 Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi all,
Long time reader first time poster from Australia.
I’m trying to plan a trip to Alta Badia with the family and would love some advice on the best resort for our family.
My wife doesn’t ski but loves to come up the mountain to enjoy the views and the huts. My three kids are beginners having done 2 seperate week long trips. They can ski the blues and easier reds. I’m an intermediate snowboarder.
I’m currently trying to decide between colfosco and san cassiano. They all look great for beginners with all the blue runs. Where I would appreciate some advice is on which village has the best opportunities for a non skier to come up the mountain for lunch and few drinks?
It looks like she can reach the edelweiss on foot via the gondola, is this the best option if you’re not on skis? Are there better spots for her to come up and meet me and the kids for something to eat and drink?
Both locations look about the same price wise, corvara is a bit out of our price range and there isn’t a lot left to choose from.
Any advice is much appreciated.
Ben

Welcome to snowHeads!
As you said, Colfosco is easy for a non skier to get up the Edelweiss side valley using the gondola, and the Edelweisshütte just across from the top of the gondola does good food. From San Cassiano if you take the gondola up to Piz Sorega there are eating places near the top too.
You didn't say what type of accommodation you're looking for. If you want a self catering apartment then in Colfosco some years ago I stayed at the Alpin apartments which is conveniently located and which I can recommend.
One possible factor in favour of San Cassiano is that it's a short taxi ride to Passo Falzarego from which a cable car goes up to the top of Lagazuoi. At the top of Lagazuoi there are great views and also a mountain restaurant https://rifugiolagazuoi.com/
From the top of Lagazuoi is the start of the very scenic hidden valley run, a great experience but probably best left until the end of your week until your kids have gained more confidence on the easier reds as the entrance from Lagazuoi has a short fairly steep entrance before it then gets easier.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Thanks Alastair Pink,
Those are some great suggestions.
In terms of the accommodation, we are looking for self catering options. I should mention we will also have a car so can drive between the villages during the day.
The kids will join a ski school for the week but plan to ski with them in the afternoons.
Thanks again,
Ben

For ski school I would go for Colfosco
Nursery slopes are next to village.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@Garfield, doesn't sound like they need nursery slopes. The kids are doing easy reds

@Alastair Pink, A real treat would for the family to stay the night at the Lagazuoi Rifugio. We've done it a few times, it's a stunning experience to spend the night above the clouds and the food/service are excellent. Mum could cable car back down and taxi back. Dad and kids can then ski the Hidden Valley which is iconic.

@Mollerski, or if they have a hire car as the OP stated then they could drive to Passo Falzarego, leave the car in the car park there, go up the cable car to Lagazuoi and then when the skiers do the Hidden Valley when they get back to Armentarola (if they take the horse tow) or from Capanna Alpina before the horse tow section they can take a taxi back to Passo Falzarego to collect their car and the non-skiing Mum who as you said can take the cable car back down.

I'm trying to think where other than Eidleweiss? Dantercepies wouldn't work due to chairs and gaps between lifts. She could take the two way gondola to Corvara I suppose, but then what? Boe up and down?
