Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Easy Jet Ski carriage rules

Hi haveing just acquired my own skis and never having taken them on a flight, does anyone know the rules on how many bags you can take as sports equipment?

I have booked standard sports equipment for myself (20 kg), am I limited to one item or can I take both skis and boots in 2 seperate bags, original plan was to put my boots in my normal suitcase as usual but it would be great to take them as sports equipment in order to make more space in the suitcase
Cheers in advance

It’s a while since I’ve flown with easyJet for a ski holiday so no recent experience but for a booking for this weekend it says:
1 x Skis & boots under My Itinerary in the App
1 x Skis and/or boots under View Booking in the App
2 x Sports Equipment on booking email
I would interpret this as meaning I can take a ski bag and a boot bag - wish me luck!

I can imagine me having only 1x sports equipment on my booking for Saturday that it means I can only take one item of sports luggage, it’s wishful thinking from me I think that it would allow for me to spilt skis an boots across 2 bags without them wanting extra.
Im driving to the airport myself so could risk it but I would really want to avoid the sudden frantic faff of having to jettison half of my extra bits I’d crammed into the suitcase in order to fit my boots and its bag into there and get it under wieght Laughing
Guidelines are a bit vague on the website I wish they’d make it a bit more clearer

@Robzill, From 10 years ago, so may have changed

"Just got a reply from Easyjet customer services:

Customer travelling with skis, ski boots and ski poles will pay the standard sport equipment charge. Skis and boots can be packed in two different bags and will still be considered as one item and charged as one item as a "package deal"........"

https://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=116393

Perhaps you should contact Customer Services just to confirm?

You have Ski's as a sports equipment which should be a total of 20kg and
yes, you are allowed two items the skis and the boots not exceeding the
20kg.

Did you book it as "skis and / or boots" or "other small sports equipment"?

For the former from the app: "If bringing both skis and boots you can pack these as separate items"

But note that your combined weight for these items is still just 20kg.

If you've booked it as "other small sports equipment" or snowboard, you'll not usually be able to split your allowance across two bags.

Buy a long roller bag such as the Dakine High Roller. You can pack it all in there and only pay for one bag if you pack light. You have 20kg for sports equipment and currently that's all they care about. If you need a little more room then you can go cabin bag (which comes with a fringe bonus*) which is a bit cheaper than hold last time I flew, or 15kg or I think 23kg hold?

*fringe bonus - buy a cabin bag and you get speedy boarding which means you get on the bus first... lol. Not much use, but what it also comes with which can be helpful and that's speedy bag drop. When it's rammed at GVA that is a blessing!

Yeah it’s 15 kg now for a hold bag for 30 odd ridiculous really when it used to be 22kg for about 15 if I remember properly couldn’t belive it when I saw they’d started charging 30 quid just for a cabin bag too all adds up quick. Seriously considering driving next time

As a related aside - I was looking at Easyjet flights the other day and costing up whether to take skis or not - I was surprised it worked out cheaper to pay for sports equipment than a cabin bag or hold bag. So If I do go with that flight, I'll stuff everything in the sports equipment bag and just take a under seat bag on the flight (which doesnt cost enything).

@AliAfro, that would maybe be a good idea for me in the future to be fair. If I got a bigger ski back I could just squeeze everyting in, it turns out though you can split the 20 kg across more than one bag it would be plenty of room

I asked then if it was permissable to take 1 sports bag and put all stuff in the one. The response was no.... now whether you get away with it.... you may do but I didn't want to risk without something in writing but I am a very risk adverse person!

@nickyJ - wow what a stupid rule - i definitely want to pad the skis with clothes etc.

Contrast to British Airways where sporting goods are treated as hold bags - ie you get 23kg hold luggage allowance and it doesn't matter whether thats traditional luggage or a ski bag. You don't have to click a box saying you're bringing sports equipment - strictly speaking, somewhere in the small print they recommend that you let them know you will be bringing sports equipment (but I never have and it has never been a prob).

Also - devious thought - surely sports equipment includes ski jacke, ski pants, ski socks, thermals etc

I always put other things in my bag. I usually take a snowboard bag for my skis and boots along with poles, helmet, goggles, gloves, thermals and clothes. Last trip a few weeks ago the bag was 24kg on the way back and the check in person at Geneva didn’t even blink. Pot luck I know but never once been questioned if it’s close to or below the 20kg limit as to what’s inside.

You got lucky, if you use the automated bag check in service it’ll ask for a card payment there and then if it’s over.

I took it to the desk instead of the automated scales (in Speedy Boarding) to avoid just that risk.

You were very lucky then as with the machines at Geneva now, you're less likely to get your bag checked in by a person who may exercise discretion.

On my most recent flight back last Friday, I spoke to a young lad whose snowboard bag was 5kg over and had to pay £60 in excess fees.

Meanwhile, my "surfboard" bag was packed to its 32kg limit with my snowboard, boots, clothes, 6 cans of wheat beer and a load of other stuff for the £50 I paid at the time of booking. Everything except my helmet basically.

I chose the "large sports equipment" option on the screen (which isn't actually an option when booking online / via app, rather than "surfboard" option my booking therefore showed) mainly because if it all went wrong, I fancied my chances of claiming on insurance more if I'd checked it as anything else.

For me, that's the big thing to always consider in these situations: if something goes wrong, what's the worst case scenario and what's your own risk aversion level. Not what someone else says they got away with once.

On that note I thought I could game it with the usual foot on the luggage lifting it a bit, doesn’t work on them Laughing

The other problem with that is you have to take the bag to the oversized luggage counter and if there is a discrepancy between the weight on the label and the scales there, you risk getting pulled up on it.

Oh and going back to my previous reply, I have been asked what was in my "surfboard" bag on the way out of Birmingham, but was lucky that the staff were struggling to cope with the number of passengers for two early morning flights and was hurried along by their colleague.
