@comish, have stayed at the Hubertushof twice but years ago c 2010 and maybe 2018. Both times we loved it. You can get an elevator to and from the slopes I still get the occasional email from them but wasn't aware of new owners but after a quick look on the website the old owners don't appear on it, which they did previously. Stuben is handy for good access to the middle of the region but not much happening at night time.

@munich_irish, There is a book available at the tourist office written some years ago by a very knowledgable local historian, Hans Thoni, he researched all the village names, houses from local public records. There are the names above you mentioned that are originals, but also after the tunnel building some new ones were added when some of the workers settled there.

Alber Family were very late to the party..They were just retailers who moved in !
The church ..... I think it's quite fitting St Anthony is the patron saint of this village's church - as among other things, he is well known for being the patron saint of Jagermeister.... if only ! however he is known for being being the saint of lost items and lost souls or as i like to believe in the winter - phones and skibums.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@Langerzug, There was a barrier in place mid 70s, by the Alte Post, if memory serves me. It was a manual himged horizontal pole.
@stanton, just looked through the booklet about the church history and noticed that the parish priest from 1919 to 1935 was Kaplan (chaplain) Karl Alber. The Albers must have been around for some time and not just as shopkeepers.

Is it too early or too late to book? I'm debating going to Lech again week 8 or last week of March, and available accommodation is not plentiful.
After all it is free
After all it is free
@scr, Week 8 is Carnaval/mid-term/Fasching, and one of the busiest in the last few years.
Apart from that: Lech traditionally has many returning guests, with hotels waiting for their confirmations until August. So possibly availability in September is better.
But the last week of March actually should be a quiet week...

@Langerzug, Thanks for the information! I will hold off until September then.
Yes, week 8 is going to be busy. That's the downside of having kids in school.

I see a separate KK thread been started in another Topic .. Someone direct them over here !!
It has been known about for a few seasons... The building is very old , the hill is moving slightly and everything else on it including lifts. Remember the Kandaharbahn slip sliding away?
The Surveyors were actually in the KK with their theodolites doing their work during a full on Apres Ski (the season just after the covid winter ) The plans have been publicly available for around 2 years , more land has been acquired ..
Was great to watch the old Downhill course from there... Skiers flying of the access road jump .. Wish they bring back that course !!!
22 October 1997 was the (decision) day the town changed forever.... i,e Into One Giant Super Hotel
The photo show's the old railway and the final traject for new Southern Railway Route ...
Nassereinbahn did not exist ...
See if you can spot the other differences ??

@stanton, the Gampen funicular is on the photo.
As for the downhill jump at KK, it was known as the 'Pylon jump'; racers, on taking off, looked as they were headed into the structure!
It was shown in the 1960s film "Downhill Racer" featuring a young Robert Redford and Gene Hackman. The film features the St Anton downhill along with the Hahnenkamn, Val D'Isere, etc. as the plot follows a fictional downhill season.

@stanton, More land was not aquired, kk was not slipping down the hill and the plans were not publicly available except to affected parties.
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

The replacement of the tracks and the station as such was a good idea I think.
It's just that they designed this uglier than ugly new train station!

I live in Basel CH but also have winter home down valley (in sun spot with perfect view of the valley eastwards & Venet peak ) for over 30 years..
So I am across the border in the Stanzertal for at least 5-6 months .. In total seasons 40 this year !!
How man do you need to qualify?
You come to Arlberg for the skiing first.. That has not change exceept the Piste skiing has been made much easier ... Off Piste nothing has changed except the snowfall ..
The Apres Ski & Nightlife has changed enormously i,e Died . ..
The only thing St.Anton can claim as unique in Apres Ski .. Its the only area with Apres Ski actually on the mountain until the evening 20:00hrs. .. but then this is not as late as it used to be ,,,
in the 90's between Gries Dorstrasse & the old Taxi Rank (where the new Rendlbahn stands ) there were no less that 15 Apres bars & Night Clubs (i need to check actually how many as it could of been more
It was bottle to throttle month after month hike and earn your turns .for the best POW.
Four hours sleep a night was a luxury
Nowadays St.Anton is trying to model itself on the Aspen of the Alps.
If you only want to party there are far better lively areas nowadays .. i.e Ischgl, Mayrhofen, etc.
Yesterday I saw a long range weather report and it was from the same source who back in January predicted a very Warm (multiple heatwaves) European Summer this year..
The source is predicting very low snowfall in early Winter (Oct Nov,Dec ) in the Northen Hemisphere inc USA Europe ..
IT is all based on the Northern Hemisphere Jet Stream
I will try to find the article again and post this week..
@stanton, pulling up the kataster just shows what a complicated jigsaw of parcels of land there are there going back historically for some years, but believe me, no land was aquired. I could explain it, but i think that goes beyond what is required in an internet forum.
Needless to say it is being rebuilt on a larger scale as no doubt will be the price list for drinks.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

