Thanks folks. Despite at least 10 visits to the region I've never skied Sonnenkopf - plan to do it this year. Won't have a car although there is an outside chance my mate might be driving over with his campervan - hope he does as it saves us with ski carriage etc

Going to have to write my email to the Austrian embassy very soon, then its time to pray about getting accepted... However I am on one heck of a glastonbury comedown
Whilst doing that I was looking at my emails with various potential accommodation providers last season. It has reminded me that @stanton's expectations are wayyyy too high, I was offered lots of central accommodation for €30k+, they did look stunning however! But personally not worth it in my eyes, maybe if you were in a group of 4-6
@badatbetting, €30K+ for the season in the centre (walking 10mins ) is about right for non-residents (Tourists) it can be a lot more..
Like I said you can do it a lot cheaper as a Tourist if you follow what I said previously but it sounds like your quite well of with money to burn ..
Ive known ski bums who have booked late night train tickets to Salzburg (to keep warm and wash up) then jumped over to the train going the other way back to St.Anton arriving around 08:00
Then you can post your own questions or snow reports...

Wait, for the whole season they jumped on a train to Salzburg, washed in the bathroom sink, and then got a train back to st Anton?!? I think it's insane but I love it.
After all it is free

@stanton, did they do it with an interrail pass?

@badatbetting,
- better get yourself booked up for snowbombing.
-30k for a 2or3bed, centrally located, modern and well appointed does not surprise me. There are wealthy dutch, germans taking some of these for the season even though they won't be there for half of it. You should get your visa, i know people who've got this every year.
@boabski, Definitely treat yourself to a day at sonnenkopf if the weather looks ok and there's been some fresh snow and it's not
the weekend.
@stanton, I know someone who camped in the forest the whole season !

Is camping in the forest uhhhh for lack of a better word.... safe?! I feel like fancy sleeping bags can only produce so much heat... and the risk of drunkenly doing it sounds sooo dangerous! I guess using the gym facilities would allow you to shower however.
I was at glastonbury and 5 days in a tent was enough for me!

@badatbetting, That was quick, hopefully a good sign. I assume you have not used @stanton, as a reference!
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

Haha I wonder how famous @stanton actually in the Arlberg area... I'm not sure if his name will get me free drinks, or barred
You know it makes sense.

Some seasons ago (maybe pre year 2000 I forgot ) . A young person (drunk) after a long Apres & Night in one of the bars in town, was reported missing the following morning by friends but overnight there had been a good dump (0.3-5M) of snow in town ..
They assumed the missing person had fallen asleep and been buried under the new snow l..
They had to call out the Civil Guard & Army with dogs & probe (snow) the whole town (private car park, gardens )
It turned out that this was to be this persons last Apres Ski ever...Amen.. ..

@DPL, I just found Friedl Pfeifer's book 'nice goin' on internet archive website, can be read online. A window into skiing in St Anton pre ww2, before ski lifts, followed by his flee from the german occupation and subsequent achievements in helping to create Aspen as a ski area.

@stanton, It was 03/04 - very sad, very young german lad 18, Christmas or New year celebration went tragically wrong after a night out found his way into the river and not home. There was a lot of snow that week.

They are not doing a total rebuild just renovations ..
Talking of restaurants, correct me if i'm wrong, but I think Gletscherblick hotel restaurant just received St Anton's first michelin star though I expect I'll be sticking with burger stop's disa - wait for it - stars. ta dum.
...would not be surprised this lift will be constructed next summer...
Indeed..
Things happen very fast after the legal's are cleared
10 Person Gondola..
Can expect a lot more development (accommodations) in Schröcken in coming in years.. Many who bought into soe of the new plots during the planning stages have done financially very well..Incidentally many of Dutch & Belgium's are heavily invested in the village
After visiting 8 out of 10 years, it's been a decade since my last visit!?!? Living in the W. US, having kids become ski racers and needing to train at our home mountain, and life will do that.
Looks like I get to return 1st week in February with a bunch of geezers Dad who is >80 wants one more trip to the Mooserwirt! Anyone with any recent suggestions on hotels that will do single accommodation and have half-board? Not looking to break the bank, but can afford more than the typical B&B of my past life.
Also open to ski school instructor suggestions should it snow, for another trip off the Valluga / some exploring that ends at taxi's. I have missed it all! Psyched to return.
Praying for snow!

