Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

UCPA Flaine, la Plagne or Valloire - Christmas / new year family week

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
For a family of 4 skiers with kids age 9 and 13…… booking UCPA for the first time….. which of these 3 would you recommend?
Flaine
La plagne
Valloire
?
We have skied several times before. Kids happy on blues. Older one secure on reds. Needs to perfect technique before going harder.
Did not ski in 2024/25 season. So desperate to get out there over the festive break.
I want value for money.
I would prefer separate sleeping space from my kids but can cope if that is not possible.
We skied in VT last year and had a small apartment where the kids had a bunkbed room and we had a sofa bed. Worked well for us. But UCPA looks better value for money….. and I’d rather not self cater this year if possible.
TIA!

I don't think you would get a separate room for the children, usually reserved for two-people families for UCPA family weeks.

I'd pick Flaine or La Plagne for December skiing. Both good options. Flaine is a shorter transfer if that matters to you.

Assuming it's Plagne Centre UCPA (there's also one at Plagne 1800, I think), the rooms are nicer (and bigger) than Flaine. Both communal spaces are nice.

I'd assume snow should usually be better in la Plagne, too. The only downside for me would be the longer transfer if you're flying.

Both Flaine and la Plagne have plenty of suitable terrain for your kids.

I've never been to Valloire.

@kat.ryb, what's a two-people family?

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

At Christmas you want trees.

Any reason for not self catering?

How much do you UCPA charge you? It's a bit restrictive.

We have been to Flaine and La Plagne. Flaine we have had both a room of 4 and 2 adjoining rooms of 2 (much better) and in La Plagne it was a room of 4. You just "get what you get". Loved both, Flaine has a lot more UK places for the dates we wanted to go so was a lot easier to get into.

I think for the 4 of us incl accommodation, food and ski pass it is about £4k

What would you suggest instead? I was considering avoiding self catering to reduce time lag between skiing and eating !!! With kids in tow much easier to have someone else prep and provide!

@SirCharles, you should be able to get an apartment and lift pass for about £2k leaving plenty of potential with food to beat that £4k.

Here is my TR from last Christmas with costings.

Our routine when coming back from skiing is to have tea, juice, pastries, cakes, biscuits - or maybe salami and cornichons. Then everyone starts to shower. And whichever me or the wife goes first, starts to cook (accompanied by beer/wine). We will usually have some music going. And it's a pretty relaxed affair. Later we might have a cheese course while playing board games. We prefer it because you can slob around and have a flexible schedule. But I understand some people find having to cook a real chore.

Don't UCPA/Action Outdoors include kit hire and tuition in the price?

Thanks for this link. Super helpful.
We prefer to drive and are tempted to self cater again. Means being organised!!!!!

Last Easter husband pre made and froze a fish pie and a moussaka which were brilliant.
One night we got a cooked chicken.
So def do’able.

Will have a look at the agency you use. Thanks for that. Super helpful.

My daughter and family (two adults, two kids) did Christmas at UCPA La Plagne a couple of Christmasses ago and found it excellent. They had a family room. They found the food good, (despite kids being fussy eaters) and the ski in/out position superb (piste going right under the building). Their costs included lift passes. They drove, which greatly reduced costs.
