It is very serious according to a buddy who lives there. Looks like 70 apts destroyed. He was quaffing an ale outside Base Camp and the could fell the heat from the fire maybe 150m away. Thank goodness it appears there were no casualties.

Seems to have spread through a modern building very rapidly.
Surely modern fire systems (presumably fitted ?) should prevent that?

@brianatab, I used to live in that building and I wouldn't call it modern, and pretty sure there were no fire systems aside from smoke alarms. There are definitely no sprinklers. I currently live in a building of a similar age and I'm not even sure we have smoke alarms (I best check, and put a rope on my balcony for an escape!)
I saw the fire start last night and walked up to take a look and it spread insanely fast through the roof of the building. It's all wood I assume and it just ripped through. It was still smouldering this morning. I don't think there was anything the fire fighters could do.
Amazingly, no one was injured or killed. However for the town it is bad news. BSM already has a housing crisis and these apartments were cheap and often rented for seasonal workers. That will put more strain on the rental market here which is already messy.
I imagine a couple of people on here probably own apartments in there. I hope they weren't effected, it looks like it spread into 3 blocks but a couple were spared.

@timlongs, we had a large, modern block of flats (<10yr) burn like that in Meylan last summer - the fire skipped along the roof then down into the buildings. The fire was started by arsonists lighting a bin next to the building.
And a newish school went up when the solar panels caught fire, about 100 meters away from the first fire.
I think brand spanking new buildings are a bit better as regulations have tightened up a bit... but maybe not gerry built ski lodges. Certainly a lot of hotels have done work over the last 5 years.

I booked one of the (burnt) apartments for a week in summer. The owner emailed me last night to say his block has gone. Luckily it was done through AirBnB. Sad times.

A lot of passive fire protection is about providing time to evacuated safely, not completely prevent spread. And as the construction industry is being made painfully aware, the nuances of how materials are tested to be certified are often far stricter than how they end up being used or installed in the real world.
