feel like).

The wind seems to be slowing down (precipitation too for now), hope it doesn't pick up again to ensure lifts can run normally tomorrow

EDIT: now dumping all the way down to the valley (800m), and it's some FAT flakes!
Makes sense considering according to the forecast the max temperature would drop by 11ºC between today and tomorrow
