Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Keeping kids entertained up on the mountain at coffee/lunch stops

Yesterday I was asked to help a friend by skiing with her kids as hubby had gone back early to the UK.

As it was going to be a very social ski, meeting others for coffee and then a big end-of-season lunch I packed a couple of transceivers and a shovel; and what a success!

After showing them what to do they kept themselves entertained all throughout the coffee break, though to be honest the 7 year old was just content to play with the shovel, which he did most of the time whilst we all enjoyed the sunshine on the terrace at lunch.

The 11-year-old was pretty well glued to me all the time, and as her Mum told me she and hubby can't keep up with her, which I suppose does raise the issue of safety etc as per the other thread on collisions; hence I was skiing short turns down the edge of the piste getting her to be more in control at speed which she managed very well.

Arva training ground on the hill behind me Very Happy

The transceiver easter-egg hunt was a popular event on the Family Bash.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Yes, that's a brilliant entertainment idea - an extension on the "simply digging around with a shovel" which is always a winner.

Skiing with young kids (we had 4, the youngest was 29 last month) is a wonderful thing and a privilege. We made memories which will last a lifetime. They're all off making their own skiing memories these days and occasionally one says 'thanks' which is not necessary, but kind of nice. Madeye-Smiley

I took 20 kids on a trip to build 'igloos'. We had about half the group who were fully focussed on building an igloo and worked together really well. The other half of the group spent most of the time just shovelling snow from one place to another without any real purpose! They all loved it - and these are kids who live in the mountains and are in the snow a few times a week.

Whats to entertain?

You’re stopping to have lunch/coffee/hot chocolate, you do that then head off skiing again.

Totally agree with Ster, but if you're looking for something extra to keep them busy during those breaks, a quick scavenger hunt for snow creatures or even making snow forts can do the trick!

@ster, for me this is a good spring skiing late afternoon finish on the terrace with a beer and a way to keep the kids amused.

Not if you are stopping for coffee and then a big end of season lunch you don't!

If you live in the mountains and get to ski as much as you want, life is not all about skiing as many kms as possible.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

@Legend., you’re lucky then aren't you, more so than most who only ski a week a year.

@ster, I don’t. But the OP does and that is what he is doing (as he says in his post!)

And also, it's not a bit unusual that people quite like to entertain their kids (or other people's kids) who might not want to bash around the mountains all day, or who get bored when adults are eating and chatting, and looking for buried transceivers is terrific entertainment (not to mention quite useful). Quite often we get people asking about "things to do" for kids, and I reckon this one is a useful idea.

Agreed. Part of the fun a family can have. Or in this case someone else's kids, but it's all the same!

Personally, I think the trips are about having a great time in the snow, and my kids absolutely feel the same. Skiing is a massive part of that but it is not the be all and end all.
