Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Norway - is it worth it?

Hello again snowHead snowHead happy Easter to all. I'm planning 2026 trips and I'm looking at something different as NA may not happen now. I looked at doing a night in Oslo then 5 days snowboarding in hamsedel then onto trysil for 4 or 5 days. It seems blindingly cheap when pricing it up so was wondering is the skiing worth it? Off piste, trees and powder are our thing followed by apres drinks then dinner. Trail maps look good and looks plenty enough for 4 or 5 days. Read a couple of posts but needed more info tbh. Cheers

We (family of 4) did Hafjell for 7 days this "season", starting between christmas and new year. Snow was a bit patchy (early in the season), and it iced up quite a bit late in the afternoon. Resort/facilities were great, Norway (and Olso) were lovely. Quite a "chilled" way to get to the resort - flew to Oslo, direct train up to Lillihammer, then a 20 minute bus journey, all without a hitch. Eating/drinking wasn't too expensive, if you're used to major city prices. Weather was cold (minus 19 was the coldest) .. but it didn't feel /that/ cold. What I would say is that without /lots/ of snow, it's not quite as spectacular as skiing at altitude (no mountains, basically), but we had a great time and would recommend it. Don't think we'll go back again next year, but that's only because there are so many places in the world to see Cool . Oh, and we also did 2 nights in Oslo, and my daughter (19) loved the city, and wanted to move there. Then she saw property prices, and decided she'll move when she's a millionaire Toofy Grin

@Gainz,
Good shout. I love Norway and snowboard, and have done a fair bit there.
I'd say three days plenty for Hemsedal.
I'd also consider Bergen for Myrkdalen (most snow) and Voss...

Based on 'Off piste, trees and powder' I would recommend -

Stranda, Narvik, Myrkdalen and Gausta.

You'll get 2 out of 3 at all of those.

Tree skiing can be short shots.

Had a few days in Trysil a few decades back, it had the feeling of "a local hill for local people". Certainly didn't compare to the main resorts in the Alps. I would only return if I just happened to be nearby. Can't comment on their other resorts.

The second statement is correct but not many can.

The first is certainly not correct now. Lots of international visitors from the languages and accents we’ve heard, and a lot from Oslo (given its 2 1/2 hour drive I would expect them not to be classified as local). Also a lot of workers (especially instructors) from Sweden.

Also they should have a new gondola by 25/26 season. A rarity for a Scandinavian resort.

Keen skiing friends of ours do an annual Norway trip.
They love the different vibe.
Night skiing in most places I believe (can be cold!)
Dog sledding outings.
Opportunity to try cross country...they are very good skiers and found this a challenge that they really enjoyed.
Fantastic scenery.
Implausible good looking people...the time I went I felt very sub-average in that regard! (No comments needed from those who know me!!)

The food and drink is London type prices, not a bargain, but why should it be?

On the subject of food and drink prices (apologies for thread drift) I find it odd that we, UK skiers, generally expect them to be cheaper abroad.
"proper" countries, with a high standard of living etc like most of Scandinavia, Switzerland etc...why should they be cheap?
If it cost roughly what it costs here...surely that is fair enough?

@rungsp, "high" prices but the current exchange rate to the Kroner is petty good historically

Just back from Hemsedal last couple of weeks. Found it good fun, esp for kids. Not overtly expensive other than booze. Nice people, good facilities. Good for beginner to intermediate skiers, not massive resorts and moundains rather than mountains. Kids loved it, i had fun on the piste for 5 days but would be bored quite quickly, if loads of snow more off piste opps open up. Very different experience, would love to go in more winter conditions and do x country, sledding etc

Absolutely not like that now. Probably worth a trip for you to see the change. Big link should be opening for next season also connecting 2 different areas. Lots of fun to be had.

Does not compare to the alps or any big resorts but then it does not need to.

 You know it makes sense.

Agree, we ventured to Trysil in Jan 22 as our initial French trip was cancelled due to Covid. We were pleasantly surprised albeit our view was perhaps skewed by the fact that we were absolutely gagging to go skiing. The main Raddsson Blu hotel was excellent and although the ski area is in no way as extensive as the alps the mix of slopes is excellent. If you are the sort of person who can't bear to ski the same run twice in a few days you might get disappointed. If you are happy skiing laps on a collection of fantastic runs you'll love it - albeit you'll find the coloured grades to be slightly soft, the reds are blues and the blacks are reds. We found it no more expensive than France.

Thanks everyone that's excellent. A great view of Norway and it's looking good so far. We'll decide in the next few weeks I guess while I research some more.

I went this season on our "Lads Off-Piste Trip".

We went because one of said Lads is Norwegian (from Bergen) and recently bought at apartment in Myrkdalen which is only a couple of hours from his gaff.

At first I met this suggestion with some disbelief; Aren't all the resorts tiny? Isn’t beer ruinously expensive? Isn’t it really bloody cold? Aren’t beards compulsory? As it turned out, the answer to all these points is "Yes".

But: flights are slightly cheaper than the ones to Geneva, a weeks lift pass is £150, food is cheaper than the alps and you can just about ski everything you can see. We spent a lot of time off piste and although we were gong to go to Voss to break the 9 ski days up a bit, we ended up venturing out of Myrkdalen only when we went touring with a guide as the Myrkdalen area had much better snow at the time we were there.

I'd definately go back.
