Thanks everybody for all of your advice. It has really helped me devise my plan.
My plan is to stay in St Anton very close to the lifts.
First day I will ski st Anton, second day I will drive to ski lech and the day 3 I’ll chose whichever I preferred.
I’m not too worried about the difficulty in St Anton because I also have 4w booked in France in Jan to improve (I’d currently class myself as a confident intermediate).
Any tips on where to find the quieter pistes in St Anton are much appreciated.

Beer in the Murrmel was around 7 euros for 500ml last year, for either weissbier or stieglbrau. Not the cheapest place in St Anton, but definitely not the most expensive either. The Moose/KK were around 8 euros for the same if I remember correctly. Free live music from 5-8.30 in the Murrmel too, most nights it's Gunar with another singer (Dave ?) on his two nights off. |
€7 is less than a pint in the West End! Reports last year had suggested it was getting expensive, clearly not. I prefer somewhere quieter these days so had not been in though saw Gunnar (and his new sidekick) was still going strong.

@Astontech, The villages are all linked so no need to drive around though helps if you want to get to Warth. Dont miss out on Zürs the best (and often quietest) pistes in the Arlberg.

If you're a confident intermediate you'll be fine, I wouldn't even rate myself as that!
Pretty sure murmel was still over €8 a beer btw, and spirit mixers are extremely expensive in the Arlberg for some reason.

Thanks, just found it https://www.sevenrooms.com/experiences/gspusilech
I will be there in December, looks like a sure crowd pleaser. Plenty of folks in Strolz boots probably.
The Apres at Krone were rather solid last years I've been there (in March)
A la carte lunch till 14:30, Austrian loud apres ski from 15:00

@drporat, nice one. Heading to Oberlech in January and whilst I love Lech, it do miss some jumping apres. Will see how this lands otherwise it may need a couple of trips to St Anton to get my fix. Does anyone know if Gunar playing again this year?

@boabski, Why did you not book up in St Anton instead of Lech then? I've stayed in both and much prefer staying in St Anton. However probably the best skiing (or at least best piste skiing) is in/around Zurs.

Decided to treat ourselves and stay at the Montana. Stayed there around 18 years ago and is still the best food I've had anywhere. I've stayed in St Anton 9/10 times. Going as 2 couples and my wife's knees probably would not withstand the slopes around Anton either.

@boabski, Gunar still features on the website, so I assume yes. I believe he is semi retired now and only does the winter season in St Anton. Last bus back to Lech is around 19:00 so easy enough to do the rounds of Arl One, KK & Moose and make it back to Lech. Slopes should be fine in January, the big piles of soft snow should not be in evidence so less stress on knees.

@munich_irish, awesome. I know he retired a couple of years ago but was short lived. He's part of the St Anton fabric for me and good to know we can get a bus back for dinner

I actually remember seeing Gunnar play once in Lech in 1998 or 1999. Was in what is now Don Enzo, the Italian restaurant. Think it was during dinner, not in the afternoon.
Came as a surprise, after seeing him for some years in the St.Anton Postkeller.
Oh dear, how old we are....

Hi all,
I’m staying in Lech for a week in January and am looking for the best value equipment rental in town.
Ideally, the rental shop would be centrally located and allow us to store our skis and boots over night.
Cheapest I’ve seen for mid level skis and boots so far is about €280 for the week. I have checked with our accommodation to see if they partner with any shops to offer discount.
Thanks in advance for any tips you can provide!

@fox15,
It depends where exactly your acco is, and which piste will be your last of the day: Schlegelkopf or Schlosskopf. Which acco are you in?
Several Intersport shops across town, these offer best prices, with one close to Schlosskopf lift, one next to Rüfkopfbahn, and one opposite Schlegelkopf
Strolz is high-end, near Schlegelkopf
Sportalp is in between and right next to the central Schlegelkopf piste
SkiBex, opposite Oberlechbahn. A fairly new one, since a few years. Not sure about their prices.
I know Sportalp and Strolz offer storage, not sure about Intersport and SkiBex. There also is a storage next to the Schlosskopf lift

@fox15, the words "Lech" & "discount" are rarely found in the same sentence! There is a cheaper place in St Anton & in Pettneu. If you are driving then potentially you could stop off in Bludenz or at the rental place at the bottom of the Sonnenkopfbahn at Wald which might offer cheaper hire. The places mentioned in Lech are likely to charge very similar amounts. I would have thought all the sports shops would offer storage, most accommodations will have a deal with one of the sports places for storage (unless they are right next to the piste).

Thanks for your replies,
I’ll likely just use an intersport in the center of town, they offered the best prices I’ve found, including storage.
Strange how much more equipment hire is in the Arlberg, compared to other major resorts in Europe

@fox15, Especially in Lech but also generally in the Arlberg you have to compare prices with Verbier, Zermatt and Val d'Isere which will all be top end. My experience is that you get top end kit to go with the prices.

@fox15, Intersport is fine. But Sportalp is by far the most comfy. You can virtually ski in to the storage.

Bit of a random one, and I dunno where is the best place to post this... For Xmas day is there a 'best resort' you've been to in the ski tirol area? I'll be out in Austria and was wondering if I could make it particularly special by driving to one of the ski tirol resorts on the pass for a special day of quick skiing, and a nice lunch.
I assume they'll all be pretty similar, but if anyone has a memorably wonderful Xmas eve/day in a resort please feel free to share

@badatbetting, By repute (never been as ski area is small & low) the village of Alpbach is supposed to be "prettiest" ski village in Austria. Though I would assume its not a lot different from many other villages, onion domed church, traditional houses etc with picture postcard scenery on a bluebird day after snowfall. I guess you dont think the new KK will offer enough Christmas spirit

Would you recommend I get some food and cook a meal for myself on the 24th then, and just treat 25th as the usual apres day?

Samnaun to Schröcken (new lift next year) in a day would probably need helicopter assistance or an overnight at one end or other, but can see that the various families in the Stanzertal & Paznauntal would see the money making opportunities writ large, ski passes €120 a day? My understanding is that it was the villagers in Pettneu who played the key role in opposing the link between Rendl & Kappl, the Malfontal is part of the parish / Gemeinde of Pettneu
Yes the 24th is "big" day though in my experience it is really from about 16:00 onwards (banks dont close in Bavaria) with carols round the tree in the village square and then folk going home for family dinners, 25th is just a normal public holiday. Turkey can be difficult to find, Goose more common in these parts. If you want roast Turkey best option is to drive it from UK

How different was mooserwirt back then? I can't really picture how the layout could be different to what it is now?
What even has changed in st Anton? Wasn't it just more bars/parties, and has become more upmarket?
