Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Bonneval sur Arc at Easter 2026

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Back from this year’s Easter trip and already looking to next year. Thinking of trying a new, smaller resort and not somewhere I’ve been and always wanted to try Bonneval.

I’ve found a really nice apartment near the lift but my main concern is that in holiday weeks the one four seater chair out of the resort will get overwhelmed and end up stuck in queues getting around the (small) resort. Does anyone have any real world experience of being in the resort during holiday weeks? Or am I better looking at a busier resort but one with a less antiquated lift system? La Plagne this year had its busy spots but at no point all week did we need to queue for more than 5 to 10 minutes.

Yes the lift up from Bonneval is pretty old and slow….but having skied there a number of times during Xmas/New Year and February half terms we’ve never had anymore than about 10 people in front of us queuing at the lift, and have never queued at all on any of the other lifts higher up.

@bigtuboflard, I've not the experience to offer in regard to peak times, but can give overview.

Like you, I'd often considered going there but group demand would always sway it to somewhere bigger Very Happy

Haven't stayed, yet. But visiting from Val Cenis it's very convenient with a car easiest for us. It's brilliant though to ski somewhere a little different and out of the way.

I sense that even busy times it doesn't attract so many that can be bothered to take the journey, easy packages available etc to big destinations.

Absolutely worth considering, so peaceful and with grand scale at valley's end its quite a contrast to places like LP. It's really so chilled up there.

I've a master plan to join along the dots, the larger places I've skied with the smaller one's such as this in my ski experience (dragging family along too) which has so far payed out with such difference in places to visit and ski. Not found a bad one yet. I do rationalise it by feeling its only one week and not really far from anywhere else if it turned out against anticipation. Especially if driving yourself.

I'd encourage you to take a little risk, get stuck into the exploration psychology to find out. I dont think you'd regret it. You can easily take a day out in Val Cenis to add a good day's look around there too, ( in tbe name of further research Madeye-Smiley ) either car or ski bus to connect.

There's good food up there too, and cake .... did I mention cake Very Happy

Thanks both @andmelffion and @ski3, I think it’s a risk I’m probably prepared to take. I do like the different pace of smaller resorts, in fact some of my favourite places only have a handful of lifts which makes you more creative in the use of what you’ve got.

And one of the key factors which the group want is genuine ski to door so we can pick up group members throughout the morning as not everyone wants to be on the first chair (there’s a teenager in the group for this is essential!). And as you say, Val Cenis is just down the road if we want some variety.

It's quite an amusing juxtaposition with the lift more or less on the "highstreet" as it were, like a little portal to another world Very Happy

Seems the general use for it is getting up away onto mountain initially, whereupon most skiers stay up around there, not then producing significant traffic for that first lift generally throughout the day.
There's ski schools using both main return, plus a longer gentle meander contour followed route coming back there, but not substantial continuous traffic.

The old village, of which many publicity images are, is also intriguing with properties having ad hoc different entry height provision as the streets fill up so much with snowfall. You can be walking around at something like 1sr floor height in the village.
Feels a little frontiers town atmosphere.

I have been to Maurienne multiple times, but never got to Bonneval.
From what I've heard it is quite the magical destination. The skiing area is not large, but VERY high quality, especially for offpiste.

It feels nicely remote at that end of the valley.

I guess that'd be different in summer with the Col d Isere open after snow clearing. In winter it's only Steve in his helicopter coming over from "The view from" thread Very Happy Laughing to disturb the peace.

So chilled there.