@comish, I think you will find a few changes though the Moose is the same as ever. "Value for money" accommodation is not easy to find and prices have shot up in the past five years. Multiple single rooms are probably only going to be found in the larger hotels, none of which are in the Budget category. Assuming you want the centre of the village both the Post and Sport Hotel are fine (you can find last minute deals but unlikely in February), I would give the Nassereinerhof a miss, rather tatty and overpriced (even by St Anton standards!). I have seen good comments about Hotel Kirchplatz and Hotel Dr. Otto Murr but not stayed in either. I often stay in Pettneu, it is very easy to get to St Anton, a few bars & restaurants in the village which is fine unless you want late night drinking. Mostly small places so not so good for multiple single rooms but there is the Alpina which is fine, though like most places not the cheapest, there are some other larger hotels but never stayed in any of them.
One thing I have noticed in the past couple of years is how the age profile of visitors is higher than in the past (me included!) you wont be alone in wanting to revisit a misspent youth! Also more visitors from N America probably as a result of a few days skiing in the Arlberg now covered by one of the US season passes.
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

Yeah, unfortunately we are on the Ikon pass. Got 7 days in the Dolomites last year included. 3 days on the Epic (which is the one good in the Arlberg if booked through certain hotels) doesn't do much for me. Even with at least 4 days at another Epic resort for kid ski races, I still won't be near break even. Luckily they have race parent tickets...
Anyone ever stay at Hotel Karl Schranz? Any reviews of it?
You know it makes sense.

@comish,
FYI
Hotel Karl Schranz is up a long steep road from Town. There is a Ski/Night Bus Stop Line 3 loop (right outside) ...
Karl is still around (86-87yrs.)

Yup, aware of the location, thanks.
I have stayed up near there before. With the morning shuttle to the lift it usually works out fine. Either a shuttle, bus, or cab back after skiing or Moosserwirt is fine with us.
We r fine having a few drinks after skiing then head back for dinner and pass out and get up early to do it again crew. No need for night life, I'm there to ski, find pow, and maybe dance on a table or 2.
I'm sure my dad will make friends with Karl since he is 82 and still going. Skied 80 or 90km one day last yr in the Dolomites.
Thx!

@comish, Your father should be eligible for a discount on his lift pass, about 50%, he will need to show his passport to prove his age when he buys his ticket. Not sure that would apply in the Moose but no harm in asking

Yeah, he skis for free at home since over 80 is free. He is good at taking advantage of those things. When people find out his age they usually lose it.
He was surfing 10' waves in Fiji last November and was told he was oldest visiting surfer they have hosted at a rather famous surf resort. Good example for all of us! Keep going!

Anyone have any info on the change of hands of Hotel Hubertushof in Stuben? Seems like they have some rather unfavorable reviews in the last year or two? We were gonna stay there a decade ago, but I had to break my collarbone in Serfaus (damn lack of snow...) and it's always seemed like a nice hotel, but the change in hands and poor reviews have me thinking...
@comish, of location mammoth lakes, i fondly remember a season there many moons ago, very different from St Anton.
Karl Schranz is a lovely hotel, Karls daughter Anna looks after it now, mum and dad are still around to chat with, there is a bus stop directly outside, 5 mins to village, 10 mins return. Beautiful views and sunshine on that side of the mountain too.
Don't know too much about staying in Stuben but prices there shot up in the last years, apres post hotel has a great terrace, when the weather is good, for lunch and a very nice bar & stube. They moved the main lift so now you have to walk about 30 metres further, i know ! and the small albona 2 that allowed one to do laps of the top is no longer a thing.
Mooserwirt, and the playlist, you will recognise again immediately like you never left.
instructors - you can take private instructor / guides - expensive but not as expensive as top US resorts. Look to Arlberg Schishule and Piste to Powder (who also have group spaces on guiding days) - There are some independent operators too plus village ski schools like Pettneu. New Generation mainly focus on lessons but they also have one or two excellent private guides and AZ classic are the opposite - lots of excellent private guides and not group lessons. Be sure to say what it is you want from an instructor day because if it's an off piste taxi back adventure you'll need someone appropriately qualified.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

The Year they moved the Railway .. Was the Year the Town Lost its Soul..
Apres Ski & Nightlife as we knew it also died on that day...
@stanton, The route of the old railway line (for those that don't know it's the art mile path from pizza/kebab in nasserein, past the swimming pool, lovely old station building and past the rendl ticket office) was never supposed to have been built where it was in the start of the 1880s. It was the intervention of the then Postmeister, an important job in those days when the post was taken over the arlberg pass by horse and carriage, who happened to also be the mayor, who also happened to have a small guesthouse by location of the post hotel, which was then built in the 1890s (entrance annex) and 1927 (big triangle extension) who then being being a smart and practical man realised if he had the train station next to his hotel then.... and that is why the original train station was next to the hotel post and not south of the village near the tunnel where it was originally planned to go anyway. (Thats why an incredibly straight tunnel has a bend just as it enters st anton)

@hsdee, I assume the Mayor / Postmaster / hotel owner was the Patriarch of the Alber family
@stanton, Looking backwards it does appear that something has been lost, images of steam trains chuffing past happy folk on skis. In reality having noisy freight trains clunking through the middle of the village day and night was not conducive to modern tourist infrastructure. St Anton was never Wengen or Arosa where the trains are part of the whole image. Of course it gave lots of opportunities for the village families to build more hotels!

@munich_irish, You know what assumption did
The present owners have had it since early 80s, way back then the prominent family was Schuler, hence they have some streets named after them. Some of them can be found in the St Jacob cemetary. But it was they who persueded Hannes to stay in the village and open his ski school from their hotel in 1907, a Schuler was a founding member of ski club arlberg, organiser commitee of the big 1928 AK race.
