I'm staring to plan January's boys (middle aged) trip!
I'm thinking of Oberstdorf as I've been their twice via Memmingen and it's easy to get to. As I recall it has a reasonable mix of slopes. We have 1 confident red skier and the rest less so.
Are there any other resorts in the general area I could consider. Also, is it an OK bet for snow in January?
Criteria is decent hotel, a few places to eat and a mix of slopes for everyone. We did Engelberg this year, which was a great town but didn't really suit us piste wise.

@MustWork, several areas to choose from with pistes for all levels. Söllereck for beginners, Ifen for cruising blues reds & relatively steep black (Olympia Hang). Fellhorn/Kanzelwand for all sorts... The valley runs in Kleinwalsertal also good for beginners...
Alternatives nearby; look at Balderschwang.
Oberstdorf / Kleinwalsertal is one of the most snow sure places in the Alps. It's not called Vorarlberg for nothing. January is normally fine!

Thanks! I think I was just up the Sollereck both times. Can you access more from their or do you need to bus to other lifts? If staying in Oberstdorf itself.

Söllereck is standalone. Need a bus to get elsewhere. The valley areas in Kleinwalsertal Parsennbahn are also great for beginners & cruisers, and connect you from Riezlern all the way to end of the valley at the Walmendingerhorn in Mittelberg. There's also a short bus ride from the Parsenn to the base of Ifen which runs every 10 minutes... what's not to like?
The bus from Oberstdorf to Kleinwalsertal is pretty regular. I think also every 10 mins

Forgot to mention that the area directly in Oberstdorf is the Nebelhorn, but maybe not so good for beginners.

I made my snowboard instructor course there.
Oberstdorf its definitely not for beginnend
Fehhorn or ifen i think are the best
However you have to consider its not so much a week Trip destination but a weekend.
During the weekends its really crowded

@turms2, disagree. I always have a season pass for the area and don't get bored! It's fine for a week. It can get busy with all the Stuttgarters at weekends, but so do all the other areas in Tirol & Vorarlberg

I found Sollereck fine as beginner.
I'm in a tricky position because two of us need fairly easy blues etc and one needs a decent mix of reds. The fourth guy is in between. It's much better if we can all be on the same mountain and meet now and then for lunch. I'll probably get in trouble if their is too much bus travel too !

@MustWork, Söllereck actually has blues reds and blacks, not very black but hey.
Probably Ifen is the place to spend time with your friends. It has a couple of blacks Olympia & Kellerloch, whereby Kellerloch is sometimes not open. Needs a lot of snow to fill the crevases. Has reds and some very cruisy blues. Good restaurants to meet up in.
Fellhorn/Kanzelwand spans Germany and Austria and is mostly reds, good off-piste and long red valley runs on the Austrian (Kanzelwand) side, and the German (Fellhorn) side.
Having said that Nebelhorn is not for beginners, that's not quite the whole picture. Nebelhorn has a couple of blues, but the long runs down to the middle station are quite black! Worth a look anyway. Great scenery!

Honestly i do not find it Boring but i am the man who can Board only on one slope for the whole day. So my opinion is subjektive
Otherwise its so. Every where is busy
I used to Visit the area a lot but its so busy in the weekends that does not worth it any more

@turms2, based in Gauting & Oberstdorf. Wife comes from the end of Kleinwalsertal, so that's the reason for my affinity to the area
