Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I don't know anything about skiing, and my 4-year-old is really getting into it. We will need to buy Skis and Boots for her next season, what do we need to look for and how do we choose?

Our kids liked the Roces adjustable boots at that age. You can adjust them by 2-3 sizes, and they have a very soft kids-friendly flex. I think my son used them all the way up to ESF 3*. Then the ubiquitous Lange RSJ range.

Skis at that age we just bought secondhand or whatever was on sale on Ekosport for <£100. Up until 115cm they are all very similar, just with different colour schemes. At 115 there start (or at least, this was true 10 yrs ago) to be proper wood cored kids "race" skis available.

Yeah, my two used the same adjustable ski boots for years. I got the second hand, then moved the boots along to someone else. Stickers are really useful on each boot for training, Squash the Spider, Squish the Snail - had a spider sticker on the left boot, snail on the right...

Kid size skis, just rent stuff.

Another vote for Roces adjustable boots.

Decathlon adjustable poles. Decathlon kids skis or Glisshop.

I usually buy their gear in summer, when you can get a discount on last year's model.

Had the decathlon Pumzi adjustable boots, did 3 seasons, also very happy.
I’ve got some amazing boots on eBay this season for the kids — barely worn Fischer for £40 and girls’ Lange brand new for £11. If you bide your time and happy to take a chance it works.
We always rent skis as kids’ are reasonably priced.

I take my kids to a boot fitter in resort and he fits them - we seem to get a lot of atomic boots, never offered adjustable, neither has ever complained about their boots. The boots go to the next kid down and then to friends.

Is there a reason to buy rather than rent?

We did buy when our lad was 4 because we had to holidays booked plus a few days planned from the house in Italy over Christmas so it made sense.

@homers double, if you have two kids and can get multiples seasons wear out of one pair it makes sense.

As they grow so fast, is it not better to rent when they are this small?

 snowHeads are a friendly bunch.

The adjustable boots did my kids 2 yrs each. x 2 kids. x # trips each year. Add in some resale value, and for anyone doing 2+trips/yr, the question about rent vs buy gets inverted pretty quickly.
