Can any of the regular flyers in + out of GVA on easyJet offer any advice or tips on the following please :
- is there a worthwhile frequent flyer programme on eJ?
- do any car hire outfits offer a loyalty scheme that offers discounts but, more importantly, easy key pick-up + handover?
Thanks

We use GVA maybe 10 times a year. Never been tempted to join easyJet plus. Speedy boarding also seems a waste of money. Nowadays you have a reserved seat on EJ - it doesn’t matter whether you’re first to board or last.
No experience with hire cars, we always get the train.

@franga, Hertz do a gold club, Avis do a preferred program - I'm sure they will all do something similar.
I tend to use argus car hire, they do % discounts depending on how many hires, up to 20% after 10 bookings https://www.arguscarhire.com/

Flight Club is great. Benefit is “free” flight changes. I don’t think they’re inviting anyone now. I think the criteria was 20 flights (returns?) a year.
We buy EJ Plus as it includes a 2nd larger luggage. We fly 20+ returns a year so it makes total sense.
I think all of the mainline rental cos have priority desks?

- EJ Flight Club is very useful if you need to make changes for free.
- EJ Plus is useful for us because we take max size overhead locker bags plus small rucksacks (no hold baggage) and can usually be at the train platform 30 minutes after landing - as above, we usually log at least 20 return flights a year, so the cost is far cheaper than paying for hold baggage (and we have the luxury of leaving skis/boots/helmets etc in resort with our daughter). However, having answered a few EJ surveys in the last 12 months, it felt like they would like to tier membership at some point.
- Having been delayed behind crashes on the Swiss motorways on many journeys in the past, we now let the train take the strain whenever possible …

Unless you're getting benefits of the luggage (i.e. Not taking a hold bag) then you may get more use out of paying for fast track security instead.

@franga, Avis (Swiss side) has installed an automatic key machine for registered members. As of a couple of weeks ago it wasn’t actually working though.
None of the Geneva operators have anything like the US model of just going straight to your car and driving off. All of them require a desk visit, but both Avis preferred and hertz number one club, at some level of status have the ability to sign the form, grab the keys and go. Unfortunately the delay is usually the people in front of you who are trying to decide if they want an upgrade/insurance/a different car…

EJ plus is definitely worth it if you travel regularly with what used to be the inclusive standard sized cabin bag.
However, the days of getting off first via an air bridge and walking straight to passport control is a thing of the past as we all get bussed to end of the new extension to the terminal and have a long hike up and back to the baggage area. It takes at least another 20 mins.

On the Swiss side, you always have to go to a rental desk to collect your keys. As mentioned, Hertz do a thing called Gold Club. It’s free to join and you get a second driver free; a dedicated priority desk; and in my experience, are upgraded if they can. You also get points for rentals.
Bear in mind you can’t usually add a second driver once you’ve driven the car away. So if the named driver is injured or ill etc. you may be in a bit of a pickle.
If you are checking prices, go through hertz.co.uk, not hertz.com as at present, the former includes CDW in the price, while the latter has it as a pricey opt-in for some reason.
I’d say +1 for the train. We increasingly get an advance SBB Saver Day Pass for our trips to Swiss resorts. We can get on the PostBus in the resort, then step off the train inside the GVA terminal: no hassle around filling-up; traffic; and worries about being charged retrospectively for other people’s scratches.

@LaForet, we used them in Munich, yesterday, as I walked to the Hertz desk my heart sank when I saw the long queue.
As I got the back of the queue and looked further along there was the gold check in desk, told family no, got to that one where we got served straight away. The daggers of looks we got from the other queue

Interesting - I can’t remember taking a bus at Geneva in the last 5 years! We get off first via an air bridge and walk straight to passport control.

 You know it makes sense.

We were bussed to and from the easyjet flight to Geneva a couple weeks ago. Even then it was a long walk to the passport control where there was only a short queue. In fact just as @Perty, described it. TBH I never bother with speedy boarding or paying for a bag in the overhead locker. When we came back from Geneva last week my wife, son and me shared a checked bag. It cost less and we didn't have the hassle of lugging bags around the airport. I do have one indulgance however, I buy a cup of tea on board.

The last three trips to GVA we've had to be bussed from the easyJet 'plane to the far end of the new terminal, then a walk all the way back to passport control. The second of these involved about +40 minutes because initially weren't many officers on the passport desks. All have been a weekday 08:10 departure from LGW.
The key thing is to be at the centre right door of the bus, which is usually opposite the entrance door. Then you're first off and into the terminal. It is annoying for anyone in the front seats that it brings no advantage to deplaning in these circumstances: you may be first on the bus but that doesn't necessarily help much.

Yeah pretty sure we got bussed to the terminal when I flew to GVA last year
@LaForet, I always find it funny that those in a rush to leave the plane end up first on the bus and last off

It may just be chance, but my past few arrivals into GVA either late morning/early afternoon on a Saturday have all involved a bus to the terminal.
All the departures, which have been evening weekdays, have had the luxury of the air bridge and no bus.
Perhaps Easyjet use remote stands on the busier weekend days?

I seem to have gained Easyjet Plus bag drop with the speedy boarding I have from booking extra cabin luggage for 5he EOSB, is this normal and worthwhile?

I have never managed to find a car hire price (at GVA or anywhere else) via Hertz, Avis, Europcar etc websites that is anywhere near as cheap as booking via brokers such as Autoeurope, Holiday Autos or Discovercars after searching for the best price on Travelsupermarket.com. You end up at one of the main car hire desks in the terminal anyway.
If the broker booking is with Enterprise/Europcar, they send you an email where you can check in ahead of your trip by entering your passport, driving licence and credit card details. Having done that, the key pick up at the hire desk is then very quick.
And, as a Quidco member, I get 4 or 5% cashback on Travelsupermarket purchases too.

@stevew, Yes, if you book a large cabin bag you automagically get speedy boarding and Easyjet plus bag drop. I don't think there is a way to book a large cabin bag without SB and EJ+. You can usually reduce the price by selecting a seat in the rear of the plane, rather than up front - perhaps saving £10-£20.

@Judwin, thanks, so used to clicking through skip seat selection didn't notice if there was a reduction for not upfront, will check next time.
