Please excuse me - I have a few topics I still need to thank people for but just in a rush atm! Does anyone know the best ski map app or tracking app to use in Les Menuires/3 Valleys pse?
Also can someone kindly recommend a decent travel sim company to go with? I'm basically a technophobe but know these things help so I don't get lost or rack up lots of roaming charges with a UK phone in France! Will I need to turn on my wi-fi whilst I'm on the mountain - so that it loses battery quickly? What is the reception like in the whole area either Les Men or 3 Valleys?
Ideally I'd like to track the few runs I manage to do until I pick the kids up at 2pm without getting lost! As never been to Les Men before so might easily get lost?
Also I'd like to know whether I can turn my phone off to help preserve a bit of battery left for taking photos but are the tracking apps very hungry? I only have an iPhone SE 3rd gen, so it hasn't got a big battery but it does accept dual sim.
A recommendation for a good virtual travel sim card would be handy - I used Maya mobile years ago in Singapore but don't know for France. I don't want to use a physical travel sim as I lost all my What's App history doing that last year! Or do you think a travel sim is necessary if the phone can still track when it's turned off - and then would it just show me all the runs info when I connected to wi-fi at a restaurant or back in the resort? I'd still need to use it on the mountain for maps though?
Sorry it's not a very eloquent message but I'm in a rush to pack. Many thanks for any one who reads and helps.

I've used both Ski Tracks and Strava. Ski Tracks cost is minimal while Strava is free. I prefer Ski Tracks.
For battery, yes, they do consume more, normally I can get a whole day of tracking in. Although I guess an iPhone SE has a smaller battery than your average iPhone. It also depends on how you store your phone, the cold is a battery killer so keep the phone inside the jacket, close to your body to preserve battery life. It's always a good idea to carry an external battery to top up the phone when you have lunch/drinks breaks.
You will need mobile signal/data on the mountain for GPS to work on your phone as most phones do not have true GPS and relies on mobile data for a chunk of calculations.
First check that your current mobile provider does have free EU roaming, quite a few does.
There's a recent discussion about eSim here, https://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=163273

Look at Slopes app for tracking and logging of ski runs. Gives lots of daily, trip and seasonal data. Incorporates piste map as well as being able to see the whereabouts of approved “friends” using Slopes on the map. We use it to track our kids when they are on the mountain. There is a free version that has lots of features, premium as well as a family premium subscription for upto 6 members. Seems less demanding on battery life than ski tracks.

Ah thanks guys - I’ll try those apps. I’ve tried using the 3 Valleys tracker whilst here in Les Ménuires but it annoyingly keeps cutting out and says I’ve only done 4 runs!
Yes I’m having to carry around a power bank charger.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I’m a SkiTracks user and have been using it for years. Yes it cuts down battery life but I’ve always had it running the whole day and had battery left at the end of the ski day.
I really like it and can’t remember it ever not tracking something. It auto recognises the resort you’re at, no matter how local and obscure. Gives a nice map of where you’ve been and a load of other info.
For SIM cards: e-sim if your phone is compatible. Dead easy to use and mostly dirt cheap for data only.

I use Strava. If your phone is powered OFF then obviously it can't track anything, but it can be locked and in your pocket and it will track. You don't need wifi on the mountain. I used Saily for mobile data on a recent trip to France, but can't help with a package that includes calls and texts as they were included in the "roaming" section on my UK package (i'd blasted through my data in the UK and it was WAY cheaper to add an eSim for France than to buy extra data)

Your lift pass may be capable of being used as a backup tracker, using Skiline.