You dont have to , I know exactly how it works in Austria from personal experience but luckily, my ex (Viennese) was invaluable in this before anything was available online

Owning a SPAR Franchise (Dutch Company ) will become even more lucrative !!!
@drporat, @scr, Last year it was all hush hush with no official listing on the price list. The thought was it was only going to be available for in person purchase. I was there on the opening weekend, handed in my id and also a weekend ticket from the previous year (expecting to reclaim my €5 deposit). To my astonishment not only did I get the oldies discount but an additional €100 off as a "Stammgaste" ie returning visitor. It turned out the tickets were available for purchase online too. Legally the tickets cant be restricted to local residents but can be restricted to in person purchase. The early purchase prices are very good value (if anything Arlberg related can be described as such) for me less than 9 days covers the cost, even standard ones its less than 10 days.

@davidthornton, That's awesome, so different then, no rendl, no schindler, valfagehrbahn, arlenmahder, nassereinbahn. The queues for galzig and valluga ! - I'd be so interested to know how many skiers they had on the mountain each day then compared to now.

@hsdee, I was there in '73, I think, when Rendl gondola mark 1 opened. i remember big queues for Galzigbahn in the mornings but pistes not so busy. Only lift up beyond Galzig was the Vallugabahn 1 and 2. There was a T bar roughly where Zammermoosbahn runs. A small cable car ran up from St Chris to Galzig. Gampen/Kapall and Stuben/Albona chairs completed the system.
I think I've remembered it correctly; but they do say that if you can remember the 1970s you weren't there!
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Also No Rip Off Hospiz Alm !
There used to be a massive line for the old St Christoph Bahn Cable Car As ski Bums we used to hangout in the old small Stube (the employees hosing now Hit the Sky Hotel) Then hop the last Maiensee T Bar (with the Lifties) and then take the old ski route back to KK/Moos ...as it was faster than taking the 2nd T Bar to Galzig and skiing down from the there.
There were a lot less Skiers, Thin Skis, No Helmets !! ..The Piste's were also alot narrower & the did not carpet groom the entire mountain... Something they should seriously cut back on now so St Anton can become special once again.
GTOOMING = UBER Confidence , Speed and Many Many more accidents (often serious and worse)...
@davidthornton, That is impressive rather beats mine from Ski Amade (3-Täler-Schischaukel as was) and La Plagne & Val d'Isere from the mid 1980's.

@Stanton, and everyone, - after your you tube link you may well enjoy this one - it's about the austrian instructors, many from anton who went to teach in usa, pre and post ww2, incredible documentary from a renowned ski historian. - youtube.com/v/O0IISd6XoBs?si=nA4flG0PeEjPPNhs
I've skied loads of Austrian (and other) ski areas, big and small, over the years by just turning up and buying a day ticket. This has included great end of season trips to St Anton. Until the last 4 or 5 years it felt affordable to do that.
It doesn't now at €81.50 for a single day. The €100 Austrian day ticket is on its way...

@mountainaddict, If you are over 64 its cheaper to ski in the Arlberg than SkiWelt! €75 a day ticket as opposed to €76 in SkiWelt. Though you are correct that €100 a day is not too far away. I remember whinging when it got to €50 a day!
After all it is free

If you just want a solid (few runs) 2hr max out You can do it for €45 per day . Get on first lift and be back to hand in your ticket for refund before the ticket lines appear...
You can do Rendl (top of Gampberg) Galzig & Schindler and if your lucky Kapall in this time period ..
08:45-1045 .. Ticket must be handed back before the 2hr deadline
Timing is imperative..
