Off in the distance in the vastness of the North Pacific ocean a low pressure is born. It's going to slowly crawl across the Gulf of AK and build up some energy and cold air and then introduce itself to the Coast Range of BC before making its acquaintance with the Cascades and then mozy on over to the Tetons, the Wastach and Colorado Rockies sometime middle of next week. Bringing with it the gift of snow. How much is too early to say. Stay tuned.

Numerous Colorado ski areas opened this weekend. Talking with family in the burbs of Denver, they received 8 inches of snow yesterday and more coming later this week.
Things are starting to shape up and become clearer for the low pressure moving ashore on the PNW Sunday through mid-week. Already snowing lightly here in the Central Cascades. Wednesday is the day for large accumulations. Whistler-Blackcomb looking at up to 40cm. Similar amounts for Mt. Baker.
Storm totals for interior Mountain west locations in the 20cm range anticipated.

I'm heading to Sun Peaks for US thanksgiving for a nice easy piste skiing warmup to the season. Not expecting much from the conditions but they're trending in the right direction.

My location is probably quite confusing.. but I'm also in Seattle having moved here in September from SF after one too many 12+ hour trips to Tahoe.
So closer to 5-6 hours conditions permitting!

@driz, ha, funny, now I get it. Also funny: I get to Tahoe in 12 hours from Seattle...but midweek, in spring. I've done the crawl up Echo and Donner from SF, not much fun. Have a gas at SP, and if you haven't tried Silver Star, highly recommended.

Great forecast for the next week or more. While we wait, many know that Mt. Bachelor is being sold by Powdr corp, and that a local group is trying to buy it as well as, presumably, Vail or Alterra (my money is on Alterra). Whomever gets the prize, they'd better come with cash. Check out the ages on the primary lifts (except Sky, replaced last year, and Cloud, still young):

Ugh. Not sure about replacement cost; my sense of it is $4-7million each.

Won't be up there for opening day, but it should be really good. I hope they decide to open up more terrain soon with the recent foot plus that has fallen in the past 24 hours. Good start to the season.

@Toadman, did they mow anything, like Olympian? I'm going next Friday even if its IFR, would be good to know what's there if I can't see it. Decent wall of snow there on the side, nice. La Niña is delivering...so far.

@Scooter - yes, they actually had groomed Thunderbird under Pine as well. But that means going over to Little Pine to get back to Skyliner. Overall, the coverage is really good. Over 5 feet of total snow fall so far. They are still getting staffed up with the plan for full lift ops on Nov. 29th. More snow incoming on Sunday evening -Wednesday.

Several inches of precip. through Wednesday. Could add up to 3 plus feet in the BC Coast range and Northern Cascades, possibly 2 plus feet in Northern Idaho. Later in the week Sierras will see snow at higher elevations ~8k feet. Utah and Colorado resorts will see smaller totals. Fantastic start to the season.

Walked the dog last night in a squall. Lasted about an hour and dropped an inch of fresh on the ground. The roads are icy and slick this morning in Central Oregon. Much, much more on the way. Currently stormy and snowing from the North Cascades to the Sierra's.

KILLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — American ski racer Mikaela Shiffrin was alert and being evaluated for injuries after crashing in her second run of a World Cup giant slalom race Saturday, doing a flip and sliding into the protective fencing.
Shiffrin stayed down on the edge of the course for quite some time as the ski patrol attended to her. She was taken off the hill on a sled and waved to the cheering crowd. The U.S. Ski Team said she was taken to a medical clinic for evaluation.
The 29-year-old Shiffrin was leading after the first run of the GS and charging after her 100th World Cup win. She was within sight of the finish line, five gates onto Killington’s steep finish pitch, when she lost the grip on her outside ski. She hit a gate and did a somersault before sliding into another gate. The fencing slowed her momentum as she came to an abrupt stop.
Reigning Olympic GS champion Sara Hector of Sweden won in a combined time of 1 minute, 53.08 seconds. But her thoughts were instead with Shiffrin.
“It’s just so sad, of course, to see Mikaela crash like that and skiing so well,” Hector said on the broadcast after her victory. “It breaks my heart and everybody else here.”

The Pacific Northwest is getting hammered right now....a foot yesterday, a foot today, a foot tomorrow. Mt Bachelor claims the deepest base in the country (87" base; 178" ytd). Not all sweetness though: by my count, eight days in a row with significant lift closures due to wind, rime or both. Tahoe also getting it; not much at Whistler. If you are considering a West Coast trip, this is a good year to go for it.

We've been measuring 2.5m depths, albeit not resort based. In Blue River we've been getting 20cm a day or there abouts, and the stability is surprisingly good. I'm not claiming expertise, but I think that's because it's been warmer than usual, so we had some upside down stuff and the consolidation's generally been good. It's cooling down a bit now, mind, so that could change.

It's basically been snowing daily since Dec. 23rd in the Cascades. Mt Bachelor seems to have become a snow magnet. Unfortunately, the temps have been in the upper 20's to right around freezing. So, the snow has been on the denser side. Good for building the base, which is right at about 100" at Bachelor and similar at Timberline. It looks more like mid-February with about 10' of snow on the sides of the hwy up to Bachelor. Looks to be more on tap after this week's long funnel of moisture moves East.

Fresh snow to start the new year. Total snowfall at Bachelor 222 inches/563cm. Not a bad start to 2025.
