Incredibly enjoyable first day on the slopes.
The eldest managed to get out yesterday for a few hours but due to waiting for a 5pm check in and generally being pooped, we all thought we’d save ourselves.
Snow quality was exceptional today. So much soft stuff, totally confidence building despite the at-times bad visibility. Did 20-odd miles of mainly cruiser blues, lapping Bergerie then heading to Bellecote for a few runs before heading over to Montalbert - forgot how lovely those flay tree runs are, even on a snowboard.
Think we may have the most perfect week snow-wise. The kids are in love with La Plagne… “best resort ever!” One of them said.
Daughter’s reynards spoilt her day - it felt very, very cold at times - but she sat and chilled in the apartment for the last two hours of the ski day while we stayed local.
Beers are stupid expensive, deffo gone have to reign in the apres.
Even did a bit of evening sledging in the runs in Soleil, think we may have pushed our luck once we saw piste badgers heading our way.
All in all, a great first day. Not sure where we’ll go tomorrow, as there’s more snow forecast, so probably stay low where visibility/contrast is a bit better

@sugarmoma666,
Worth trying these? Probably Decathlon in other Plagne Villages but not sure.
Decathlon Mountain Plagne 1800
Arrêt de Bus Plagne 1800 haut 221 RD Résidence Lauze Plagne 1800
73210 La Plagne

Or make it an adventure with a cheaper lunch? A jaunt to Bourg S-M up and down the funicular maybe?
Or Plan Peisey via the cute 'cage' lift just below the Vanoise Express?

I reckon it's a bit more than that. It was still snowing till around 0930 and is still snowing above Champagny.

Has anyone skied down to Champagny recently? Getting out to resort on Saturday. Although not everyone will want to ski that low, if it is passable I would be keen.
Also keen to get a bit of off piste, but again not the whole family will want to go where I would. If there is anyone out that week that is going to be off the beaten track and wouldn't mind an extra person hanging on. That would be marvellous! (Family commitments not withstanding) Not going to be going far on my own for obvious reasons.

Black down to champagny has been closed 11 of the 12 days I’ve been skiing in La plagne this season so imagine it’s probably shut for the season now barring unusual amounts of snow for the time of year. Think the Mont de la guerre red has also only been open once.
Thanks also for your kind words and enjoy your holiday!

@Thick As, I skied down to Champagny a couple of weeks ago. Snow was pretty good then but visibility poor. I inadvertently took the black section and, whilst not especially scary, was a long way off my favourite run of the week.
I’m out on Thursday, so first day skiing Friday , then all the following week. I’m not planning to do off piste but happy to meet up to ski on piste and flexible as to where and what grade. Usually avoid black pistes in poor visibility, when it’s difficult to see the piste markers and/or moguls coming up.
Enjoy your trip

@bobalexander1983, oh that’s awful hews, Bob. When I asked how your week in La Plagne had gone you sounded so positive about it all. Then this….never know what’s just around the next corner
My sympathies to family, you and other friends. I hope in time the catch up and ski together you enjoyed might give some comfort.

The blackrun down to Champagny closed (for the season) around 8-12 days ago, in mid-March.
It was a white spaghetti strip of slush, mud, and rocks in the final days.
No snow left below ~1500m on that side of the valley.

@Thick As, been to Champagny today - excellent conditions. Very quiet over there TBH. The off piste between runs we great, ever-so slight crust but great in a snowboard. Most is tracked out close to the piste but there’s a still a lot of fresh stuff in the areas that demand avi skills.

Carnage today in La Plagne.
Black ice on trails.
Bodies everywhere.
More helichoppers in the air than Vietnam.
A boarder flew off a cliff.
Reports of hundreds of folk sick with food poisoning or viruses in 1800.
It's carnage out there.

The 1800 outbreak is at UCPA. With one meal they gave food poisoning to over a hundred teens. At one stage they had 3 docs and 20 firefighters performing first aid. So it is contained.

@Whitegold, absolute b*llocks
Very serene, lots of people getting on, no bloodwagons
Apart from the old fudger who was frothing at the mouth like he had rabies because I happened to pass within about three metres of him, it’s been great in resort .

@bobalexander1983, very sad, condolences to friends and family. Always sad to hear of someone passing doing something they loved.
——-
It was warm the past two days, some serious slush low down but I think there’s something nice about carving through porridge and knowing you will always hold an edge (even if it feels slow AF)
Sat at the bar near Vanoise Express, drinking a beer, basking in the rays. Probably the best Spring conditions I’ve ever experienced.
Final day tomorrow; up the glacier, Becoin blacks and as many reds as I can muster from my old knees. Will be sad to leave

Hello, we are leaving for La plagne tomorrow. 1st day ski Monday.
Do you currently need snow boots for walking round 1800? Is it very cold up top but T-shirt weather at bottom?

@Snowysarah, a lot of people are wearing trainers walking around resort. Everyone's disposition is different but I haven't felt cold yesterday or today when up high. If the forecast remains as it stands, in these coming few days I'll continue to not need the thermal bottoms or mid-layer fleece that I brought. Safe travels.

You just need sturdy shoes with decent grip, e.g. walking boots. (There again, I don't believe you ever need snow boots and have never owned a pair).

Returned home and now thinking about the next ski trip.... wife has already said that we can break the 'no return to a resort' rule, La Plagne seems to have won everyone over.
Will do a full TR this week but safe to say, it's pretty much a glowing reference for Plagne Soleil and the wider Paradiski
Now to deal with the sunburn from the last three days, not enough aftersun in the world to deal with peeling faces and cracked lips

@Specialman, a glowing endorsement indeed, look forward to your trip report.
I noticed today a weather report pasted against the window at tourist information in Plagne Centre, in my rusty French I gleaned that temperatures this week are equivalent to mid-June norms.

@HerecomesCarol, thurs and Friday in particular were very warm, 7-8 degrees according to the weather apps, and that was just the start of it; base layer, mid layer and a jacket and I was melting by the time it got to 1pm. Can’t imagine what it’ll be like this week if it’s even hotter.
I suppose Spring always comes with the threat of blazing sun and high temperatures. I was impressed about the quality of the snow above 2000m and even down to La Roche it was really nice to ride, if a bit slushy. But all the snow had gone from surrounding grass when we descended on Saturday to leave, stark contrast to arrival day in 28th when it was high snowbanks

You were lucky to be here last week Specialman. Slush abound today, even mid/late morning.
And I do know that this is the risk I take with choosing to ski this week. Despite the slush and heat (for a moment today felt like I was a “chicken in a bag” being roasted on a piste), I would still rather be in the mountains than elsewhere.

For anyone who doesn't know La Plagne so well and you're looking for a cost-effective lunch option, I recommend the bakery below SPAR in plane Centre..... great sandwiches for €5-6 and pizzas for €4.50, plus a selection of very, very nice cakes and pastries. We managed to buy several ham & cheese baguettes, a wonderful quiche (which was warmed up at the bakery), plus some sweet stuff, and then a few cans of beer and some bottles of pop from SPAR upstairs, for €40, enough for 6 of us to be sorted. We sat on the snowfront and watched the world go by in the sun.
Probably the best lunch we had all week TBH, relaxed and easy on the wallet
